Thank you for this video. I ordered a replacement drive belt, turned the washing machine on its side and opened up the bottom of the machine. I replaced the belt and thankfully that solved my issue. So grateful. It wasn't spinning at times and had an awful burning smell. Before spending a lot on a repairman or a new transmission I'm glad I got lucky with just replacing the drive belt which cost about $35.00 with shipping. Good luck everyone.

The problem I'm having, is my older, early 90's Amana, would shut down during the rinse cycle, smoke would billow up around the tub and there'd be a burnt smell. The first time it happened, I thought it was the belt and replaced it without even trying it again after it had a chance to cool off. The belt was still in tact, just showing signs of wear. It was fine for a while, but a few months ago, it started shutting down about the 3rd load. Again during the rinse cycle. Now it does it sometimes during the wash cycle on every load. I can shut it off after it fills up, let it sit an hour, then start it and it runs through all the cycles with no problem. i do hear a noise sometimes, bearings? maybe! Would the bearings get hot and cause this? If it's a part that costs more than it's worth, I'd rather replace the washer, but if it's a cheap fix.........

Thank you! I'm having some issues with my toploader... I get a burning smell, it'll drain, it'll spin (albeit unhappily), but there's gunk that has ended up in the drum? Is this similar to the issue the video is showing?

Ok so mine is doing the burning smell, but NOT the loud noise. It stops running and you hear a VERY LOW hum sound. Then the power just cuts off all together. And I have to keep hitting the reset button until it starts back. It's very inconvenient because it doesn't do this every time. So washing my clothes is like playing Russian roulette. And when it does do the mess up, it will literally not spin my clothes out good. So they come out dripping wet. Which means they don't dry good. I have a stackable Frigidaire. Does anyone have a link to fix whatever this is?

@sincladutch
@sincladutch 11 жыл бұрын
The problem was most likely a bad thrust bearing, that would explain the motor overheating. When the transmissions on these washers go it NEVER adds strain to the motor because if it was the transmission the problem would have been a bad clutch spring meaning that it simply would have snapped off, still allowing the pulley to spin freely. So what your repairman did here was run the washer until the transmission heated up and melted gears cause it needed a pulley kit...not such an expert now huh!

You see, when the thrust bearing goes on these washers the brake does not release and the tub will not move, exactly what im seeing here (the drum struggling to spin up to speed because the brake was not releasing due to the bad thrust bearing kit. So the burning smell originated from the belt burning BUT because the brake would not release, although the transmission splines still would have been moving, which is why i come up with the theory that he ruined the transmission by doing this.

Rule number one-DONT use the customer's appliance as a tool bench. Always put down a pad or a blanket if you are going to set tools on someone's appliance. I've been in the business for 20yrs, I'm shocked someone would put out a video with this type of repair etiquette
