In the 1930's, the U.S. was fascinated with anything having to do with Paris! For the wealthy, a Paris maid was all the rage! Women seeking a job as a maid, simply faked a french accent and got the job! Clothing manufacturers added fake "Made in Paris" tags to increase sales. Cheap, knock-off dresses were made of Paris originals n sold for much less. The 1930's were ripe with Paris raquets. Maurice Chavalier, with his thick french accent, was a handsome singer/actor in the U.S. and Paris. Even in his 60's when he starred in GiGi, with Leslie Caron n Louis Jordan, he was still very attractive n had lots of fans! His early movies with Jeanette McDonald when he was in his mid 20's, there was no one more beautiful, more perfect than Maurice Chevelier!

Chevalier was actually in his 40s when he worked with Jeanette MacDonald, and almost 70 when he made "Gigi"! All the more remarkable.

My understanding is that this segment was originally IN COLOR; I hope that it is restored!

I believe it was shot in two-toned technicolor - print lost - however, now that films can be colored in - perhaps this loverly scene may - one day return to its former glory - but for now - we have Maurice. -

Thank you for those beautiful treasures. I never knew those songs of Maurice Chevalier youth. In France when I discovered him he was already with grey hair and well over 50 years old.

The song that ended the great film Le Chagrin et le Pite ( The Sorrow and the Pity) regarding French collaberation with the Germans in WWII. Chevalier sang this song after defending himself against such charges on short film clip that he ends with this song.

The most positive, uplifting sequence in film history! Even if it’s just a black and white rainbow, I can still see all the colors! 🌈.

This has got to be remastered and put out on BluRay. Some way, some how. Love Maurice Chevalier´s charisma in this segment ever since i first listened to him at the opening of Disney's The Aristocats. I swear to God, this is too good to turn down and let rot in the ashes for another 90 odd years.

@@celticjewel913 Lamentably, the original Technicolor negative and all known color prints of this sequence do not survive. When made available to television in the 1950s, _Paramount on Parade_ was offered in a heavily abriged edition. "Sweeping the Clouds Away" was presented in black and white while the other color sequences was cut completely. The UCLA film archives, however, has restored some of the color, but this sequence, unfortuately, survives only in black & white.
@celticjewel9133 жыл бұрын
Hi jknuttel; thank you for your comment. I will have to look into this more. I was given to believe that color restoration was a possibility for "Sweeping the Clouds Away." However, ANY restoration of ANY kind will be appreciated on this sequence; (and, I would certainly welcome seeing any work on "Paramount on Parade," as it is historical footage which should be restored/preserved.) Any news on when the UCLA Film Archives will release something for public viewing--?

@@celticjewel913 UCLA Film Archives does not on the rights to this film, so it's not up to them to make it available on DVD or blu-ray. It believe the rights are currently owned by Universal.

Bless you for posting this!! It was up here at one time, but was taken down at least two or three years ago. Inspired foolishness, as you noted. This whole film has plenty of great numbers, including Clara Bow's "True To The Navy," which I believe was the first time her voice had been heard on film. From the early days of talkies, I can just imagine how much fun this would have been on a huge screen at the time. Thanks again!!

What a shame the original TECHNICOLOR negative is lost, and all that exists now is a B&W transfer print (that was made in the 1950's to show on B&W television) :(

SWEEPING THE CLOUDS AWAY Written by Sam Coslow As recorded by Maurice Chevalier, 1930. [from the film "Paramount on Parade"] VERSE: Don't go round moping, hoping happiness will come. That's not the way. It doesn't pay. If you want happiness, just help yourself to some. Why don't you try to Take life the way I do? CHORUS: Let the whole world sigh or cry. I'll be high in the sky, Up on top of a rainbow, Sweeping the clouds away. I don't care what's down below. Let it rain; let it snow. I'll be up on a rainbow, Sweeping the clouds away. I have learned life's lesson: fighters who always win Are those who can take it right on the chin-and grin. And so I shout to ev'ryone: Find your place in the sun, Up on top of a rainbow, Sweeping the clouds away.
