Had one from 2012 to 2016. The only major issue I had was with the DRC. It was cheaper to go with aftermarket coil overs than have the DRC replaced. If I recall correctly the cam belt needs replacing every 40k, which at the time was around £1k, so probably more now. As Matt said, the gearbox is showing it’s age, but I don’t recall any actual mechanical issues with it. Just make sure if you’re considering buying one, do your research, shop around for a good one and have your RS slush fund topped up just in case.

I’ve heard the biggest problem with this model is the transmission. I almost bout the sedan version of this but the transmission was slipping and the center computer screen had many dead pixels which made reading any warnings very hard.
@kennywallace12 жыл бұрын
I had one of these for 4 years. Loved it. 5 years later still regret selling it. Few owners and low mileage are musts if buying as is solid history. There is no such thing as a cheap RS6, you either pay for it up front or pay for it in maintenance. DRC usually gets replaced with coilovers for about £2k, as it’s so unreliable. I had Bilstein PSS9’s set close to original ride height and rebound on 6 clicks. Make sure gearbox has been serviced, even rebuilt, as that’s a £7k bill when it goes pop, and it will go pop at some point as the clutch pack will wear out. Cam cover gaskets sweat oil, which drips on the manifolds and causes an intermittent burning smell. Discs and pads are £2k when they need done. Tyres lasted me about 8000 miles on Pirelli’s or Continental. Averaging 20mpg is about right, which equates to about 300-350 miles from it’s 80 litre tank. A heavy right foot will drop the mpg to 5. Find a reliable independent Audi specialist familiar with working on these, you will become very good friends. I spent about £25k on maintenance over the 4 years I had it. I did 40k miles in it, which equated to £5k in fuel over 4 years when it was about £1.10 a litre for 98 octane. It should only be run on high octane fuel as it prevents engine knock, which can be a challenge to find in remote areas. Insurance was about £400 annually and emissions tax was £260. And I’d bought an unmodified 50k mile one owner car with immaculate history that added up to £30k+. These are getting close to 20 years old now, so things will go wrong and the bill typically has 4 figures. You’re not buying a £10k-£15k car, you’re buying a £60k supercar for £10k-£15k. Budget accordingly.

@Slavic Dude No idea, never owned one. But to speculate I would guess so. The auto box is the weak link in the drivetrain. S6’s supposedly lack any power low down in the rev range so quite slow off the mark, which is probably why the RS was given twin turbos to compensate. The RS6 and the S6 might look fairly similar, but they are very different animals.

So many car KZbinrs are not hindered with any technical knowledge, otherwise he would have known that you do not rev any car with a slushbox (a car with automatic gearbox and a torque converter). This is often also the reason that manufacturers are fitting rev limiters because of the damage you can cause to dual mass flywheels / catalytic converters / torque converters / bodywork (plastics) from extreme heat build up / and all kind of thermal heat damage to the engine and its components.

I personally would not be going anywhere near a C5 RS6. As people have said there are many known issues with this car. The gearbox can not cope with the power and generally fails after 40K. I bought one back when they were sensible money, with 15K of service history and it was essentially written off owing to the cost of issues found after 3 weeks of ownership. As per the internet, the Dynamic Ride System is not fit for purpose, so needs to be swapped in favour of a Coilover solution that defeats the object of having the suspension Audi designed for the car, and you need to have 4 or 5 k saved up for a gearbox rebuild when it fails. Then there is the fact it is now coming up for 20 years old. Add 2 turbos, radiator and water pipes just waiting to leak. I am so surprised to see there fetching what they are fetching when they are ticking timebombs. I wish this was not the case, but with the older S and RS models you need a low-mile garage queen that has been Audi maintained and given so much care, or they are money pits, and as I have had a C5 RS6, B6 S4, B6 RS4, B5 RS4, 2001 S3 and currently have a B5 S4, I believe I'm well placed to comment. Always good to watch you Mat, but scary stuff...

Audi interiors age beautifully in terms of design and quality; although this generation of Audi had the horrible plastic buttons coated in a thin rubber which would peel off and look disgusting. Other interior trim pieces such as the sun visor hooks and plastics lower down the dash become brittle with age, but the EU had recently passed a legislation regarding biodegradable materials at the time this car was built so the manufacturers hadn’t perfected the chemistry of the plastic mouldings in the early 2000s. Also explains many electronic issues due to corroded and brittle plastic wording looks for the same reason

The RS6 plus is great but it's definitely not cheap, never was and never will be. If you even buy this cheap you will surely spend a lot of money for repairs and maintenance costs. Add 20k for redoing trans/suspension/cam tensioners/interior and you got yourself a 35k car.

Hi Mat, can you please do a BMW X5 E53 review? I think they are awesome cars and one day they will shoot up in value, since it was the first proper driver's SUV and they handle beautifully. Thank you.

E39 M5 is better, RWD,Manual, a great N/A engine, better looking also better chassis

Interior looks better than the current one imo. Although heater and blower dials would be better than having multiple buttons. The current rs6 looks way too big and not very subtle

People have to remember that they may be cheap now but they were expensive to buy new so don't expect ownership to be cheap when parts are needed.. After all this is not a ford fiesta

I have a 2004 Mugello Blue C5 RS6. Bought for 37k in 2010. I've spent that same amount in repairs alone.. not including OCD level maintenance. DRC - will fail, more than once.. do a coilover conversion with something like PSS9s. Transmission and Torque Converter. Both have major issues at stock power. Valve bodies fail, and by this point a lot of them have converters that are about to or are currently taking a fat dump on your wallet. Brakes - they phenomenal. They're also Gallardo brakes. Cool right? Just realize that 20k you just spent to buy a really awesome and quick TT V8 Sedan/Avant... that brake job will cost you 15% of what you just spent on the whole car. Pray your rotors are new(er). That's a whole different story. Oh and the caliper slides are notorious for rusting as well. That being said. I still own mine. And I love it. I'm also a masochist. Every car I own falls into the category of "really cool and fun, but a nightmare". If you can somehow fanangle a aftermarket warranty then go for it. Otherwise, grab an APB/APY 6 speed C5 Allroad. Just think about that. The 2.7TT being the sensible, more cheap to maintain option.

There’s a sprint blue rs6 plus (1/7 sprint blue plus cars) for sale on auto trader right now. It was up for 25k a week ago and now dropped to 23k. I was talking with the previous owner in 2020 when he was selling it. It was for sale for a long time and that was just under £17k. An increase of at least £5k in 2 years I’ve been looking at rs6’s c5 and c6 for sale every day for the last 3 years. I’ve found that the prices are starting to get ahead of themselves. The prices for them are shooting up and right now it’s the worst time ever to own one. The higher priced cars have been for sale for months/years and are simply not selling. Then any owner wanting to sell sees these high priced cars and bumps theirs up too so nothings moving except from the decent examples that have been priced right.

I have always said that Audi had better solid feel in their cars before, the first A8 was like a safe. Smoking in cars are on the rise again, I see tons of people smoking in their car. I think its mostly due to the word that cannot be said...

You should review the B8.5 RS5 (2013-2015). I would love to get your impression of the 4.2l in the RS5!

Honestly my mate has a remapped 330d X Drive that is almost as quick as this on paper. Paid 10k for it. Returns 60mpg plus on a run. Sure it doesn't sound as nice but i just couldn't do it. If it was half the price of the 300d then maybe but makes no sense at that age. Oh anmd the 8 speed ZF in the 330d is leagues ahead- genuinely impressive!

Oh and Matt claiming it doesn't understeer when being driven well within it's limits is hardly a shocker. Come on now!
