Maximum Carnage: No Icons Speedrun in ~

Excellent run overall. Had a rough NY Street 2 and Rooftop 2, plus a little bad luck on the last Carnage fight.

Most differences between the two versions of Maximum Carnage are aesthetic. Genesis has different colors, graphics, and a digitized soundtrack compared to SNES. Other notable differences include:
1) Genesis Prospect Park 1 and 2 don’t have bushes in the foreground that partially block your view of the lower end of the screen. However, Genesis Prospect Park 2 does have a big tree in the center of the foreground that blocks your view. This tree is on the leftmost side of the screen in SNES Prospect Park 2. There are also no street lamps in the foreground of Genesis NY Street 1 or 2 like in SNES.
2) Carnage spawns earlier in Genesis Rooftop 2 compared to SNES. In SNES he waits for you to beat Carrion before spawning, provided that you beat the other villains fast enough. He doesn’t wait for you to do so in Genesis.
3) In certain segments of Genesis, enemies may sometimes spawn in groups of 2 when they would have come in groups of 3 in SNES.
4) If you beat Demogoblin before Doppelganger In Genesis Manhattan Street 2, a glitch will cause Doppelganger to turn Green when Carrion appears. Then, Carrion will turn red when Carnage appears. If you beat Carrion before Doppelganger, the latter would also turn red when Carnage appears, but it is not practical to do so in a speedrun.
5) It appears that Doppelganger and Demogoblin have slightly different movements in Genesis. I also believe that Demogoblin has a different hitbox in Genesis, as it's very difficult for me to land punch combinations on him compared to SNES. In my opinion, the boss fight in Genesis Manhattan Street 2 is slightly harder than in SNES as a result of these subtle differences.
6) Genesis has approximately 45 more seconds of cutscenes / loading screens compared to SNES. You cannot skip through loading screens as quickly as you can in SNES.
7) Following Prospect Park 2, If you spam START after the Select Hero menu, it will repeat the menu again.
8) If you spam START following the Manhattan Rooftop cutscene, the game will skip the next cutscene and make you play Manhattan Street 1 as Spider-Man, ruining any speedrun attempts.
Because of 7 and 8, it’s essential that you wait for the cutscenes of Carnage and Venom in the Statue of Liberty to appear before pressing START during a Genesis speedrun.
Time starts when pressing START at the title screen and ends when the screen cuts to black after the last level.

Rented this game when I was like 8. I remember why I never thought of this game much, because I never made it passed the climbing stage. Glad I finally seen it through after 30 some years.

Haven't played this game in a long time. I remember as a kid that I was able to knock Shriek off the edge of the rooftop level (very first rooftop level) when she would come to hit you if you knocked Doppelganger down. I felt very proud of myself for having accomplished it, but was then disappointed when the game softlocked. Because Shriek isn't able to go back to lounging in the background, Doppelganger never stands back up... he just continued to lay there... invulnerable.

Thanks! So far, it's the only time I've managed to pull off all 5 double smashes on the first attempts. Unfortunately, this is an emulated run (OpenEMU), so I can't submit it to the leaderboards. I used Quicktime screen recorder on my Mac desktop and set up a multi-output device to capture the audio. I'm not sure of how to best record original hardware, but perhaps some of the other runners could advise you on that.

Is there anywhere all the icon/continue locations are doccumented? I'm not looking to speedrun but, mainly, there's a secret continue I found as a kid 20+ years ago I've never seen anyone else show or mention in any walkthroughs. After discovering some secret rooms and finding all the crazy hidden hero icons, makes me not surprised it exists. However there would never be any reason to look for it as there's no indication you can even get to it in the first place.

I don't know of any video that includes every icon and continue. This walkthrough contains 6 secret rooms and the Statue of Liberty level. I'm not sure if any other secret rooms exist. - watch?v=BLppiiPIdyI However, in this walkthrough they don't wait the several minutes needed for more items to appear in the Fantastic 4 Lab secret room (with Venom) or the Manhattan Rooftop secret room (with Spider-Man). I just figured with how games get picked apart nowadays that either through datamining or something everything would have been picked apart. I have both the Snes and Genesis copies and I checked last night, there is a secret continue on screen 2 of alleyway. How I found it as a kid, I have no idea but it was before the days of internet when nintendo power or schoolyard rumors were the only methods to find things. As far as the secret rooms, those are much less likely. I've seen the stage 1 rumor but never managed to find anything. I haven't played in a long time but when I game overed on prospect park 2 I had 6 continues. 1 for double bonk bosses (missed on stage 1), 1 for water tower, 2 for alley way and 1 in fantastic 4 hq otherwise I would have had 7 continues. Makes the idea of beating the game really easy as you can stockpile hero icons on park 2. More for a casual walkthrough idea.

Hey dude, first off, impressive !!, I’m 40yo I can’t speed run, those days are far behind me, So I’m not any competition…. However for shits and giggles I’ve been playing this game trying to pop a cherry…. Have you ever hit a 100% fighting accuracy? I’ve been loosely trying for a few days now off and on…. I’m starting to think it simply can’t be done. Have you any thoughts on this matter ? I’d figured it came from not wasting hits….. “not being overtly mashy”…. But at times it seems like my “Accuracy percentage” is raised when I miss a lot of hits !? I hit 89% today… it was what I’d personally consider a perfect game…. But apparently only a B+ according to this cheating ass game…. Also, how are you prolonging your supper hit opportunity !? I tend to get mine right as the last guy dies… and it fades by the time a respawn shows up. 😤 I’ve no idea how I beat this game multiple times as a tike. This is a sorry ass cheater of a game IMO.

Thanks for checking out the video! I don’t think 100% accuracy is possible. I’ve gotten 99% before, I think it was either in the first level or against the Muzzoid boss. I believe taking damage lowers your accuracy (and it does lower your power meter) so you have to land every hit and not get hit once. To save my power hit, I either don’t use any attacking moves or only use attacking moves that don’t activate the power hit, like dashing, backflipping, double smashing, etc. it’s also best to learn the “punch canceling” technique to greatly increase your number of power hits.
