This was very informative. Thank you Matt for these kinds of videos. Currently enlisted in the Army as an E3 and get shipped off to bootcamp in January 2024. Always had my heart and mind set towards becoming an officer after being enlisted, but wasn’t fully informed on what pathways to take to reach me there. This video really gave me a sense of direction, and now considering enrolling in ROTC after basic training and tech school. Thank you Again Matt!

When I watched this before I went to BCT/AIT and not 100% set on ROTC yet, I did not fully comprehend the all the amazing and wonderful information, but now that I am in the program and about to officially start school this Fall, I am really soaking up everything you are saying. This has been so much more helpful than the "informational" websites the military likes to put online, but are too general to help answer any of my real questions/confusions. Once again, thank you so much, sir!

Hey, Matt! I hope you see this!! I enlisted into the Army reserve and will be leaving to bct in March 2018, with 1 semester at a community college already completed. When I get home from AIT, I intend on going back to school to get my BA degree in Chemistry. I’ve recently started thinking about ROTC and I’m pretty confused. So you started ROTC as a junior (bc of military experience) but did you already have enough college experience to match with being a third year in ROTC? (From what I gathered, you would need your BA by the time you graduate ROTC) Or how did that process go for you? Hopefully I communicated that well enough to be understood lol. Hope to hear from you!

Thanks for the amazing video! I wanted to ask, what if you are already in the national guard and join the ROTC program, and then 4 years later you graduate, do you have to resign a whole new 8 year contract as an officer, or finish out your remaining contract. Active or IRR?

If the ROTC program pays you, you will have to do service even if you're already in the Army.

Like what you did. I'm leaving to BCT in August 22, 2017 and planning to attend ROTC at UNC Charlotte in the spring of 2018. The only difference is that I will be a freshman joining than a junior like what you did. Watching this video made me rethink my plan because I never knew it was possible joining ROTC as a junior. I planned to risk it all financially going to a four year university like UNCC because I know you can sign a SMP as a sophomore. But now knowing I can go to my local community college for 2 years which is Vance Granville and transfer to an university with ROTC I would definitively go that route. I would like to know what you think. Thanks!
@MattWard897 жыл бұрын
The only reason I could transfer into the ROTC program as a junior is because I was already in the military. If you are already in the military you can skip the first 2 years of ROTC. That being said, if you want to go the normal route of ROTC you have to do the whole 4 years at the school. Also, if you are going to UNCC maybe we might run into each other at some point!
@cielrosario18497 жыл бұрын
Shootemup89 so if I skip the first 2 years, I'll be commissioned as an officer in 2 years?

Thanks man I learned even more about ROTC. Question, the GI Bill Kicker $500ish you got, was that part of your reserve contract? My ROO told me I could get $350 GI Bill Kicker on top of the $369 montgomery 1606 GI Bill, but my unit doesn't really know about that Kicker. What steps did you take to make that happened?
@MattWard897 жыл бұрын
A lot of it is a high asvab score and what not. I didn't really do anything aside from join at the right time and do well on the asvab. At the time I joined $250 was the MAX for the kicker. So, it may be higher now, idk. Just ask your recruiter. That kicker is something that will be on your initial contract. It doesn't have to do with your unit.
@lifeofdyy12105 жыл бұрын
I think the kickers max is $350 that’s what I’m recovering.

What other classes do you take? If i take your route and skip two years of rotc in college after AIT, will i still graduate with a bachelors of some sort. Or does it only allow me to become an officer. Im planning on joining reserves and then after ait, i want to take college so i can earn a bachelors degree since it is required for the fbi.
@lifeofdyy12105 жыл бұрын
Shanaya Hurley you will get your bachelors... that comes with going t college for the 4 years. You will still be an officer. Also with the SMP program you can choose to go active duty or an officer in the National Guard. You have to when you do the SMP program.

@MattWard897 жыл бұрын
Idk if it's a typo in your comment but when I was talking about contracting, that's with ROTC. You have to still enlist for the reserves and do that contract. In this case you can do ROTC without a contract but once you decide that you for sure want to be an officer you can "contract" with the ROTC program.

Hey I have a question. At rotc they said I would qualify for either a $10,000 housing allowance or my tuition paid for. If I chose the housing allowance, am I able to commute and avoid living on campus? And still obtain the $10,000 for my own bills?

You can choose based on what you want to do. I went in after OSUT and started as an MS2 instead of an MS3, because I didn't have enough credits to graduate. You can choose to go straight into MS3 year if you have enough college credits.

I am in Army ROTC and unfortunately the structure within our programs is pretty awful.. Idk just my experience
@MattWard897 жыл бұрын
That might be the case. UNCC has a pretty good ROTC program and from what people say, like yourself, other programs are just simply not as good. It all really depends on the leadership. If your leadership sucks, ROTC will probly suck. It's also fairly apparent that other schools don't do as good of a job teaching as our school. It's pretty obvious when we do the JFTX and other cadets seem clueless.

Yes, as long as your ROTC battalion gets slots, most big schools will get a couple of slots for Airborne and Air Assault. Ask your cadre about it. Most schools will look at the order of merit list and/or have tryouts to attend that school. You can go, but you have to compete for the slots.
