As a rod builder thank you for not selling/recommending rods that are overpowered. I think in a lot of applications "Pro's" tend to recommend rods that overpower a lot of techniques. Medium-Light rods are great for Dropshot and ned rigs but it seems most people think a Medium is what you need. As you overpower the technique you will start to bend out hooks especially on ned rigs.

Good stuff Matt. One of the best pieces of advice I ever got from a professional bass angler, was Tommy Martin at a BASS educational seminar. He said if you want to learn how to fish a new bait well, make that the only lure in your boat. This way you will have to concentrate and focus on fishing the bait properly. There's no temptation to pick up a spinnerbait, charterbait or other go to lure that you have a lot of confidence in. You will be forced to fish it as best as possible and hopefully catch a few fish.

@@MrDeputy83 T-rigs, drop shot, crank baits, tube jigs, spinner baits, frogs, chatterbaits, buzzbaits, in descending order of effectiveness. I fish lagoons, harbors and shoreline from the shore in Chicago. I catch smallmouth and largemouth and the occasional giant Drum. I was lucky with the Ned rig. I just happened to fish it in June for the first time, caught some aggressive fish and that gave me a lot of confidence in it.

Thanks Matt. Not only am I late to this video I was late to the Ned. While fishing a local tournament the other angler was plucking 3lbers with a Ned and I was getting 1lbers with a craw. That went on all day. By the way he never offered me one. I rarely drag a Ned I pop it 1' to 2' off the bottom. I also swing at everything, they can suck that thing in without a line twitch(sneaky shits). It does catch good fish but it also catches alot of pumkinseeds.

I don't use short leader lines anymore. I normally use anything from 20-30 ft that way I'm not constantly typing on new ones and it keeps the main line which is more visible further away from the fish's line of sight.

My best day ever with the ned rig came throwing the finesse TRD on the Shroomz head and at one point I had 5 straight casts catch 5 smallmouth. Earlier in trip I broke my spinning rod and was throwing it on a jerkbait rod that day so if you have the “wrong equipment” here’s a tip - grab the bend of the hook, load the rod slowly and loosen your drag until it’s not flexing too much.

Craziest version for me that’s caught multiple 4-5 lb bass has been a Giant Trd on a magnum Shroomz head. I think it was on suspended bass following schools of small gills at the surface, mid lake. It’s worked so well, that when I was fishing with a friend at the outer weed line, 10 ft, I said “watch this!” and cast away, towards open water. Bam! Another good one!

I have been using the Zoom Ultra Vibe Speed Craw on a 1/8 oz head this early Spring very successfully. Every time I go fishing the Ned rig is the dominant bait that wins the day. I try to catch fish on other baits but it don't happen, but I didn't at first, what I had to do is use flurocarbon a must, then get to most lightest & sensitive rod & reel, which I throw it all on a baitcaster, I think the reason for braid to any line is a way to spend more money, I mainly fish river current so I use 3/16 to 1/4 lead head. A couple of years ago me & my brother we caught over a 80 bass in 1 day using this!

Thanks, just the right level of detail. I live in So Cal your info on hollow body swim baits and Ned rigs will really help. Now I need to go back and inventory what I have regarding floating vs. non floating and different weight sizes. I never thought of it a a bait on the fall.. mostly slow drag along the bottom. Also like your comments on leader length.. I am going to increase the leader length on the 4-5 rods I carry on the boat. In fact, about ready to strip the braid off and just go with fluorocarbon. Take away one bit of complication, not sure the lack of stretch with braid really matters that much with our fishing. Mostly using a variety of soft plastics.

About the only way I can fish a ned bait is on a 1/0 worm hook and a small bullet weight, usually about 1/8 oz or smaller. If I use a ned head, that line tie and head just get all mucked up. I've even tried it on a shaky head, but I get about the same result. But I do use a spinning reel with a 6'10" medium/fast rod. The line is 10 lb braid and I use a 10 lb Trilene leader. I want a little extra stretch so I use mono.

My experience has been someone similar to yours. I tried the Ned rig over the last 3 years and never had much luck. This year I got a new lighter rod to work on my Ned and drop shot skills. Last Sunday I had my first good Ned day, it out fished every thing else I tried. The new rod helped immensely and I believe lure selection helped as well. If you haven't tried missle baits Ned bomb give it a shot it out fished all the other Ned lures I tried, baby bass black tail is the juice.

