The money you spent on the car plus MOT work is still less than most people drop on a couple of months' lease payments. And they won't even own the damn thing after three years! I think it's us 'banger' fans who have the last laugh here. Plus we get to smoke around in cool old cars that, because they were once everywhere but are now mostly gone (wasteful society that we are), invoke far more affection, nostalgia and affection in people than yet another grey £40k Audi or BMW on credit. Oh, and screw the haters; they're the scourge of the internet and social media and I wish they'd all just slink back under their stones and bridges, and leave the rest of us in peace to enjoy things. Ridiculous that people think they have the right to tell a stranger what to do with their cars, time and money, band then get bent out of shape when you don't 😡 Glad you've decided to properly sort and save this one. Worth doing with any solid classic, IMO, as values are only going to go one way, and buying new cars is nowhere near as environmentally sound as keeping the old ones running (remember: reduce, reuse, and only *then* recycle!) That sunroof would drive me nuts though, especially if i lived in Wales, and will eventually turn your interior mouldy, and rot your footwells out from inside. With the 240s (which admittedly have a steel tilt & slide rather than what the Americans call a 'moon roof') the drain channels are usually the culprit. I hope it's an easy fix.

Hello Mr. Hubnut, when you get a chance to investigate the idling problem, be sure to ensure that all vacuum hoses are attached. Once after removing my air box on my Mazda MX6, I found that my idle was higher and found that to be the culprit. If you haven't already, I would also consider replacing that worn out hose from the air box to the throttle body for the same reason.

If there is a lesson to be learned it is "know your limits". I replaced the front discs on my Octavia 4x4 and indeed snapped my tommy bar at the joint undoing the caliper bolts, but got there in the end and the job was quite straightforward. Not so the rear discs where access is impossible unless you have a vehicle lift, then with the tight caliper bolts it was a non starter for DIY.....so off it went to the garage for them. You played this one right without a shadow of doubt.

When you come to investigate the high idle don't adjust any screws without first bridging pins TEN and GND together on the diagnostics port. If you don't bridge them the ecu will try to compensate for differing air flow and make matters a lot worse.

From a distance that Mazda looks okay in the opening sequence. I like the colour but not the body damage! I'm slightly surprised the car has been as good as it has been, which is a testament to Mazda and not the previous owner, who I think has neglected it in no uncertain terms, the body damage and perished air intake bellows that stopped you driving home being prime examples. If you are going to fix the sunroof properly that's fine, if at some point it does come to bodging it if there's no other choice I recommend a product called CT-1, which I'm told can even be applied under water. I've been given a tube at work and it does take a while to go off, but I used it to seal a crack in the washer bottle on my car and once its gone off, boy does it stick!

You did the right thing Captain HubNut. The real Hub Nut would have been the start of your real problems made worse for not having any suitable heat source, nor a resourceful toolbox plus the confidence of experience. Then after all the blood sweat and tears without an air compressor and a gaiter expander specialised tool its unlikely you'd have replaced the CV boot anyway. It all would have been beyond a nightmare for you. For a few hundred quid you've walked away with an MoT'd car and your sanity which is the best possible outcome. Well done you. Your leaking sunroof reminds me of a Peugeot 106 I had for eight years with the same problem and just as bad. I ended up keeping a couple of towels to sit on in the drivers seat for those really bad days. For the life of me with hindesight I can't understand why I never fixed it !

Yes, probably blocked drain holes in the sunroof. A good first attempt tip is to get a length of flexible curtain wire (the type with the metal spiral under it's plastic outer cover) and see if that'll fit down them. Vigorous prodding with this may clear it.

IMO it's worth supporting your local garage if you have a good one. I live in a village and it's really handy to have a garage you can walk to and from. I give mine work and in return they give me advice and even on occasion have lent specialist tools. They charge less than half of a dealer. That Mazda seems a fair buy. You've got a car with 12 months MOT that has done a long drive without breaking down for under £500. Most drivers think that is impossible to do such is the power of advertising and "Conventional wisdom"

Sitting watching this drinking tea from my black TWC mug which arrived today. Many thanks for that Ian, very prompt dispatch and delivery. Mazda hub nuts do seem to have biblically high torque settings, I remember having real struggles with the rear one on my old B-reg 626 when I had to replace the rear trailing arm assembly after the wheel bearing welded itself to the stub axle. Bending a 4 foot scaffold pole is pretty impressively tight. My go to breaker is a 6 foot length of old gas pipe. I've never managed to bend that YET but I've certainly banana-ed a fair few breaker bars with it...

Glad you netioned the drain tubes...I'd guess they're not blocked, but that's it's simply the inner seal that's failed. The drain tubes (for those that don't know) could/should be tucked away behind the rear light clusters, attaching to an opening in the rear wheel wells for drainage of the excess water from inside the body cavities. If they're not attached properly or are blocked etc...you can get water down into your spare wheel well and it rots out.....not good...i've seen it happen. :)

The Mazda is a perfect follow on from the Skoda, showing perfectly the difference between the old tech and a new generation of cars, Id like to see a side by side comparison, features, cost and so on. On some levels they cover the sme bases, yet in many ways are poles apart.
