10 years later and this video is still a fucking godsend. I’ve had problems with my protege5 for a while now, saw this video and said “ain’t no fucking way” saw my air intake was hanging on by a thread of rubber, swapped it in the o reilys parking lot and now we’re back to a perfectly running car. Thank you man. ♥️

Idle issues with these lovely Pr5's the issue usually lies with the Mass, IAC Valve, and the throttle bottle needing cleaning, and try BEFORE buying any replacement parts. Spray cleaners come as a package deal for under ten bucks! (at Walmart).
@boughtamiata3 жыл бұрын
Sure, definitely don't guess and buy stuff randomly! But it's free to inspect the tube and the tears are obvious. Otherwise, you just did the same and bought cleaner you didn't need. I joke, but you fancy-pants P5 owners are usually putting oiled, aftermarket filters as performance upgrades. That's where the crud gets in, typically from over-oiled filters. I did the same with my other car till I learned to wait and watch the oil soak in the filter before I added more. Light pink is fine and rotate it so the oil can wick through. The other way to get crud in your TB is the valve cover vent hose. But that is after the MAF - so on my stock automatic Protege, it just gets the restrictive paper filters and the MAF is fine. I'm happy to hear yours is still running too!

Could also happen if you have the misfire cylinder three error. Fix by just getting new coils for your sparkplugs. Might as well swap plugs too

On my 1997 mazda protege manual, the idle is surging after i took the throttle body apart and cleaned, also took the iac valve off and cleaned. It didnt surge this hard or bad before i cleaned tb. Do you think maybe i cracked the intake tube? Was your idle surging at all?
@boughtamiata Жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply. Maybe... it's easy enough to check. Remove the tube and rotate. If it's torn, it'll be obvious between the ribs. Or try putting a little water in the tube (when removed from the car) and check for leaks. Idle problem could also be from just working the TB itself, but I find that pretty uncommon.

I have the same car change that hose 6 month ago. change the MAF sensor. about 2 weeks ago when start the motor in cold the car hesitate and then idle rough till turn off himself. i need to start the car about two more times to eliminate the problem. Then when the car is running don't hesitate no more till i shut off the car and cold. When i start the car again it repeat the problem. Any advise. Thanks
@boughtamiata Жыл бұрын
Hi Fabio, will the car stay on if you give it a little throttle? It sounds like you might have a few other air (vacuum) leaks. In my experience when it gets better after it gets warm, it means there's a tiny rip or crack in some rubber hose. When everything warms up, the rubber heats up, expands, and seals the the crack. But over time, the hose is just gonna get older and continue to deteriorate. Closely inspect all hoses leading into the engine, especially to whatever they're connected to. Another option is to spray very soapy dishwater from a spray bottle on hoses to seal up any cracks for a moment. It's gonna evaporate fast so leave it pretty drippy. The soap just helps it stick. If your cold idle improves, then you know you have a leak. You'll have t0 troubleshoot each hose one by one after that.

Another option could be incorrect fuel on cold startup. Usually due to a bad coolant sensor but those don't fail often. The front O2 sensor also controls tells the ECU how.much fuel to supply, but you will typically get a check engine light telling you so.

@boughtamiata Thanks for the technical advice. Before this problem the car start to get hot and quickly I change the thermostat, the 2 radiator hoses, get the radiator to get clean, put new coolant and chabge the coolant sensor too then the new problem start and I change the mass air flow sensor and check the rubber hose that get from the MAF sensor to the throttle that is practically new because I change it about 4 to 6 month ago. I'm also clean the pcv valve to. I take out the rubber hose that go to the throttle to inspect it and is in great condition.

OEM or aftermarket ..which one would you recommend for replacement?..thanks.
@boughtamiata2 жыл бұрын
I've used both. I prefer OEM, but they both worked fine. OEM has that feel of solid plastic. The aftermarket had this soft rubbery feel. It was fine - maybe it'll last longer since it's not hard plastic? I just wasn't used to it, I guess... highly depends on where you get that from.

Hey can you tell me where the starter motor is? Is it under the battery? I have a 97 with only 113,000 and it's immaculate,but my faithful left me stranded tonight and I was told by many people it was the starter. Any light you could shed would be greatly appreciated!

Where can I locate the coolant temperature sensor on this engine !!!!!
@boughtamiata2 жыл бұрын
If you follow the top radiator barb, the hose makes an "S" path. The first sensor in that path is a temp sensor. Basically, at the "back" of the head, just to the right of the oil cap, and about 6-8" down the block. Warning, Idk a lot about this one... Some sensors separately control the ECU/fan, and the dash gauge separately. You'll have to research. It's not common for OEM Temp sensors to fail. But if it does, it'll mess with your fueling and timing. Just enough to make driving feel a little off.
@00P1UM52 жыл бұрын
@@boughtamiata so I just got my coolant temperature sensor replaced because recently my radiator cap as been steaming up with a sweet smell of coolant the mechanic said I have to change the radiator cap and radiator should I do the cap first because the cap doesn’t feel firm it’s dangly when it’s shaked a little
@boughtamiata2 жыл бұрын
@@00P1UM5 I would try the radiator cap first, get a good name brand, either OEM or Stant. Sometimes it just won't hold pressure anymore, and it's only a few dollars. If you still smell, it might be the radiator as your mechanic says. But swapping the coolant sensor won't do much. Check out my latest video if you need to swap you rad. The OEM usually cracks right along the top where the aluminum and plastic meet. It's not hard to swap.
