Another good video, so thanks. I was weighing up between a Mazda CX60 and the Lexus RX. I know the comparison should really be with the NX but I was looking at the RX mainly. The CX60 came out on top - it's more fun to drive, and the design is cleaner, easier on the eye and more to my liking. It also saved me quite a bit of $, as well as aligned my ego problem by foregoing brand recognition (brand snobbery?).

David, what are your thoughts on how Mazda lines up the front fenders to the A-Pillar? Floating gap design vs a tight, butted-up joint. It's obvious that the Mazdas are all built very consistently, all the gaps seem so perfect, but I always felt like where the fender meets the a-pillar is a bit awkward, as if this is the place where they've allowed for some tolerance in order to make everything else line up. Or perhaps just designed that way for ease of assembly.. Would be interested to compare different design thoughts/strategies from a design/manufacturing POV.
@marshalljames5640 Жыл бұрын
I actually think it’s a design feature and very Intentional to keep the line horizontal instead of introducing another direction (like most fender-A pillars) in a spot where a lot of visual direction happening.

If I pause it at 6:03 and compare them, I prefer the more taut and sharp look of the Mazda. Looks more premium.

@@marshalljames5640 I def agree it looks better from front/side view. What you see when you get into the vehicle though is a 1/2"-5/8" gap between the A pillar and the fender. I was wondering if this gap somehow allows them to made the hood and front door gaps perfect (which I think are much more important to get right).

Things I wish my GX460 had that it doesn't: -Roll down rear window. The final version of the 460 has the wiper off the glass entirely and there is no spare on the back so a roll down window would have been a nice touch. -Auto lights when wipers turn on. This really bugs me, I know I have day time lights all the time, but the rear lights are not part of the daytime lights, and often in rain, the auto lights do not turn on. This is a no-brainer feature that should have been added a long time ago. - A better backup camera! Honestly, I feel like I'm watching a 240p video on youtube in 2006 when I look at the backup camera. Should have been HD full screen. -Note about wired car play. I have had wireless car play before and for cars that are shared by multiple people, wireless car play is annoying because the car doesn't know who is driving or who's phone to connect to. For this wired makes perfect sense, and I am happy with the solution. I did add a magnetic phone mount in the useless CD slot. -The radio is pointless, they should have just removed this and made the screen bigger. -Note about interior. Not a huge fan of the suede that popular now in a lot of cars. Cleaning is hard, and the finish can become very ugly fast. Especially with kids, the finish in the GX is really going to last much longer than the "newer" more expensive looking suede finish.

I own a 2016 Highlander Limited … it’s been a very good, if a bit boring, vehicle. Just test drove a 50K Grand Highlander with several thousand dollar “market adjustment.” It couldn’t be more devoid of character … it is the definition of an appliance. The cabin materials are cheap, buttons and switches feel janky. It’s pokey and uninspiring in every way. The new GH feels like a step backward in fit, finish and quality compared to my 8 year old car. So Toyota dealers are brazenly ripping people off, especially on the hybrids, and for the money their cars are fair to middling at best. Will they run a long time? Probably. Will you want to drive it a long time? Doubtful. I’m absolutely going to give the CX 90 a test and see what it’s all about. Ive heard some concerns from mechanics and other engineers of future maintenance. Sounds like the motor has to nearly be removed for many fixes. Might be a non-issue, but only time will tell.

We aren't quantitative beings... The point of this is qualitative. How loud are they inside?

At $50k+ I will prefer to put 10k additional and get the Lexus, or get a certified preowned for the same price.... also the sheet metal in mazda is so thin that gets dinged easily, ot the case with the Lexus or Toyota

Ok - what exactly is the thickness of the sheet metal on the Mazda CX90 panels? What is the thickness of the sheet metal on the GX460 panels?

I'll keep my 2023 GX

I used to love my older GX460. Since Lexus jumped the shark and decided to force the 3rd row option I ended up buying a 4Runner. The 3rd row option takes up too much vertical space in the cargo area. Dumbest thing I've ever seen. Unnecessary and unusable 3rd row in a small SUV.

Mazda is probably the best you can get for city driving, this is clear enough. The GX460 is on a whole different level. This is comparing consumer grade to commercial grade. The GX460 used in a city driving environment will last forever!! The CX-90 used off-road will fall apart in a week! Both are good for what they have been designed, but the GX460 has the advantage because it will outperform in a less demanding environment since it was designed for harder use. This is why off-road trucks have a high value.
