For future reference, when you're trying to line up a tube or shaft like that, if you have just a small amount of run out, you can actually bend it pretty easily with heat by just applying heat to one side and the side you put heat to will become shorter once it has cooled down. This is a surprisingly powerful effect so employ it sparingly also, when using a dial indicator, try to make sure that your dial indicator is perpendicular to the shaft as much as possible because you get what is called a cosine error when it is not. You may be surprised to find how many things that are actually quite high precision are straightened or adjusted after they are welded by using heat in just the right spot to straighten the part. Even massive structures like you would find in a shipyard are adjusted after they are welded using a technique called flame straightening.

Minor detail...The error is not proportional to the cosine. It is proportional to the reciprocal. That is. 1 / cosine. (alternately called the secant) With 1 / cosine, the error increases with increasing non perpendicularity. If it were proportional to the cosine, the error would decrease

@gregparrott10 ай бұрын
@@zukgod I'm unsure how to interpret your comment, but it certainly was not intended to make anyone feel 'like a moron'. I'm guessing Two items may have been confusing: #1) The word reciprocal just means the number, variable or function (in this case the 'cosine' function) is the bottom term in a fraction. (e.g. a hundredth can be represented as the reciprocal of a hundred ( e.g. 1/100) #2) The 'Cosine' function In math, a 'function' is a fancy way of saying a relation is established between a value (usually, just one) that enables you to calculate another value. I could say you give me $10 and I'll give you $20. That 'function' can be represented as 'Y = 2 * X, where 'X' was the known $10 and 'Y' is the result, $20. A branch of math (trigonometry) that describes relations with triangles, which also be greatly extended to model waves (sound waves, ocean waves, explosions, light waves, economic cycles, etc.). If we stick with triangles, consider placing a 10 foot ladder against a wall. If it's vertical, you achieve maximum height with no horizontal offset to aid in its stability. As you offset the ladder's base away from the wall, you gain stability, but lose height. Using trig. 'functions', if you know any two values (e.g. ladder length and angle, ladder length and height, ladder length and offset, offset and height, etc.) you can calculate the corresponding unknown term. The three most common trig. terms are 'since', 'cosine', and 'tangent'. Cosine: Given the ladder's length and the angle between it and a horizontal line, you can calculate its offset (the function itself assumes a length of '1', then multiply by length) Sine: Given the ladder's length and the angle between it and a horizontal line, you can calculate its height (the function itself assumes a length of '1', then multiply by length) Tangent: Is the ratio of sine/cosine. Let's return to the comment about measuring runout. it will be most accurate when the gage is measuring at an angle that is perpendicular to the spin axis of the spindle they're measuring. If it's perpendicular, the measurement is more accurate than if the indicator is skewed at some angle, say a whopping 30 degrees. If I measured, say, a whopping 0.100 inches when it was perpendicular, I can tell you the FALSE runout reading you'd get because of the misalignment. It would NOT be cosine(30). It would be 1 / cosine(30). In this case, the angle would be between a line that's perpendicular to the spin axis and the angle that the indicator is aligned to. In this case, the erroneous reading would be 0.100 * (1 / cosine (30 degrees)). To 3 degrees of precision, the cosine of 30 degrees is 0.866. So, the FALSE reading you'd get is 0.100 * (1/0.866), or 0.115 inches. That's a 15% error. Splitting hairs here, this assumes we're looking at an error in 2 dimensions, one where both the perpendicular and the indicator's axis intersect the spin axis. It would get more complex if the indicator's axis did not intersect the spin axis. But that error too could be modeled/calculated using trig. I hope that helps.

When it cracks and breaks loose start weld with gap. Otherwise the weld cracks as it cools internally pulling out the crack to the outside. Man I love watching Katelynn behind the wheel. There's something just so cool about a person so young being so good at something so unexpected.

You make me feel better. I did the same bad idea on my homemade doubler. Then normalized quenched and tempered with total runout half of yours.

Can you guys invite Hunter Goodrich to the off road games next year? He's fun to watch with his stub truck, you'd have to tell him to go easy though because his truck is a little top heavy. Maybe he can fix it up so it does better off road.

17:45 the concern on Jamie's face as you know she wants to have Matt take a break but figures just let it roll as a safer bet: seen that look on my grandma's face with grandpa -- usually followed by, "go help your grandpa"

Katelyn makes every MORR video better (even the ones she isn't in) because she smiles and laughs so much! She's like a waking, talking, sometimes-clad-in-pink little ball of sunshine.

Thank you for this video. It was great seeing Ed again and a very nice surprise to see Lizzie along with Holly. Lizzie I sincerely hope your pregnancy all goes without any problems. Very nice that you stopped in for a visit.

Why would you say Lizzy is pregnant? If she is not, that's quite insulting.

Hey Matt I watched you build this corvair from day one. Even if it has a design flaw, it's amazing what you've done with it. You've inspired me to keep my ZJ and keep rebuilding it until it's brand new again. I know it's not an XJ but I love it. Anyway thanks for all the great videos. Hope to meet you someday.
