In this video I emphasize the importance of regular inspection and a pre-flight check of your DJI Mavic Mini’s propellers to maintain safe and stable flight. I go through many of the signs and and symptoms of bad propellers and I also go in to detail on how to removed damaged propellers and install new ones. Lots of tips and important information for any Mavic Mini owner. As always, thanks for watching!

As always, thanks. Very helpful. DJI is really bad about not telling people up front about how to fix things. I had no idea how critical the props are. You have saved a bunch of people from the grief of losing their mini.

Thanks Don, I appreciate it. There definitely was a prop issue out of the gate for some but I don't think it's likely DJI will ever make some kind of statement about it. They will just quietly fix it.

Was unaware of the marked/unmarked factor (100% entirely my own ignorance): after it took off but immediately wanted to fly upside down, I swapped the propellers to the correct position as per this video and it's flying with no problems. Thanks!

Great reminder Steve! As retired military, it was drilled into our heads to always perform a quick once over (service inspection or SI) before operating any type of equipment. Yes, these actions can and will often become mundane and seem like a waste of time. Human nature is to take a short cut and skip it. However, as you stated, these checks are simple, easy and take just a few seconds. Eventually, checks becomes a good habit and second nature. Otherwise, Murphy’s law...”what can go wrong, will go wrong”. At the end of the day, a straight upwards take off over time becomes a very slight off center take off hence the new norm. Before long...we think no big deal until it is a big deal. New subscriber ✌🏼😎

Thanks Steve! Great points! I had acquired the bad habit of not checking the props often with my Spark because that tank could fly just fine with some pretty beat up propellers. Not so with the Mini. Cheers! 👍

Great job! The blue material on the prop screw is thread-lock and it is one use only. I have worked as an aircraft and heavy equipment mechanic where thread-lock is used frequently. The colors of it correlate to it's strength and blue is the most commonly used color in my experience. The advice about changing props in pairs along with the screws is very important and should not be ignored. Thanks for the time producing this very informative video, Steve.

My Mini has been acting a bit erratic the past couple of flights...drifting while hovering, not landing quite near home point, and last flight it did one of those bouncing off the ground moves!! I’m just glad I was over land and not water. Upon further inspection I noticed some very tiny nicks on the rear props. I hope after I change them, this rectifies this behavior. I’m nervous about changing them, but found your video very helpful. Thanks for posting 😎

My mini gave me a warning that said. "Motor spinning too fast" when I brought it back the bottom left motor started vibrating. The props looked fine to me so I kept flying. But when I brought it home I noticed that there was a slight bend when comparing it to a spare propellor. Now i know that one side of the propellor is curved and one side should be completely flat
@SteveCoutts

Good observation. The Mini's propellers are very delicate, even the slightest deformity can cause issues. I think it was the .0500 firmware where DJI added motor specific error messages, a really great addition for sleuthing out propellers issues. Happy flying!

Steve, another power warning and slow drop and battle of the operator and drone for .5 miles. I am finally going to use your prop video. If you don’t mind, I will Plug the living crap out of your channel if this works. These drones are so fragile, but they are not, at the same time. I will not do another full crash video, just discussions about Mini and it’s many quirks. I flew my Mavic 2 zoom today. OMG what a liberating feeling. A big glorious massively stable bird. Eagle in graceful flight. Mavic Mini is like trying to control an addiction to anything bad. I can control it, I know what I’m doing. 🤪🤪 I can Fix it. I don’t need any help......

Right. I myself read my question and it did not any sense. What I was saying was that in the simple version it only gives two extra propellers what is odd. It would at least give two sets one marked props and the other unmarked.
@SteveCoutts
@SteveCoutts 4 жыл бұрын
DJI's description is kind of confusing. With the basic kit you get one extra "pair" of propellers. A pair you would think is two but it's actually four propellers - two of each kind - marked and unmarked. The Fly More Combo gives you three extra "pairs", which is actually 12 individual propeller blades or 6 sets, three of each kind. Cheers!

Can you do a demonstration test of how strong the propellers are? For instance, will they cut paper. Can you show if the propellers dangerous; will they cut you, etc.?
@SteveCoutts
@SteveCoutts 4 жыл бұрын
I am not likely to do something like that but never say never, I guess right? The Mini's props are very thin, light and flexible. They will cut paper - no problem. If you catch your finger the right way, it's possible you could cut it. I'm not willing to try that either - haha. I tend to fly the Mini low and close to things and have certainly done my share of grass and leaf trimming. Sticking anything significant in the path runs the risk of destroying the propellers as well as possibly damaging the motor. Cheers!

