Interesting interview. I am a 46 year old Indian woman who has lived in USA for 25 years, France for 6 months, in Indonesia for 16 years and now in South India, Chennai for 2 years. I feel the safest here. South India is calmer and safer overall. While India remains a patriarchal society, I really don’t think it is as bad as she describes … women are not second class citizens. I never feel unsafe or mistreated here, unlike in Paris or in Chicago.

The western idea of patriarchy is vastly different from India. If we deep into our history, India as a civilisation gave equal rights to women. Like Vedas are the only religious book in the entire world that has huge women contribution. The Brahmavadini a honorary title given to women sages and scholars who composed many verses in Vedas? That’s patriarchy for you? In train stations which is a very crowded place push and pull is normal. Everybody is in hurry. A man randomly walks past her and his hand slams into her as he hurries on is perversion? The lady needs to leave India ASAP. In America women are grabbed and dragged molested in broad daylight. There are hundreds of videos of such incidents. But that society is very non-patriarchal for her! Here in India we have had queens in her own right. Unlike Europe where queens used to lose their right to be the apex authority once they got married! India also had the first women president only 30yrs after independence. And US is still struggling to find sane president. I’m not saying in a country with 1.4billion people you won’t find a single bad man. But to say India as a society is not safe is ridiculous. First they should make their own country safe. Germany is prostitution capital of Europe! And they have large, powerful, well funded activists and groups who want to legalise paedophilia and normalise such sickness. But nope that is not psychiatric disorder but in a crowded place if a man hurries past her and by god if his hand brushes her it is all wrong. India is full of perverts. Women are not safe in general! Men pls raise you hand in the air, make sure she smell ur armpit odour when you walk past her. Push ppl around no you don’t accidentally touch her.

I understand her saying that women are secondary here and I agree with that. As a woman in India, we have to fight just to make our very own choices whether it is as simple as what clothes to wear, what education to get and whom to marry. your value as an Indian woman comes from how much are you willing to sacrifice for your family in terms of giving up your ambitions, your desires, wishes etc. Indian girls aren't raised to focus just on their careers but more on their duty towards the family. It is tough being an Indian woman when each day you have to fight to have some autonomy in your life and that also comes with a lot of guilt. we are taught that taking care of your husband should be your life's priority even more than taking care of yourself. a woman's well-being is the last thing that anyone thinks about here. as you grow up, you stop fighting for basic shit just to have some peace of mind and then you realise that you have also been modded by this culture to ultimately shut up and tolerate everything, to just give up and satisfy the needs of everyone but you.

The part where she said "it's like a game to them" is very true. As a woman you can't shake the feeling that there's an underlying provocation to these very "unintentional" but very intentional touches. They're saying "what are you gonna do about it?" "What can you even do about it?" "I'm a man hence I can behave however I want in public" "I can let my intrusive thoughts win because it's not like my dignity will lessen if I do cheap tricks, afterall patriarchy is on my side".

spot on, ugh I hate it so much. It has happened to me so many times but I'm from the UK, living in the UK. Maybe it's more common in some parts of the world than others, but it's a man thing in general. Touching when it's so unnecessary. Like you don't need to touch me around the waist to pass me, you'd never do that to another man, so why are you touching me? I've never seen a man stroke another man's lower spine like that 😂

I studied in India AND was molested numerous times , in the train, outside the mall , on the street. They just came close and touch my inner thigh quickly and walk away acting as though nothing has happened. Sometime it happens when there are mob of people around and its difficult to pinpoint who was it. Just shocking!! My friends were touched inappropriately when they were in the train as they were surrounded by men while standing . No one helped them , everyone knew what was happening in the compartment , they had to scream at the men literally to leave them alone and yet they were acting as though nothing was happening. Police didnt do anything , as the men already gone by then.

It´s sad to define how Delhi is, and people there are, by a few rather touristic areas though. I´m a foreign woman having spent a lot of time in Delhi and I love it. Not all areas are good or bad, but that´s the case in most places worldwide. It´s an extremely fascinating city, so rich in history. Food, parks....... Fantastic metro. I avoid spending time in places like Connaught place though, because it really annoys me and brings out the worst of me to have people following me, trying to sell things to me or whatever. I also understand that it´s a priviledge to be able to enjoy the city choosing when and where I go.

For a German Indians are naturally very talkative.. these are just two opposite poles on that.. but for Britishers, or specially for French or Canadians it’s not so much of suprising! I mean I feel Germans are way to shy and sometimes they show lack of communication skills that actually affects themselves in business and in lot more fields..may be it’s because of Language difference... but still if you learn German too.. not necessarily you can communicate your need to people in a Berlin street or platz, may be nobody will help you and ultimately a polizei will come and guide you as part of their duty, that too in a cold mechanical voice.. it’s never easy to make friend or friend group in Germany.. and in India.. just adress someone as bhai, mitra etc and talk nicely and see the magic.. he will help you selflessly... no we are not machine, we make machines and use them...but we are superior from them by our thought process, sensitivity and compassion, what makes us human..