Even a 1/0 hook seems huge. At table rock and stockton in the Ozarks, I prefer a 1/16th oz ball head jig with a #2 light wire hook. 4-6# sos line or fc line. no braid. 4 inch chompers drop shot worm in brown purple laminate. Growing up mainly fishin for crappie on a double jig, I thought….hmmmm, maybe I can do something similar for bass. So several years ago I started tying maribou on a drop shot hook and placing it 10”-18” up the line (8lb flouro)and using Ned as my bottom bait. It’s a double presentation that has worked for me and yes it’s friggin exhilarating when a 2nd fish thumps the other bait, especially with the light tackle.

Interesting point about using a really long leader for finesse fishing. It makes a lot of sense. Maybe the topic of leaders in general would make a good video on it's own? You mention using the longer leader with braid, but would your opinion change if using mono with a flouro leader? Would different baits, fishing techniques, water clarity, other variables impact length and type of leader? Etc, etc, etc. As far as favorite ned baits, I often go with a Z-man BugZ when I want something that falls more slowly and glides much more than any standard finesse worm.

@@MattStefanFishing I experimented a bit with a longer leader over the weekend. One problem I saw was that the knot between leader and main line would catch line coming off the spool when casting, shortening my casting distance. I have more luck with the ticklerz and Hula stickz than anything else. But the heads are what really interests me- I've noticed the same thing as you- the smaller, lighter heads get me more bites. That's really aggravating because I fish a lot of current and I try to use the heavier heads to be able to do so but- they just don't get the results the smaller lighter heads get. The new ewg style heads are great for not snagging but, I haven't had near the luck with them as I have with regular, shroom headz. I've tried the colored heads too- so far, not one bite on them. The spots around here seem to like a little chartreus on the bait, but not on the head. Or maybe it's because they're the Nedlockz heads which are much heavier duty. Maybe I should try some chartreus finesse shroom heads.

What type of knot do you tie between your braid main line and your fleuro leader? I use an alberto knot and I find I have trouble getting the knot to go through the guides.

So if you’re using a longer leader then your braid to fluoro connection knot is getting down into your spool. Have you found that creates any issues while casting? I was under the impression you didn’t want that connection knot to get down into the spool. The ned rig has slowly become my favorite technique because it flat out catches fish but the hardest part of fishing it for me has been conditioning myself to slow down and not overwork the bait.

Do you keep the same leader philosophy with casting setups? I usually make a 20 or 30 foot leader for my spinning gear just to avoid tying a leader all the time, but with my casting gear, even using an FG knot, I hate having it in the spool, so I always make my casting leaders the length of the rod to avoid the knot in the spool.

As a shore angler, I like to fish a weedless ned rig with an EWG style head since there are lots of submerged trees where I fish. What setup would you suggest for that? Would you consider making a video for this? Eitherway, Thank you!

@@ianfung503 I highly recommend the Z-Man Finesse Bulletz jig head, size 1/10 or 1/15. Has the EWG style hook, and works perfect with any size TRD and also the Z-Man Slim Swimz 3 inch swim bait.

That's all I use, if I'm using the standard trd I use the Zman Ned Lockz ewg, and if I'm using bigger ned baits I use the Lifted Jigs ewg, I have lost so many regular ned heads it isn't funny

Thanks for the videos, Matt. I use spinning reels alot (Georgian Bay). Is backreeling only useful on big, big fish? Randy B. backreels exclusively, and that seems like a lot of practice to get right. When do you backreel? When do you use your drag? For a serious, yet recreational angler, is this something I need to be thinking about?
@MattStefanFishing
@MattStefanFishing 2 жыл бұрын
Im not a fan of back reeling. A good spinning reel will have a great drag system that works much better than backreeling in my opinion.

I know I sound like a broken record… but the next time you go to throw a ned (if you have em’) throw a fat ika…. Don’t know what the hell it is with it, but I do 3x more damage with a fat ika in the same spot I’ve killed with Ned’s. When smallys are shallow, like where the ned destroys, the ika out produces

If u fish smallies in a river the Ned rig absolutely smashes em, I go thru pack after pack of split tail stick-o, watermelon red, after that it's z man anything z man and I'm usually using the shroom jig that Matt showed, 1-10th unless the current is hard then gotta up it.
