Matt- we need a book out of you. “Off-road recovery in the American Southwest” so many of us from Denver to San Francisco have found ourselves in the accursed wastelands and the snowy pinyon- juniper elevations- possibly in need of a little help if we weren’t accompanied by like- minded friends. A LOT of recovery gets handled by one’s group/club. But if someone is alone and the music stops- there’s you. And they have a deep existential decision to make. Your family (and dog) oriented aid gives off-road-hopefuls a dose of the realities involved. Do I want to pursue this, or should I figure something else out ? You’re giving second chances to the curious. The Off-road Industry needs you.

It's great that they can support this with the KZbin videos and the app subscriptions. Otherwise, recovery from some of these situations would be hideously expensive for the person who breaks down on the trail. The usual choice is to get a bunch of wheeling enthusiasts together to slowly work the victim out of the jam, but that can take days and often involves collateral damage. With Matt (and Paul and Rory in there respective territories) and others like him, there's a way to get out a lot quicker, and we get to watch.

Matt, have you considered a "tow bar" type setup to latch in where the D-Rings are on the back of the wrecker and bolt into the towed vehicles trailer hitch? You would still do the lifting with the boom and winch, but the tow bar would keep the tow from surging forward and running into the back of the wrecker. The Holmes 440 that I ran ages ago had a sling and straps arrangement that had an A brace that kept the tow from surging forward. I don't know that a sling makes sense with lots of aftermarket bumpers to cut them, but the brace would seem to.
@garymoon28294 ай бұрын
Matt replies occasionally to all the suggestions like this, saying that a more rigid link is incompatible with the very un-level terrain on most recoveries. With a skilled driver like Katelynn on a recovery, maybe all these "suggestions" for a tow bar or sling etc are just not necessary!
@mmodtomic7119 Жыл бұрын

14:35 .. All you need, to stop the towed vehicle form impacting the boom, for these tall lifts, is solid link, (instead of straps or ropes) to the rear axle. They could be made out of heavy wall aluminum telescoping style box tubing so they are adjustable for length. Attached to the wrecker with heavy pins , so they can pivot up and down, but not too much side to side, and the towed vehicle with simple, round steel axle clamps, and similar pins. Or in many cases like this just to the back bumper recovery hooks! :)

You should get a couple piece's of schedule 80 PVC plumbing pipe to put over your X towing straps with just the loops sticking out, that way it would be semi rigid and keep the tow from smashing into the wrecker. The rear part of the wrecker that connects to the other vehicle needs to be rigid. Something that can pivot, something like a 3-point hitch of the tractor just backwards, that u can setup for the aplication, connect to the vehicle that is rescued, and after to the rear part of the wrecker, so the other vehicle cannot hit the wrecker, yet it can be lifted by winches. Sorry my english has some mistakes! Keep up the Great work! Greetings from Serbia!

That was a "good old days" recovery right there. Enjoyed it!

I have noticed a trend on all of these recoveries, the problem the wrecker has is the boom and the other vehicle get to close. You should fabricate a solid mount from the rear of the wrecker to the other vehicle that is adjustable. Maybe with a spring or shock in the center so it still has flexibility and the ability to articulate yet it keeps the towed vehicle away from the boom or tires of the wrecker.

Great recovery from the MORR Crew. I would say its time dig dug received some much needed love ASAP. I think Tom should paint it an obnoxious bright Red😊😊. It would go perfect with the bright yellow vehicles.

For the future worth making a bar that goes into the towed vehicles reciever hitch and then the other end secures to the wrecker and thw bar could have a heavy duty shock absorber to take the edge off of shock loading either vehicle ? Make the bar adjustable length so you can pick and choose the distance between the towed vehicles roof and wrecker boom

If you took a pole, and drilled holes through it, then another pole that slipped over the first also had holes drilled through it, you could use a hitch pin to change the pole's length. At each end of the pole you weld on an end link. On the end link you weld square tube, like a hitch. Now you have a pole you can change the length, and just put one end in the WLORW rear receiver and the other in the tow's receiver and it will keep the tow from ingress or egress.
