She was parasitically against it when people were screaming at her to watch it during Oscar season when everyone was surprised that Mia wasn’t even nominated which Grace responded “to that I just laughed” when she didn’t even see it. Then with the Superman casting months ago, people were screaming at her yet again because she said that she doesn’t know much about David’s acting & doesn’t think he’s too good & people were telling her to watch Pearl where she even said yet again “y’all said he’s good in Pearl but I’m just not gonna watch that movie”. She’s stubborn that way smh 🤦‍♂️

i haven't seen either X or Pearl, but I got the gist of the general story of Maxxxine. They made some references to the past movies, and it did intrigue me more, but I don't think you'd necessarily need to watch them first to understand the basics of this film.

after having watched both X and Pearl. Way overblown trying to tell me i didn't understand Maxxxine cause i didn't see the other two. Like I said in my initial comment, there were references that may have gone over my head, but it didn't detract from the main story, nor was the main story less understandable without having seen X or pearl. As a stand alone film, one can surmise things obviously happened to Max and they do flashback to it plus the *spoiler* she receives early in the film. The film could stand alone in general however, there's enough backstory tidbits for one to watch it to understand Maxxxine's basic premise/story. Since I saw Maxxxine before X, it does kinda spoil X's ending though, lol. It's no different from say...A Quiet Place. Don't gotta watch 1/2 to get 3, and you wouldn't necessarily need to watch 1 to get 2, since 2 gives you a flashback to even before part 1, and you can piece together from there tidbits of part 1.

Grace you should definitely watch the first two. Watch in chronological order and it’s great. Pearl is filmed like a 1950s type movie and X is very much made like a 70s film and Maxxxine is of course an 80s movie.

I’ve not watched any of these films. But if you dug Maxxxine, you probably shoulda checked out X and Pearl prior to this review. There’s bound to be some additional context they add to Maxxxine, which would have added to your commentary. Also, David Corenswet is in Pearl. So that may have added a new dimensions to how you’re feeling about the Superman movie thus far and his casting.

This trilogy was done so well. That you don’t have to watch all of them to understand. Each movie is its own thing and story. They just enhance each other if you do watch them all. Maxxine got a much wider ad campaign so a lot of people likely watched it without seeing the other two. Having watched all three you might appreciate Maxxxine more after watching the first two and how it builds off the themes of them, but a general viewer can get the gist of it and have a good time. It's constructed in a way to not leave them out which is a great point in this movies favor

X pays tribute to 70s grind house type slasher. Pearl is a take on 50s technicolor movies. But it's a gory psychological horror. Pearl is comparable to Hannibal lecter.

Mia Goth is Shelley Duvall's Revenge. Mia Goth is as in control in Horror as Shelly Duvall was abused, bullied, and steamrolled by Kubrick in "The Shining". Grace, if you see "Pearl", you'll see Mia Goth is very intentionally playing Shelly Duvall.

Some of you love to beat down on Duvall, who despite the tenuous working relationship in The Shining, managed to hold her own against Kubrick and put in an all-time horror performance. Please please please please please watch X and Pearl (in that order) they’re both excellent and visually striking. Mia Goth in both is FANTASTIC especially Pearl where her acting abilities REALLY shine, specially the one take monologue🤩 also great acting in X by her and also the others in it (Brittany Snow, Kid Cudi, Jenna Ortega to name a few) AND the fact Goth plays 2 characters in X is wild and she’s so good at both. Manhunter is the first depiction of Hannibal Lector played by Brian Cox and they remade it with Ed Norton and Anthony Hopkins with RED DRAGON so it IS technically in universe but was remade so it is the same vibe and I always loved the High Museum of Art in Atlanta was Lector’s insane asylum. I grew up studying acting across the street at the Alliance Theater and always loved thinking about that movie.

If u are seeing maxxxine, I would highly recommend watching both X & Pearl, bc I think u would appreciate maxxine more. Pearl and Maxine are suppose to be reflections of one another. Pearl also explores film at the beginning when it was becoming an industry.

it is not. I saw Maxxxine at an early screening on Wed. Watched X and Pearl today. Maxxxine works fine as a stand alone film. Are little details about her past lost? Yes. However, one can piece together without having had watch X.\, with the tidbits given in Maxxine.

I think the trilogy is a great arc and , even if you say you don’t need to watch it , I think it enhances Maxxxine so much more as a finale to the X/Pearl trilogy - both narratively but also as a showcase of Ti West’s direction in various periods pieces that deal with notions of fame and the lust for being recognized

Horror films, particularly in the late 70s and early 80s, have had an at least tangential link with pornography, usually on the financial side. Once slashers became the dominant subgenre, pornographers jumped at the chance to get in on it. They could shoot a slasher flick for 100-grand and get it sold to twice as many video stores as their X-rated output.

Theda Bera was also a great in series reference as Theda was the name of the gator in Pearl & X that the antagonist Pearl had as a sort of pet that she fed her victims to.

I'll add to the commentary that you should watch "X" and "Pearl" too! But honestly, while these three films connect to each other very well, especially for some references and payoffs from at least "X" into "MaXXXine", but I really like how all three films can actually stand on their own, as their own movies, not necessarily needing to see each one to completely understand any of them overall!

You must see X and Pearl.. particularly Pearl. Maxxxine works on another level... Pearl was a woman subjected to the misogyny of her time and thus she never escaped the farm and marriage. But Maxxxine, 80 years later, escaped the misogyny of her father and became the single independent star that Pearl and probably many other girls before her wished they could become. Essentially saying women have come a long way.

Both X and Pearl are excellent. I loved Maxine but Pearl is still my favourite from the trilogy. I remember watching Pearl and seeing David Corenswet for the first time and thinking, "Hey! he would make a great superman." He's very Clark Kent in Pearl.

Maxxxine was absolutely brilliant. I have been looking forward to this movie for well over a year now and went in with high hopes which are often met with disappointment. However, this entry was fun, thrilling, gory, scary and entertaining. I loved the follow through of X and Pearl. One of my top movies of the year for sure. Mia Goth and Ti West are a match made in movie heaven.

I think Grace missed two major influences. With the cinematography and shot choices I felt was a mix between 1984's "Savage Streets" and 1975's Dario Argento's "Deep Red".

I really love the look of the film. However we spend too much time with Kevin bacon. He distracts from the main villain hold on the movie. Also knowing Maxine has powerful friends releases a lot of tension on the film.

10 outta 10 …the 80s atmosphere was done to perfection. The homage to the VHS era of horror was masterful as well. The ending will divide people but it was inevitable. To complete the trilogy’s theme

As someone who has seen the first two films, I agree that the third act doesn't totally land. At least for me anyways. But that doesn't mean it's not a good movie, I enjoyed it overall.

2:00 GRACE!!! This will surprise you, but I’m all for the feminist angle in this film. The other two were pretty heavy on that, but it was mixed in with a more believable surrounding for me. Also, never did I think, “Oh shit, here comes the message portion of the movie.” Also, there was no making fun of men really in order to get those points across. The way a show like The Acolyte sets up their world is top to bottom to exclude and undermine men. Again, it was just centered around ambitious women that are doing what they have to do, but the entire time almost overlaying the imaginary version of their life over their real one in real time. Especially this is true for Pearl. I highly recommend you watch them both. X is pretty good, but Pearl was a Mia Goth tour de force. Can’t wait to see this one. Grace, I think that the others had a pretty feminist viewpoint. They were both roughly about a woman wanting more than she has and when people get in her way, well, bad idea.
