The guy got impressively far out there in a 2 wheel drive truck and I'm betting if the truck had not broken he probably would have made it back out.

truck either needed more power because of all the extra weight, or 4wd for those roads. Poor little truck, i feel him tho, trying to get out there and explore. he should just stick to all the safer stuff till he can get a 4wd truck.

I work fire lookouts each summer. No cell service for large portions of the forest. I bring my starlink with me (rv version subscription) and can use WiFi calling from my phone with it. Most of the time it’s stowed away, but sometimes I’ll drive with it connected from the bed of the pickup and an inverter. It’d be a cheap safety feature to have on these recoveries (cell phones working, internet and satellite imagery, accept customer payments, etc.). Also, it’s a great backup for the house when the internet goes down and works great for getting info while camping for prolonged periods of time.

Awesome system! That is smart! Two providers are working on emergency bare cell service from space world-wide. The plan is to provide it for free / included. It will save lives! We have our starlink permanently mounted on the rv roof. I got the smaller one, cut it down and put into a flat mounting arrangement, it's been there for a little over a year now. We spend a lot of time out of cell coverage with that rig, and when parked we always have good phone using wifi calling on the starlink.

At 25:45 - Tom: "Go left and ride out the way we came in?". Mat: "Yeah. We know that way and there's a burro if we get hungry". Earlier when spotting the burro on the way in - Mat: "What do you call a baby burro?" .... "A burrito". Haha. I love Mat's dry and self-depreciating sense of humour, he'd fit right in here in Australia, especially out bush.

The wrecker is just plain awesome. It's not something converted from a road vehicle to an off-road one it is purpose built for the type recoveries that Matt is called upon to do. Matt should be so proud to say I (and crew) built that. I remember the build from the time the frame was just chalk marks on the floor. Not that this recovery was any challenge for it I have seen it at it's best where nothing else could of got the job done but it just makes me smile everytime I see it in action knowing that it is definitely one of a kind and there will never be another just like it. Matt usually has a smile on his face every time he is behind the wheel and rightfully so. Don't get me wrong I love the Morrvair also, it's one mean machine too. I started watching when all he had to work with was the almost stock XJ and a Bubba brand tow rope and no winch, just yanked everything out. Things have changed over the years and Matt has become very successful and rightfully so from all his hard work, great family and awesome crew. I forgot to include generosity also. Thanks for the ride.

Per Kevin and Brittany, blue on OnX means that path is verified/validated recently. I think green just means it hasn't been verified within a year, or 6 months. Blue might mean someone with OnX has driven that road and verified that it is still drivable. OnX is community-driven, so everyone together helps rate the trails, provide pictures, and verify trails.

Quite a testament to the off-road capability of Toyota Tacomas with half decent ATs. I've got the same truck in 4x4 TRD OR trim, and I rarely touch 4WD, even on some pretty gnarly terrain. Four wheel drive was a necessity, and there were some times when we really didn’t know if we could get out of places we’d gotten into. I built a 1928 International for Quaker Steak and Lube in Pittsburgh PA in about 2006 - and a 1914 Ford Flat-Bed for an Old Timer in Georgia who's Family for about 150 years worked for a guy who had a Cotton Farm and a Peach or Walnut Farm somewhere down there - but the Farmer guy had no family when he passed so he left the entire Farm to the Old-Timer (and his Family) who was in his 20's at the time the farmer passed and he always talked about that Truck so I restored it for him in 2003 for his 70'th Birthday. Great Guy and a Lot of Fun riding around in that old Truck. They sure don't make them like they Used To - (well, that little Bronco surprised me tho on the Sandy Hill Video actually) anyway, Love Yall's Attitudes and Family Style - Man I would give Anything for that atmosphere... I might move to Nevada - haven't really decided yet, but if I did I would come hang out and help on projects for Free just because I love the Vibes plus - Yall are Great!

I love that area! I live in Las Vegas and explore around the Gold Butte area quite a bit. Really enjoyed the video and am amazed at the terrain you'll tackle to make a recovery. Well done! Fun fact, mica is a mineral used in makeup foundation, electrical insulation and as a filler in asphalt and cement.

Mica is used for high temperature windows in furnaces, in some capacitors, as glitter in some automotive paints(mostly use plastics now), as high temperature electronics insulation, an additive to well drilling mud, and many other uses.

Great to know that Kolin is recovering so fast and so well(sorry if the name spelling is wrong :/ :) ). Had a few operations myself, and there is nothing like finally starting to see that unreachable light at the end of the tunnel getting bigger and bigger (meaning it's not a million miles away anymore)and that victory coming so close that you can smell it. At that point, sometimes you can even forget to eat and drink as that feeling alone of things starting to click again makes you so alive and energised.

Damn, but this doesn't surprise me. In 1991, I drove the ex gf's little Hyundai, up what looked like a small bush road N.E of Sudbury, Ontario. It got rockier, smaller; a small stream had channeled out the road, a felled tree had to be pulled aside, etc. I had to put a rock under one front wheel to keep it from spinning while hung up. ALL with TWO wheel drive. No big deal. I emerged off some other grassy tracks miles away, stopped for gas and commented to the attendant. "That road's pretty bad." He told me- "That's NOT a road. That's a skidoo trail." !

I'm OK with people taking risks, like climbing Mt Everest, so long as they take full responsibility for their actions and don't socialize the cost if/when things go sideways, like filing an insurance claim 'cause they wrecked their new Raptor wheelin'.

@c-qc-q2021 Curious why you think insurance is socializing the cost. We get raked over the coals on premiums and deductibles all because it's mandated by law (for good drivers) I've had no "at fault" accidents in 20 years of driving and my total damage amount to all my vehicles in that time was around $10k. Guess how much I've paid in premiums over 20 years?

Even without the diff failure, his trip was just about over. Go back and look at the steep grade with loose rock they pulled him up initially. The wrecker was hunting for traction with all 4 wheels locked. That 2wd even had street tires. It didn't belong there.@@Kozycz

Admiration for the guy who took his rig that far with 2wd, but this is the exact reason I didn't even consider a 2wd when I bought my truck. To me, the 2 main points of having a truck are towing capacity and 4wd.
