What a lovely memory. What a garden to aspire to!..Thanks for showing us around. Just 1 bit of info for you ( if you don't know already )..you can get more plants from your Victoria Cardinalis in spring. When there's new growth, & you notice there are more shoots coming up ( like the plant is spreading ), dig it up & gently separate the new shoots. They all have their own root system. I did this with 2 plants that I had in spring & I've now got about 40 of them dotted around the garden. All the best in your future gardening ventures.
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that info. Just what I want to hear, I don’t have experience with this plant so now I’ll follow your instructions in Spring - I love to tease plants apart if it’s possible.

I am excited about these tropicals - they’re such fun with the fast growth. The brugmansia in the bed I’ll leave there and see if it survives. The two in pots will simply sit in the garage from December. Most of all the others will over-winter in the ground - except the tender red banana which is too much of a faff to take in so I’ll buy another next Spring for £5 - treating it like a bedding plant!!

@paultsworld
@paultsworld 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Catherine, Yes, all the dahlias stay in the ground - as long as the soil is free draining it will be OK. Clay would probably rot them. Second heatwave firmly established here as well. Luckily, like you, I have 6 water butts to help. Must say I’m enjoying an evening ice-cream on the patio right now - lovely evening temperatures. 🌸

Your garden is looking really beautiful, no signs of heat damage. I had an Angel's trumpet on the edge of my pond, it hung over the waterfall, I built it to have a 2 - 3 ft stream as well.. One morning little birds were bathing in the stream and flying up into it to wait for another turn. Mine was white with peachy pink around the trumpet.

Love your garden! I was wondering how old you Oakleaf Hydrangea is, I have one that was planted last fall and has not flowered yet. What is your secret for Oakleaf Hydrangeas?
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 2 жыл бұрын
I have three oakleaf hydrangeas. I bought them as young plants - I think early last year - so this is their 2nd Summer in my garden. I actually treated them all differently. The one in this video was not cut back and it has flowered. The other one I left (in the front garden) has also flowered. However the one I cut back last Autumn has not flowered this year but it’s a much bushier plant. I have no secret but I do like to give them a feed in Spring and plenty of water through the year. I’m still learning about them. If you have a young one I would be confident it is putting down nice roots - hopefully getting bushier and ready to flower for you next year. Hope so - keep me me posted Margarita.

Sorry to hear about your hydrangeas- it has been difficult this year - my mopheads constantly wilt and even one of the paniculatas needed to be put on life-support and 24 hour watch.

I'm amazed to see your Lychnis still blooming! Even though I deadheaded frequently mine were over by the middle of July. Maybe it's the region I live in, Hertfordshire, whereas you're in the north west of England I believe. However, mine have self-seeded as usual and there are plenty of baby plants growing for next year. Lovely garden as usual Paul.

My lychnis are on their last legs now Sue - I wonder if yours started flowering that bit earlier than mine as it may be slower to get the warmer temperatures up here in the NW. It’s brilliant how they self seed - all ready for next year. The ultimate perpetual motion!

Good Morning Paul, amazing. You must have been working on summer interest because the garden is just as magnificent as it is in Spring. Well done. I have to work on that as my garden has finished flowering by mid summer and looks the same mid green. I have just put in echinacea in the last two seasons so should get a really good display. I also want to get my hands on Rudbeckia and canna this year. You have done so much work in the garden and so many new beds that have filled in SO quickly. It must be so surprising to see it almost instantly come together like this. I love that persicaria. NO fertilizer for yarrow, it will take over the world without food!! haha! I really enjoyed your garden tour today as we have a minus 3 morning and am DYING for Spring. PS went to Egeskov and have to say you have done magnificently with summer interest compared to there. We were there in June last time.

Howdy Margaret, how’s life down under? You’re right -mid Summer is tricky. I am also quite taken with echinacea- so are the bees - so a nice swath of them would be great. My cannas are really keeping me entertained this year - I’ve got 6 varieties for goodness sake! Thanks for info on yarrow - I’m useless with this plant 😅 I even have some in the lawn from a previous effort. Bet you’re happy about Spring round the corner. Hope you had a nice time in Denmark.

Denmark was great. We went to the new HC Andersen area in Odense and they have made some really nice urban gardens in the centre there. It was very social with family and friends. Back home, we have had 80mm rain last week and more coming. I hope since I last talked to you in July that you have had rain. Got back and went into a gardening frenzy, pruning roses and moving plants around and doing more winter clean up. Also dug up dahlia tubers but have no idea what I'm doing regarding division. I need to move them to another location. Enjoying the hellebores and daffodils currently. I will watch with great interest your progress reports on the canna and bananas, as well as your new hydrangeas in the front garden. Forgot to mention, is your drone a new toy?

Everything’s looking fabulous in your garden Paul. How do you manage it? Ours looks so parched down here in Hertfordshire. It’s 30 degrees again here today and still no rain. 🥺 I particularly love your hydrangeas. The frost first got ours, then the heat so that the flowers just shrivelled on the mopheads. I’m going to grow paniculatas next year. They’re stronger.

This dry weather is a real problem Ellie - luckily I have 6 water butts and we had a spell a week or two ago of a few days of good rain. My mopheads are the first to wilt and do take more watering - it’s those large beautiful leaves, they do need so much water.
