The Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5 have the distinct honor of being our previous Utility Vehicle of the Year winners, but as the years go by and the new models are considered old, they lose a bit of their luster. But they’re invaluable tools when measuring the progress of other new vehicles today. We brought out the former winners to compare to the new and improved Subaru Forester, to see just how good the crossover market is, and whether the newest model is the best.

That was a 2018 CX-5, not the updated 2019 with Apple CarPlay. This was most evident because the available Turbo wasn’t mentioned and the alloy rims are from last year.

The Apple car play and Android auto not being mentioned is the most obvious tell. They could not have mentioned the turbo because they wanted to keep it in same engine class.

The annoying thing about autoguide (and virtually every other car review) is the amount of time they spend hating a car for it's 'boring' driving dynamics. These are CUVs and no one is going to take them drifting or speeding down suburban areas. My Volvo V50 isn't sporty but it gets me where I need to be and it drives fine. Not EVERYONE needs a car with sports car DNA, just chill out.

True, and that's why the CRV is the best. It's the most practical because it has the most interior room, the MPGs are equal to the Forrester yet much faster, it has carplay and android auto, has all the advanced safety features, and actually out-performs the gorgeous and sporty Mazda in acceleration, braking and slalom. You'd have to spend thousands more on the new turbo CX5 to gain 1 sec faster 0-60. www.motortrend.com/cars/honda/cr-v/2017/2017-honda-cr-v-vs-2017-mazda-cx-5-comparison-review/

I was getting the bumpers repainted, front from too many bug splatter damage and rear from scratches. I don’t like 4 cylinder vehicles especially when you load them with adults and luggage and a/c on, they feel like the engine is straining also add to it that vehicles weigh too much for 1.5L. I saw a Ford Escape with a .7L must be the size if a shoe box 😂. I’m very pleased with power, acceleration and gas mileage I get with my V6 daily driver and I get a silly smile when we tow our camper with our 5.7L Tundra.

@@Joe-cu4hi, I guess it comes down to use... my choice would be the CRV because it has more of what I want. Namely safety and gas mileage. They only weigh 3500 lbs and the computer has the torque settings for off the line quickness and about town lane changing. Also, that cargo capacity is impressive. They also look very comfortable for a tall person. Would absolutely love that Tundra you have. Maybe one day when they are fully electric.

That was not a 2019 Mazda CX-5. Probably a 2018. CarPlay & Android Auto come standard on every trim level except Sport, and the Sport doesn't offer leather. Also, if it were a 2019, then why not the 2.5 SkyActive Turbo for this comparison? Former trained ambulance driver here... I've been driving the 2020 Forester sport for almost a year now as a rideshare driver in New England. I can say without a doubt the guy driving the Forester at minute 6:33 is dead wrong about the steering and/or any other driving related aspect of the Forester. As a trained professional driver, there is not a single situation I have put the car into that it has not been able to handle with utmost confidence. To be honest my only complaint with the 2020 is the auto high beams turn off for roadside reflectors and streetlights(sometimes making it look like you're flashing the lights), and the front seats lack serious comfortability (long drives kinda leave me with sciatica)... I'm 6ft tall and the bottom of the seat only comes about three-quarters of the way to my knee(so either a longer seat bottom or sliding extension). the padding of that seat could also use about three hundred more dollars worth of padding; come on memory foam 😂! and if you drive the car with a modicum of sense you can get 30 mpg combined which I %99 of the time get as long as I don't forget I have it in sport# mode 🤣😂

They left out the fact that the Forester symmetrical all wheel drive is the best and standard. That is an important consideration for those of use in snow country.

Edmund's longterm CX-5 driven in California has an underlying theme that it is slow. It maybe faster than a Prius but it is still slow. "I got ready to pull back into traffic, traffic that was scooting along somewhere around 50 miles per hour. Although the CX-5 managed to get me up to flow-of-traffic speed, it didn't seem the least bit happy about it. The sluggish response to me laying into the gas was more than surprising - it was disappointing. The CX-5 is fantastic in many respects. But getting up to highway speed quickly isn't one of them." "...several of us are already disappointed in the CX-5's somewhat toothless acceleration and general non-zoominess, we're all furiously plastering the accelerator to the floor in an attempt to coerce any life out of this powertrain. That's not going to help our fuel economy." "The CX-5's non-turbocharged four-cylinder has to work hard to keep up with traffic, and it doesn't have much left when you pull out to pass on the highway. Adding that turbo engine would make the CX-5 'feel alive' in a way that it doesn't now." "push the CX-5 at all or try an aggressive lane change, the lack of power is very noticeable. The engine growls loudly, but the CX-5 does not move to match the sound. Also in terms of fuel economy, I was averaging just over 20 mpg, which falls short of the EPA ratings. Compared to the fuel economy you can get in the Honda CR-V, which feels larger and more powerful, the Mazda CX-5 doesn't compare."

Reliability wise, the CR-V will outlast the two.
@jeffruebens8355
@jeffruebens8355 5 жыл бұрын
The newest CR-V with a turbo engine has reliability problems, including fuel getting in the engine oil. The Mazda 6 and CX-5 got the highest reliability rating in the April 2019 Consumer Reports magazine, also the Subaru Crosstrek and Ascent (even though there is very little info for the Ascent). I drove these 3 and liked the Mazda CX-5 the best for looks and how it drives. I can live with the smaller luggage area and other problems. We have a 2013 CX-5 with 70,000 miles- it only needed a new shifter for the automatic transmission, so far, that was redesigned for newer years.
@emmanuels.3003
@emmanuels.3003 5 жыл бұрын
@@jeffruebens8355 I believe you, for now. In the long term, the CX5 and Crosstek will soon encounter serious transmission and engine problems. Both cars have JATCO made transmissions, one of the most problematic in the world and boxer engines of Subaru are known for blowing their head gaskets less than 100,000 miles. Listen to a mechanic with 50 yrs of experience named Scotty Kilmer on KZbin.

If it wasn’t for the oil dilution issues Honda CRV definitely wins. But in the real world, Toyota RAV4 wins. Blind spot monitor standard across the board not just top trims, and no super complex turbos etc. Just auto trans and natural engine. Plus, LED lighting is standard on all trims.

Overall pretty good comparison review. But he forgot to mention that Subaru Forester's biggest advantage over others is its insane off-road capability. It can go places (snow, mud...minus serious rock crawling) that these two others would be dead stuck. It's what really separates Forester from many other in this category.
