Hey Daryl awesome lecture it really simplified the process for me. I had a question if you are able to help. When I bring in my textures and convert them to ptex files they seem to desaturate and appear really washed out. Do you know how I may be able to fix this? Thanks heaps!

Any reason why when i try to export an archive to be used later as a geometry archive it gives me a python error in 2016, and also why are the archives offseted?

TheIcemanModdeler Hey IceMan, Did you make sure your archive is at the origin and the pivot is set to 0 0 0 and the transforms are frozen to remove any local offset?

daryl obert right that was the problem, i thought Xgen was smart enough to 0 the values and place them correctly on the object, don't get me wrong i like Xgen it's just no very intuitive for getting things done.Why do i have to export archives and not just use an object from the scene directly like many scatter plugins do.I understand i was made by Disney for production and that's the reason it has so many options but for the common user they wil never use many of those features.

TheIcemanModdeler Well.. if it was "smart" enough to zero out the values, then it wouldn't be smart enough to let you bake in an offset, would it? Scatter plugins don't keep your geo procedural the way xgen does. You're complaining over a lack of understanding.

Hi, your tut on xgen & photoshop was a life saver however, I made this lion head i managed to somehow get the shader looking well in the viewport .I prefer using vray ,but due to my very little knowledge i'm using arnold (getting a magenta color) which is a sign of a missing shader.I was wondering if i can send you my file over and u'd tell me or make a tutorial on how to get it working perfectly (preferably with vray) if not arnold should do.Thank you 4 sparing the time 2 read my request.Please leave me your response A.S.A.P. +daryl obert I Went the classic nHair route. Couldnt get xgen to clone nicely along braidguides without strange flattening effects in bends, I suppose that can be fixed with some expression tho! Doesnt matter, nHair is just fine and def easier on the ram...however I am abit scared Autodesk might remove/depracate nHair now? I sure hope they leave the code alone :)

Hi Daryl, Welcome back! I have been trying to create a map, but for some reason in Maya 2016 sp2 OS X 10.10.5 the error I receive is "Part of path doesn't exist", and as such no ptex file is created by maya. I think it appears to be a established issue stopping OS X maya users from using Xgen, as I found this in the AREA forums: forums.autodesk.com/t5/maya-general/xgen-painting-maps/td-p/4799945 Do you know if it is being worked on for a service release? daryl obert What a difference a day makes with some sleep. I took your advice (created a fresh project) and it seems to have worked. Still have no idea why, perhaps it was sleep deprivation on my part. Anyway, thanks again for the reply, as always. Already keen to see the next tutorial you come up with.

GregAffy I did some more testing, and it seems that I can only get it to work if the current project is located on the desktop. If I set or create the project deeper in the computer filing system, (lets say locally in my documents area) then it won't create the ptex file. It seems I wasn't going crazy from lack of sleep. For now I guess its a work around that I have it working if it's on the DT, however mental ray has also been funny with rendering the xgen geo with simple shaders. If I don't have it's plugin loaded before I create the Xgen description, all that renders is the plane and other geo that is not Xgen created, even though the Xgen instances are visible in VP. If this happens, I have to open a new version of maya, make sure the MR plugin is loaded, and then go about setting up Xgen from a project folder on the desktop. I just thought I had better write back again incase someone else runs into the same issue with Maya OS X 2016 Sp2.

OK, This sounds like permissions problem. I have not used OS X but I bet that in a shell you can do a chmod -r 777 on the new project to make all the folders open just like in UNIX. Or maybe do a Get Info on the folder from the GUI to change its permissions.

While using XGen, Im unable to see anything through my renderer. Im using Renderman, and in the output settings, I cannot select renderman. Only Mental Ray or None......does anyone know why this is?

it does support redshift, just gotta go into the collection->Description->pPlate1_description# and add a new redshift mat (the hair shader)
