Sohn or not, I wouldn't go full synthetic with a rotary. The benefits of a sohn: you get less carbon deposits (fresh oil burns off cleaner than dirty oil), more oil capacity, and better seal lubrication (clean oil lubricates seals better than dirty crankcase oil). "Synthetic oils are not suitable for rotaries. OMP or not, premix or not, they don’t have the ZDDP (Zinc Dialkyde) necessary for rotary engines. The additives they contain are simply not enough. Furthermore, when synthetic oils reach high temperatures, they varnish and create deposits in the motor, damaging the bushings and internal rubber joints. There is no advantage in using a more expensive oil that has no advantages. It is necessary to do your oil changes at the same interval, between 3000kms to 4000kms maximum. For example, Brad Penn oil (mineral with synthetic additives) It is less expensive and has all the characteristics needed for rotary engines. The advantages are obvious, as your motor will start better, run better and smoother." ( Source: Derwinperformance.com/articles/all-oils-are-not-created-equal/ )

After I started watching your videos, I seriously considered buying a RX-8. It is great to aquire the skill to maintain and eventually rebuild a rotary, they are relatively cheap, and they sound amazing. But at the end of the day the NC MX-5 has the same great chassis, a very reliable engine with sensible fuel consumption and better tuning potential than the Renesis. Also a hardtop turns the NC into a nice looking coupe. Of course you have to be secure enough to get passed the hairdresser jokes :)
@alexflores50202 жыл бұрын
Miata chassis are conventional rail chassis the NC was a half and half derived from the bottom end of the RX-8 mixed in with older Miata style conventional rail chassis. The RX-8 has a full cockpit type full unibody. It is literally ONE of the only chassis of its type that existed at the time when the RX-8 was created and its the same as what's used in HYPERCARS these days. The RX-8’s entire front suspension is held on by the end section of the unibody. It literally has no front structural subframe. And the rear of the RX-8 is a full 5 point multilink meaning that its not just two suspension arms and a few other bars linking the suspension like conventional rear multilink suspensions used in other cars. I mean the RX-8 has 5 entirely different individual bars and arms with bushings holding the rear hub/knuckle assembly as well as the shock and spring. That 5 point multilink suspension it has at the rear is one of the most reliable ways to run a cone type Torsen diff (RX-8 has a special diff that is not just a torsen spring but it also has cones that act as a taper so that the diff has torque vectoring by design. Other cars don’t have this. Definitely not any Miata, not even an ND.) This LSD diff design requires a proper 5 point rear suspension to even work because of the way a true Torsen diff needs to keep load on both rear wheels at all times in order for it to work. For anyone to claim a Miata is the same chassis is a joke. The only thing that the NC and RX-8 have in common and are interchangeable is the steering rack and some of the suspension parts that serve as upgrades for the NC but that's it. The RX8 chassis is different to any of the Miata chassis (NC or otherwise). Ridiculous levels of bullshit going on with people claiming the NC is a short wheelbase RX-8 chassis.

Man, your DIY videos are amazing! Just 1 problem I have w/ the Sohn Adapter. The problem is, it's still actuated and controlled by the OMP. This means, that it only does its job when the OMP pumps oil into the combustion chamber. This also means, that it only lubricates at the RPM that the OMP opens up. Premixing on the other hand, ensures that you have oil at all RPM and functions independently of the OMP. This adapter is good because, like you said, now you have fresh 2-stroke oil in the combustion chamber. Although, switching to synthetic oil, it will still burn like synthetic oil when the OMP pumps it in. Keep up the good work! Can't wait to see what you have next on the to-do list :D
@Drivenbymadness7 жыл бұрын
That's true. If the S1 rx8 would have a 3rd oil injector, like the S2, this would be ok, but if it was electronically regulated to add oil troughout the whole rpm range, but in different quantities, this would be poerfect. Don't forget you need an oil tank to feed the Sohn adapter. This is NOT included, so you have to source it yourself. The one in the video can be bought of Ebay as a complete kit, I have the very same one too. But, with some handywork, you can DIY a tank yourself. I've seen gastanks of mopeds and scooters being used. But, for the low price and ease of installation, I highly recommend the hassle free Ebay solution. You can even get the backplate in fancy colors, if you so chose. There won't be a hole for the headlight spray thingies, but I'm sure you can drill a hole yourself and with a grommet, mod the reservoir so that it still works.

