Hi! Are we allowed to use these videos as tutorials to help make assets for our own scenes?? I'm a student trying to improve a prior scene and was going to try and follow along with this tutorial to update my prior stair asset! Just wanted to check for permission first though!

Amazing work as usual! Out of curiosity would a course for an introduction to 3DS Maya for 3DS Max users be on the cards in the future? I watch most of your videos but personally, I use 3DS Max myself. I would love to be able to learn both programmes but the jump to Maya is daunting. If you were to do a course on this subject I would 110% be buying it day 1!

That's a cool idea. I am currently working on an Intro to 3d modeling class for which I use Maya. That would be for total beginners so not exactly what you are asking. But I might do something like that in the future, though not any time soon

Nice model, but even with the timelapse slowed right down to .25 on YT and the sound muted, it is still too fast to read any of the settings you are putting on it. A voice over would be much better, explaining what settings and modifiers are being used. That being said, liked, subbed and rang the bell. Thanks...

This is awesome, question though. I noticed you are selected a group or individual blocks to edit rather than the whole thing. By chance can you explain how you managed to do that? Because what I got isn't coming out as well and seems to edit the entire thing rather than certain blocks.

I used autogroups for that in order to isolate each piece separately with Ctrl + click on a piece.

really nice. is there a reason why you didnt use Zbrush to retopo the mesh? i feel like Zbrushs retopo is pretty good for objects like this. going back to maya and doing it by hand seems like a drag.

Great videos. I just have one question. Is there no problem in leaving triangles ? Because I've read and seen that you should only use quads.

This would be a game model so triangles are fine. For film or pre-render sequences you want only quads.

ay bud in zbrush how do you hide the polygroups boxes that are beside each other when your sculpting. did you divide all of them into separate sub tools or just the topology. thxs bud

I think it's Ctrl + Shift and click on the polygroup to isolated it and then ctrl + shift drag on the canvas to bring everything back into video

How are you getting the zbrush normal/displacment maps to work on the quad drawn model when you didn't have UV's done til after you sculpted?

The zbrush high poly model doesn't need uvs only the low poly model. I baked the maps with Substance Painter.

Either way is fine as long as you get the topology you want. Sometimes I find Zremesher gives very high poly meshes.

I tried to follow your work but when I tried to bake the highpoly mesh to the lower one, the result came out really bad. Im kinda new to substance, is there any thing I need to prepare in Zbrush before baking the mesh?

Well the low poly was made by using quad draw in maya to retopologize, right? I UV it in maya and then export the FBX file into substance, then bake the zbrush model to it, but it didn't work. I tried to adjust the parameters in the baking option but still, it's just blehhh

Make sure the normals on the low poly mesh have been set up. Easiest way is to go to mesh display - soften/harden edges options box and choose texture borders

this is gonna sound nooby of me but could you quickly explain the purpose for drawing quads over your sculpted version and what it's called? I'm learning maya mostly on my own and I'm struggling to understand certain things, a video link explaining it would be equally as helpful- thanks!! It looks beautiful btw I absolutely love your stylizations

He draws quads over the sculpted rocks because he wants to reduce the number of polygons. Imagine you sculp a face with millions of polygons : you will never be able to render the face with that number of polygons because the software will crash. Or it will take forever to render at best. So you need less polygons. Plus, it helps to get a cleaned UV map. This step is called : retopology. You are going to tell : yes but less polygons means less details. You are right. That's why you have to bake it when you go in Substance Painter. It means your low-poly version takes the shape of your way-too-high poly version. And you can paint over it. As you can see : the blue quads don't have details at all. They are just quads. But they end up taking the detailed shape of the Zbrush version once they are in Substance Painter thanks to the baking step.

That's called retopology, the Sculpted version of the mesh is too dense for a game asset and has bad topology for UV mapping, which is why a low Poly version (mostly quad based) is retopologized over the super high Poly sculpt and all those high frequency details from the high poly are baked into a normal map that the low Poly shall use to fake those surface details in the shader. Check out FlippedNormals videos on retopology here on KZbin, they go into how to do that inside Maya. 👍