Steve. Small point, which you demonstrated but did’t mention. The drone should be sitting on a flat surface for the blade replacement. Under no circumstances should this be done holding it in the air with one hand and the screwdriver in the other. I’ve seen people destroy glasses and sunglasses this way AND lose the screw and /or cross thread it in the process.
@SteveCoutts

No vibration issues, quality seems good, no errors in the flight logs - all good. I think mileage is going to vary on these though, lots of different "brands" offering the same propeller. May do a video after I thoroughly vet them. Cheers!

I would also mention that these little screws are easy to crossthread, so make sure, even if you've cranked down a new propeller til it won't go anymore, that the blade is seated well. I say this from bitter recent experience (that came out okay, but it was scary). Also, from TODAY"S experience, make sure the blades are tucked away well in your case or whatever. I opened my off brand case today to find that one of my propellers got bent inside the case.

So i finally figured it all out just by going through the motions and the facts on this speaks very loud. I'm gonna mostly let the pics and videos do a good bit of the explanation itself. If you keep in mind that the entire head of the drone cut out in the case from motor cut outs to nose tip is the same flat level in the case Notice where the ridge starts and stops as well. Just as it sits on this flat mirror is as it would sit in a flat bottom case if it needed to as in such case as I have. As far as the props are concerned it might as well be a totally flat case just like my flat bottom MPP Fly more case I modified and use for the Mini. Theres nothing more that the flatness of the bottom of the case can do than this flat mirror does to bend anything if you store it the way i have for a year now. Self sticking velcro strip i got off my MPP CHARGING CABLE. JUST A SIMPLE CABLE WRAP. If you pay attention to my pics and video you'll see that storring your mavic mini this way is really the only way to do it without worrying about an issue. As you can see the that grey tape on the mirror would be where that raised edge/red line starts and stops. Any other way of folding them than directly across as you see will bend them at all random places depending on how they lay each time. Start out with the design of the case and drone body lines. The red mark represents the grey tape i used. Blades running directly under motors precisely. The raise in the case is 1/2 inch. The motors and prps and velcro thickness only 1/4 inch. The props never touch bottom in the fly more case this way. They constantly remain un touched and couldn't possibly warp the props. What all this means is that ANY OTHER WAY is bad news on the props and Mini. Everyone's over all knowledge of this varies from clueless to now the truth and facts that I can't see being disputed b a smart individual. But I realize there's hundreds of new owners everyday and some are just finding out about the issue. I know many will need more info than this and I'll answer questions but I'm wanting the ones that have some knowledge of whats going on to be see this. The pics and video and explanation alone will be enough for them to understand. Study these pics good and you shouldnt need much more explanation. linksharing.samsungcloud.com/nafrqrJSpH6r kzbin.info/www/bejne/maaqgZR5qtCmm80 kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3i8knqvjK96las kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5qpeZeundKGfNk kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJzckmqZYrWArtU kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJ3ZhmVoYqejrbM kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGm3iX2vpK5njbc

How do you analyse flight records? And how do you offload them from Mavic? Is there some page in process. Google didn’t help me, so decided to ask

You can download a DJI Assistant app directly from DJI.com to pull the flight records and then upload them on Airdata.com. The DJI Assistant doesn't work very well on Mac, which is what I use so I just pulled them directly from my iPhone using Finder (Mac OS 10.15.x and above). I was thinking about doing a video but I suspect the majority of folks run Windows and Android and I have neither. Hope that helps.

1:38 Same as like mine , its always turn right. Which props that i have to replace ? Only both right motor ? Or only damaged prop ?
@SteveCoutts
@SteveCoutts 4 жыл бұрын
If it's going backwards on takeoff I would think the back props are not producing sufficient lift. I would try replacing one motor at a time to see if the problem goes away. You need to replace both props on the same motor with new propellers from the same package - they have to be replaced in pairs. The latest .0500 firmware has the ability to detect and display certain propeller/motor anomalies. If you're not seeing that, then perhaps it's not able to auto-detect the issue. Worst case, just replace all 8 with new props. They are not that expensive. Good luck!

Why do you need replace both propellers at the same time? Is there any good reason or just because manual says so?
@SteveCoutts
@SteveCoutts Жыл бұрын
First and foremost it's a recommendation from DJI. Every pair of propellers may be slightly different from every other pair so by installing in pairs form the same package you are mostly assured that you'll have a balanced pair on a particular motor. By only replacing one propeller you ~could~ be introducing an imbalance, which can lead to unwanted vibration and/or motor damage over time. I replace them in pairs even though it seems quite wasteful. The propellers are relatively cheap and I don't need to replace them that often so it's not really worth messing with. Personally I wish DJI would put a little effort in and come up with quick swap propellers because frankly I can't stand the screw-in variety. Cheers!