I'm an Indian woman and I agree with you. Have to be careful with the men here. For example, when we dress up to go out, we have to think about the crowd we'll be encountering. If it's a posh place where the men are likely to be educated and don't give a damn about what women are wearing, we can wear anything. But where you'll encounter the bad crowd, you have to be mindful of what you're wearing and who you're talking to. There is a perception with most males here that if a woman is wearing short clothes she's "showing" her body for them and "asking" to be touched and stared and commented on.

Max, you really put her in a spot by asking her to say welcome to India 😂. LOL. I empathise with her. I live in Switzerland and although I can understand high German, my Swiss german is non existent. My reading comprehension of German is much better. German and English are so alike, so that really helps. But Swiss german is a different planet. 😂 I think young Indian men in their twenties asking for a selfie from a woman of her age is not to pretend she's their girlfriend. They most likely just want to show their friends and family back in their small town or city that they met a "foreigner". If she was younger, I can see some cheeky men pretending she's their "foreign girlfriend" 😂 but I think most of the time, it's because they're not used to seeing or interacting with foreigners. Also, as someone born and raised in India, I find it interesting that she felt like a second class citizen in India (even with her foreigner /white privilege). Trust me there is a foreigner /white privilege. I never felt like a second class citizen even though i myself am a woman. 🤔 I know India is a patriarchal society but atleast in the circles I frequent, I've never been made to feel less important. Maybe it's a class thing too. I don't think most middle class educated Indians hold that type of limiting views (men shouldn't talk to non related women). Indians in general (especially in the cities are very liberal and progressive. I find her views interesting. That's her experience and opinion and I can't argue with that but I never felt that. I guess it also depends on how they approach you. It's not so black and white.

Ok let me come to the Rescue for Delhi! I am from Delhi NCR (Gurgaon) and am well traveled for tourism, businesses etc. Delhi isn’t safe not just for women but for men too. Still it is far and far better off from the likes of Paris, London, New York, Chicago etc. I myself am an eye witness of a gun firing in broad daylight in Chicago and later got to know from the locals how common it is, still not going to defend Delhi for what sometimes it isn’t, and to Hope that sometime it isn’t with yourself, you take precautions. But the thing which makes it work anyhow is everyone is aware of the fact that it isn’t safe, to which everyone takes precaution by not visiting certain areas or parts of Delhi after a given time alone which is all by yourself. Key is not to be alone. Still I have and do visit those certain places at certain times alone or with someone and haven’t felt anything like such ever. Avoid North and West Delhi, Ghaziabad, Greater Noida. Noida, south and east Delhi, Gurgaon, Faridabad are better. By Delhi not being safe could be Eve teasing, drunk people, rarely theft and robbery, Ego clash. Just Except your win if ever get into an ego clash with someone by ignoring them instead of being responsive. Most men related incidents are because of this. For Women it’s mostly Eve teasing , so please try to ignore till it could be,after a limit being crossed get close to crowded area and ask for help. Still No city could match Delhi. It’s the best city we got💙

Max MUST READ let me tell u: Iam an Indian hindu girl and I left India in 2015 for Canada, I will tell u the truth: believe me there is not one moment when I don’t miss India, reason is not just because I was born there. The reason is people love others there irrespective of religion, color or financial status. Here in Canada people don’t care for eachother. There are many whites who are very harsh. Also I have aome whites who are very generous. If a brown buys an appartment here in a white community, they separate us or behave like we are not humans. But in India if u call people for help everyone in ur neighborhood would come. Whites think Indian love whites due to their color which is a Misconception. Indians love black as much as they love white, they just become excited to welcome people from other parts of world- may it be from norway or nigeria. There is nothing white or black for them. They really love everyone. Iam from Odisha and was in banglore which was South Indian population but they all love me like family and we never had any differences. They were always there to help and now too they help me when I have left the country for years. Also u will feel the Freedom n doesn’t matter from where u come u are always accepted and people love to celebrate.

Very honest. I was once told when Indian women especially from the North move to developed countries like US, Europe or even China, this first taste of feeling safe in the night is an amazing feeling. This being said, India is a huge country. India can be shown as a shithole, and India can also be shown as a very nice and beautiful country. We have regions where the societies are even traditionally matriarchal (Meghalaya for example). In Kolkata for example, women are very empowered and free. We must take our guest's words as constructive criticism. But sadly, the 'class' of people who actually are very disrespecting of women are also not largely present in the viewership of this channel. But even the educated people sometimes have subconscious biases.
