Max not only played the drums but he SANG through them. He created iconic and instantaneously recognizable licks that are the foundation of the music today, he had some funky grooves and most of all Max was indeed poetic.

Elegant musical swinging drummer always heartbreaking Jazz like this Isn’t around anymore.. sure was an inspiration when it was Philly, Joe Art, Blakey, Roy, Haynes, Elvin Jones, Buddy, Rich, Louie, Bellson, Joe Jones, Gene Krupa.. frank Butler, Shelly Man, Tony Williams. All replaced by machines. Once you put a machine in the band you’re done with a human feel.

the best pure drum sound and swing feel ever, I mean that's hyperbolic but I think it might be true. Let alone the completely original phrasing and language that he invented. On a technical note, the way his arms are thoroughly relaxed, and the wrists whip the stick down into the center of the drum, creating the most beautiful full sound and yet powerful attack, is such a clinic. And he plays every note and accent in the most efficient way to shape the phrase for maximum swing feel, as if he has strings or magnets pulling the sticks down at the exact right moment with the exact right amount of force every time. I know this is called "feel," but it's still amazing! lol
