Don't know why i watched this, i changed my oil on my mazda literally yesterday, but good explaining definitely broke it down well and had some good tips.:)

I figured out a way to change the filter without removing the bottom shield, The jerks I let change my oil last time just cut a big hole in the shield under the filter. I wish I would have cought it sooner, I'd make them buy me a new one, I don't even remember which place I used. I didn't even notice it till I was putting it back on. I also had to use my really long 1/2" drive ratchet to get the drain plug out, jerks used an impact gun on an oil pan. Thanks for your pointers.

Hey thanks for this video. Just changed the oil in my Mazda 3 and made 1 mistake. For some reason after watching the video, I got it backwards on the pan. Yes, I accidentally changed the transmission fluid. Fortunately, I was able to find a compatible fluid (Castrol Transmax Full Synthetic Multi Vehicle) and all is well. Seriously appreciate the video.

Thanks for the details about the splash shield. Firestone did an oil change service and it appears they left the back end bolts loose on the splash shield. About three weeks after the oil change, the loose bolts eventually dropped and the splash shield began to drag... Anyway, thanks for your video.

Thanks for video excellent.Just Thinking with out a garage lift,The ordinary Joe cannot lift the car in the air,to remove the splash shield.Then Mazda made sure no small hatches in place to allow access to drain nut,and another for filter.It would make it so much easier for the car owner as in the past.One is forced to go to the Garage .just saying not your fault good video.

You mention the under shield in the other video. Do mechanics routinely take short cuts like not putting such things back in place? Because the hardware for my under shield is gone. As in, the shield was half ass attached with zip ties. I only needed to remove one bolt and the weld was busted just like you said.

@stephenelkins80459 жыл бұрын
An update to my earlier comment. Challenging. The biggest difficulty was removing the shield. The left and right front clip can not be salvaged. They are plastic plug clips. The video claims that they are not needed once they are removed. He is correct, as you will be unable to reuse them. I had to cut through them to remove the shield. When tightening the oil filter be sure to not over tighten. You will know this if your oil filter O ring binds, and becomes a loop whereby you can put a finger in the loop. Hand tighten, and just a smidgen more. If you over tighten and you see the O ring loop outward, just restart the whole process. I saved at least 40 dollars doing this myself, and I had a chance to do a thorough inspection under my car. Good luck, and as Rob Schneider would say, "YOU CAN DO IT!
@r.nathansinclair99097 жыл бұрын
Well done. Question: why change the filter first? Is it less messy that way and does any of the dirty oil contaminate the new filter? Or would draining the oil first be better? Thanks for the great insight. 😃

i awlays drain, then pull filter, replace filter, then fill... but maybe not necessary on this model.

Every video I've seen about the 2.3 oil canister has the thing gushing oil all over once it's taken off. Would it be alright to remove the Allen head bolt first and let the housing drain before unscrewing the whole assembly?In your opinion are Mazdas more difficult to work on than other Asian cars? Thanks for a great video!
@auggiebendoggy8 жыл бұрын
+Lew James I recommend simply unscrewing the oil canister until a small flow begins and drains into the pan. Let it sit a while until you can begin unscrewing it a bit more. After 2-3 times of repeating this, you should be able to unscrew it. However, hold it upside down else the oil IN the filter will gush out. Hold it upside down and pour the oil into a pan.

I have a 2008 Mazda 3 with the z6 1600cc engine. When ever I get up on a morning and start the car for maybe 5 seconds the idle on the car sounds low he the engine sounds rattle like if the car wants to stall but it doesn't. after that 5 seconds the car works perfect

I had that problem with one of my older Jettas. Turned out to be a cold start valve. It's a bit like a choke, shoots extra gas into the engine so it can start when it's cold. Might be something to look into.

My used Mazda does not have a undercarriage shield. I just discovered this when I went to go change the oil. What bad things can happen from not having the shield(s)?
@WhitneyAutomotive9 жыл бұрын
+Lew James With the bottom shield missing your car is subject to damage from small road debris but more importantly, airflow is changed. Cooling these cars properly is important! Additionally, the two side shield pieces may break off or make noise while driving, if they haven't already.

scary that the owner neglected to check the oil level... nephew did the same and blew up the engine! 2:55 great pointer for the oil drain plug gasket, but if you're a novice, you want to properly crush that new aluminum washer/seal to avoid leaks 23-30 ft lbs. sooo ~25 would be ok. PS, you don't need to goto the stealership for that aluminum gasket; any aftermarket with similar 14mm size can be OK www.mazda3tech.com/engine_oil_replacement_mzr_2_0_mzr_2_5_-1383.html only other thing i would do is to check the underbody for possible leaks at the filter/ drain plug (as a precaution to putting the splash shield back on). Heck, nephew's splash shield is missing so is it really needed?
