I haven’t read any of the other books you’ve covered on this channel but this? this will be my moment. this series controlled my life and it got my interested in characters with wings forever. Thank you also does anyone remember the scene where the wolf experiment antagonist kid gets angry for a gameboy at macys. for some reason that’s the first thing that comes to mind when I think about the series
@Crowcaller Жыл бұрын
I didn't mention it in the video but yes. boy it happens. POOR ARI. that scene also was burned in my head.

I first got into Maximum Ride when I got one of the books at a Target Just dropped in at the end of a funeral, on the run from evil scientists, problematic dad, and vindictive clones. I was very excited by this style of avant-garde, en-media-res style of storytelling.... until I realized that I'd picked up the 3rd book in a trilogy 💀

I've read the first book, but sadly couldn't get my hands on any of the subsequent ones, since they don't seem to have been translated into Slovak (I was like 12 back then, didn't really speak English and only used internet to play Stardoll). God, I was so sad that I never got to finish that story! Fast forward a decade later, James Tullos released his video on the series and... Hoo boy. It was like mourning a summer love cut short, then almost forgetting them, then reuniting by chance and realizing that they were already mediocre as a teen, but genuinely suck as an adult.
@Crowcaller Жыл бұрын
I haven't seen James' video (yet) but. hm. honestly, I think the first three aren't.... that bad. It just goes so downhill though after that you forget the good bits.

Oh my god I'm so excited!! I was really into Maximum Ride when I was younger- I mean, the premise of a "found family of winged kids" is an instant win in my book- but looking back now, the execution of the story was horrible. A lot of James Patterson's decisions with the plot were... questionable, to say the least. But hey, at least it helped me get over my fear of rollercoasters!
@Crowcaller Жыл бұрын
I have thanks to rereading the series gotten very into 'mutant found family' as a trope again. I also read them as a kid, so it was also extremely foundational for me

I never read the Maximum Ride books, but my best friend and I were obsessed with the graphic novels in middle school, I swear we read through that series at least twenty times each
@somberhoney Жыл бұрын
update: just googled it and apparently it's a manga and not graphic novels? and they only adapted half the series? so I just have no idea what happens in the second half of the books lol
@Crowcaller Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the manga graphic novels are kinda good still. I think the books work better as them, straight up. They did stop making them halfway through adapting book 5 though
@SpecialInterestShow Жыл бұрын
Maximum Ride straight up gave me some weird complex about not being able to watch/read stuff out of order now. I read the 3rd book as a kid not knowing it was a series, then went back and read the 1st and 2nd. I couldn't put together the order of events well and to this day I don't know what happened and when in the series. Idk if it triggered my OCD a few years earlier than I thought or what but I got so confused that I didn't finish the series and now I can't stand watching/reading shit out of order at all. The funny thing is, from what I hear, the books are kinda a confusing mess even when read in order. So, it might not have been me misunderstanding due to order, but rather me not understanding due to the shit just being confusing in the first place
@Crowcaller Жыл бұрын
yeah. max ride doesn't make a lot of sense even in order, but man, it probably was hell that oout of order. it gets.... weird

I hated how it went from the original two and the prequel years earlier into global warming and dumbed down so much the manga is also inaccurate garbage. One of the biggest assassinations of characters in book history. All within a fourth book onward.
@Crowcaller Жыл бұрын
yep. the fourth book though I now think of somehow fondly compared to say. nevermore.
@Topdoggie7 Жыл бұрын
I hope you also address that James Patterson makes other people do all the work and slaps his name on it plus plagiarizes and steals so the decline is also obviously someone he screwed over bouncing. He's also insulted fans of his old series and called them stupid or simpletons who will consume anything: Young Woman's Murder Club.
@Crowcaller Жыл бұрын
I didn't dive too deep into him, but I did mention the fact he 100% uses ghostwriters and constantly has coauthors who are never acknowledged as such anywhere in his books. Max Ride very famously had a co author like the entire time and not once is credited, not even on wikipedia
@Topdoggie7 Жыл бұрын
@@Crowcaller I highly recommend you do a second video on it you can link in any other JP reviews as a sort of handbook to his bullshit. I loved Woman's Murder Club as a kid and when he said he made them knowing stupid people would like them it felt so shitty.
