Excuses or Educating? For many a year I used a 10k lbs tow strap for everything watching videos like Matt's I learned that's a no-no. Now I have a tow strap for easy no kinetic energy needed pulls/tows because it's lighters and quicker but I pull out the proper stuff when needed. I have a recovery strap, bought it before recovery ropes were a thing and I have a recovery rope, and a winch. Even if you do things right, things can go wrong. I once had a F350 recovery hook come flying at me once pulling him out of a snow bank... whomever installed it needs to be shot.. 6 friggin spot welds to hold it on. Luckily I had plenty of rope and run way I move back and to the side so it could drop without hitting my truck.

The key to pulling from mud is not working against inertia. Inertia is the resistance of the change of motion-- so a heavy truck already has a lot of inertia anyway, plus the suction of the mud-- which neither one of those likes to accelerate quickly. So the be secret is pulling slowly, which gives the mud time to release. The mud almost acts like a "non-Newtonian" fluid. Meaning the faster that you try to pull against it, the more it acts like solid ground; but the slower you pull against it, the more it will flow and act like water.

Matt. Great video as always... At 17:17 you told us that if the suction makes the vehicle you're trying to extract feel like it's chained to a tree, then a kinetic rope is NOT the solution. However... earlier you fed us a "golden nugget" of insight - that kinetic ropes keep pulling if you stop moving forward. That stored tension keeps working. So really, if all one had was a KR, and no winch, one could use that insight to safe advantage... just put some decent tension on it and wait. As you said, over time, it could break the suction.

Back before there were purpose built kinetic ropes we used timed-out bungee jumping cords. On the beach in South Padre Island, Texas there were plenty to find. They were obviously much stretchier than a recovery rope. The technique was to attach both ends, and stretch the rope till you start to bury the recovery vehicle. The reason a vehicle sunk in mud down to the frame rails has such a hard time moving, is because the first motion that the vehicle has to make (when pulled from the front, let's say) is lifting the entire vehicle from its sunk position to a natural height above the axles and tires. Any forward pull has to also lift the entire vehicle up many inches from it's stuck position. An equivalent pull would be to try to tow a heavy truck up a 75° or steeper slope by pulling straight into the hill rather than from up the hill. Would nearly be easier for a winch to lift the weight of the stuck vehicle vertically into the sky, than to pull that stuck vehicle laterally across the ground. The first few inches of movement is clearly requiring huge amount of force. Yanking that rope forward might provide initial force, but if not enough, and not sustained, you won't get the sunk vehicle out. Plus you could break off whatever you're attached to.

Question. What happened to Trevor Haven’t seen him in awhile
@JohnFL2 жыл бұрын
Trevor is no longer part of the MORR crew, he got a job closer to home climbing communications towers (with the proper fall protection gear, of course). We miss him on MORR though.

A 2WD truck with an open rear? Damn That thing could get stuck in wet grass. The fact he lifted it seems crazy, must be a mall crawler normally. Kudos for actually trying to off road it I guess, but he needs a better starting platform.

Of course, the winch quits working when you need it! Two-wheel drive not on the pavement but playing in the sand needs winched out! Good job Jefe and blur faces!

Hey Daniel, I messaged Trevor and he was kind enough to get back with me. He said he's not part of the MORR crew any longer, as he got a job closer to home climbing communications towers (with the proper fall protection gear, of course). We miss him here though!

ive taken my small city car many places of road, worst place ive driven was a logging trail on edge of a very steep drop off. sure was a very tricky u turn at a Y as the road just ended and too slippy just for parking brake to hold so had to leave it in gear and engine off to clear logs of road. so far my small car been to many more places off road place than most the 4x4's you see in the city's. from uk here. more fun and challenging taking a car where it was not designed for, many times in 3 wheels but an achievement get in and out without damage, so far done well no damage and surprising where you can get in a small city car