Hello, I have seen so many videos on the DJI mini 2, from 'experts' or people like yourself who know them very well. Today, after 8 months of not using it, I found my drone not working because one of the motors (F.L) does not turn!!!... I HAD NEVER HEARD that from anyone!.. Well, the motor does not turn and I get a message "Motor unable to rotate (code 30142)". I searched YT and I found not that many videos on the subject and half of them were not in English so... But in one video, this guy fixed the problem by "refreshing" the recent FIRMWARE UPDATE. It seems that is where the problem lies, but again, I have not found much on this on the web and DJI's web has nothing on it. DJI seems like a shitty company when it comes to support. I had tried to get some help from them before, on another problem, and then it I realized how little DJI helps out. In other words, I never got to talk to anyone there. BY ANY MIRACLE DO YOU or ANYONE know anything about this problem? TIA.
@SteveCoutts
@SteveCoutts 2 жыл бұрын
I do not have personal experience with the issue so I can't offer any direct advice but I do have a few suggestions to try. My first thought is to manually rotate the motor with the power turned off, listening/feeling for any grinding or obstruction. It could be as simple as some grit obstructing normal movement. Blowing some air on the motor may solve the problem. I guess it's possible a firmware refresh may fix the issue. For that you would need the DJI Assistant 2 software, which can be downloaded here - www.dji.com/ca/mini-2/downloads. If the first two options don't lead to a resolution, I would post a query in the DJI Forum (forum.dji.com). There are lots of experienced folks there who are usually willing to help. The DJI Admins can offer up some good suggestions too. Good luck!

Hey Steve, is it possible to strip the threading On the propeller motor where the screws insert? I can’t seem to get a couple of the screws to stay in.

Yikes! Yeah, I'm sure it's possible. In the back of my mind I always worried a bit about cross-threading or stripping one of those tiny screws but thankfully I haven't done it (knock on wood). Another reason for me to dislike the screw on props. Anyhow, I don't think it's easy to fix. I believe you have to replace the whole motor arm assembly which requires soldering. You may want to post a query in the DJI Forum (forum.dji.com) to see if anyone can offer advice. I have no direct experience with it. Alternatively you can reach out to DJI Support or a local DJI dealer. My guess is it will have to go in for repair and it may not be worth it with shop labour. Good luck, let me know how it works out.

I've just replaced my propellers and I'm a little nervous. Is there anything I should be looking out for in my next flight to tell if there is anything wrong? I'm worried I might have worn some of that blue threadlocker stuff of when I made a mistake and took it off and on again. Is that likely to be a problem? They're on pretty tight till, I'm just nervous as I don't want to risk the drone behaving unreliably.
@SteveCoutts
@SteveCoutts 3 жыл бұрын
My original Mini had propeller issues, brand new, right out of the box. While sleuthing out the issue I uninstalled/re-installed the propellers probably two dozen times or more. DJI recommends you do not re-use the screws but I wasn't about to throw them all away and buy new props just for the screws, so I re-used them. I didn't apply any additional thread lock either. Since replacing my original Mini props, I have not had a propeller issue. So, I suspect you will probably be fine. If you're worried just check that the screws are tight before flying. I was very worried about screws coming loose with this prop design but in the years I've owned my Mini and now Mini 2, I haven't had a single screw come loose. (knock on wood). If there's a propeller issue, I think it's easier to spot at takeoff. If on takeoff the drone leans heavily to one side, forward or back, instead of generally straight up, you may have an issue with props. Cheers!
@1TW1-m5i
@1TW1-m5i 3 жыл бұрын
That is a relief. I'm pretty sure all of them had the blue stuff, but some of them weren't going back in, and there's a change I could have mixed one up. My Mini 1 has been very reliable for its 6 months of life so far. I often fly in urban areas, and the last thing I want is the machine to come down where it shouldn't after promising my neighbours it won't. The whole reason I replaced the props was because I broke one, and despite that, the whole thing only flew with a slight wobble, so hopefully it will be fine. I might look into topping up the threadlock at some point just to calm my nerves.

@SteveCoutts
@SteveCoutts 2 жыл бұрын
Maintaining drone positioning is done with GPS, infrared/vision system sensors and the IMU (gyroscopes, etc). It's uncharacteristic for GPS or the vision system to produce an "extremely fast" movement. It's possible there was a damaged propeller before the wall hit or something more serious. If you don't want to risk it in the air (I likely wouldn't), I would reach out to DJI support and see if they can help. If you're DIY kind of person you could always pull the logs and load them up to a place like AirData.com to see if there is a clue in the log file. Best of luck, cheers!

Yikes! I don't think even DJI lists a "lifespan" per se. The Mini 1 was a bit underpowered so prop health is super important. Just inspect them regularly and replace as necessary, especially if you notice any flight anomalies. I replaced my original props that caused me problems right out of the box and have not replaced them since, over a year later and I fly a lot! Thank you for watching! I have no experience with the landing skids but you should be cautious with non DJI parts as they will void your warranty should something go wrong while using them.
