THIS is what I love about KZbin. Storytelling like Max's will always trump the loud and obnoxious side of KZbin.
@FlightChops5 ай бұрын
Totally. It’s just frustrating that an excellently crafted film like this is reaching such a small part of the community he’s built. KZbin does not reward this sort of content anymore.

This is genuinely some of the most well-crafted piece of documentary I've ever seen in my life. It's engaging in a way that is not an essay, but is a story. The way you can make that story be both factual, expert backed, and very visually creative and entertaining makes people open their eyes to ideas and realities that they're otherwise maybe too bored or not willing to dive into. When you make films, Max, remember that you're fucking good at it and you're actively making people see new ideas. Thanks for putting this up for free, although is a true work of art that is priceless

Max, the bookstore episode was mind-blowing! So much to unpack there, and it's inspired me to keep reading even five years later. You're a master storyteller, and this video is absolutely one of your best. I completely connected with it!

I think happiness is like a carrot at the end of a stick that that someone is holding in front of themselves. It dangles in front of you, just out of reach. You can waste your life running and reaching for as long you care to or you can put down the stick and carrot and look around at what you have. Look behind you and see all that you’ve been running past while you’ve been laser focused on getting the things that will always be just out of reach as long as you chase them. Happiness isn’t a thing to get, a destination to run toward or a status to achieve. It is feeling, a state of mind. This is accessible once you stop, become still, and have gratitude for all that is around you right now. You’ll find that it’s been with you all this time. You just have to give it space, time and attention so it has a place to grow. May ALL beings find peace.

Incredibly sobering to realize that achieving these happiness metrics - in America - means that sure, you won’t be “killing it”, but, worse of all, society will do everything to kill you.

Max never fails to amaze me. He is a wonderful storyteller. At this day and age we need more people like Max to reverse this self distraction culture we have going on. As Joshua luke smith says “this is the main event” , we should relearn to be content and grateful for who we are and what we have.

Super interesting! Though I’m curious to know whether your research included the perspective of people outside of the workforce. For a lot of families, achievement requires a division of labor, where one partner takes on a far greater share of child care tasks. I imagine that people in these roles experience a similar diminishing returns when it comes to time spent nurturing, family and community relationships. Especially when it comes at the expense of professional or individual achievement. I’m thinking in particular of the wife in Germany, who also suffered despite having more time with her children.

Fantastic as expected and learned some new stuff to boot. It’s also really reassuring to hear people who have “made it” struggle just like anyone else. Not that I’m happy they’re struggling, but just that “making it” doesn’t seem like something everyone is capable of doing. So if “making it” were the key to happiness, that would be pretty depressing since only some people would be able to get it.

It is such a valuable topic to discuss when we have been completely brainwashed into believing the wrong things will make us happy.