Nice, welcome to the club! Just one thing, I don't know how much of this is true, but I heard synthetic oil could potentially damage the rubber O rings on the rotors. Having said that, I've been running semi synthetic Castrol Magnatec since and haven't encountered any problems.
@thefury74107 жыл бұрын
Is it really safe? How long have you been using it? Because I'm afraid it might cause problem in the long run. I've been running Idemitsu 10W-30 mineral oil. I avoid running full synthetic, but I heard that Royal Purple Synthetics could be run on rotaries safely, but it hasn't convinced me yet.
@Flyingdutchy337 жыл бұрын
I've had my Sohn adapter installed for about 30k kilometers now. Zero issues so far. As far as engine oil goes, I wouldn't really know what to recommend. but I will say this: The specified oil by mazda is too thin. They did this in order to get ever so slightly better mileage at the expense of the engine. I run 10w40 myself.
@thefury74107 жыл бұрын
I haven't got a Sohn Adapter yet, the OMP still inject 4T 10W-30 oil. This is the main reason why I still avoid synthetics, if I'm not mistaken you could run synthetics after you install the Sohn adapter as the engine will inject 2T oil instead of used 4T oil.
@Flyingdutchy337 жыл бұрын
That is entirely correct. However, the main reason to go to full premix OR the Sohn adapter is basically that your omp wont inject filthy black oil from the sump into your combustion chambers. Even if you just changed your engine oil, there is still a lot of filthy oil in the oil coolers & lines. Hence you never really have fully clean oil, not even after an oil change. Over time, this oil becomes absolutely filthy, making your omp eat ever more filthy oil. Imo that's the main reason to switch over. Ofcourse 2stroke burns "cleaner" so you should theoretically have less carbon deposits too. However, even with a Sohn adapter or full premix, you will still need to change your oil every 5-7k kms. I do mine religiously every 5k, and put in a new filter with every single oil change.
@thefury74107 жыл бұрын
That's cool. By the way I've had this question for a long time, should I switch to synthetic (or synthetic blend) with my OMP on? The debate for oil in the RX-8 is too intense to be honest.... Some say not to run synthetics (I'm one of them), even some builders like Essex Rotary don't recommend it. However some say it's fine and even better to run rotaries with synthetics (I'd assume full synthetic), Black Halo Racing says so (in general), Racing Beat too (they tested Royal Purple).
@adammiller5136 Жыл бұрын
I don't recommend using synthetic. Rotary engines are not designed for synthetic. Use a petroleum-based oil in both crankcase and Sohn oil reservoirs. I recommend using an engine oil that meets API specifications SL or SJ; this means the oil contains adequate ZDDP (anti-wear additive) for a rotary engine. There is no point in using synthetics in a rotary, but there are several reasons not to use them. The main reason is that you should be changing your oil at no more than 3K regardless of the oil you use. The second reason is that synthetics have a higher flash point and will increase soft carbon build up inside a rotary engine. I use a 20W-50 conventional oil (Castrol Classic [high ZDDP]) in the crankcase, and a 10W-30 oil (Castrol GTX) mixed with 20% Marvel mystery oil in the Sohn. I still pre-mix using a castor oil based two stroke mix (Klotz Estorlin Benol) since it is one of the few clean burning non-synthetics (and it makes the exhaust smell better). I do NOT recommend using Idemitsu in a rotary since it IS synthetic (although they have great products for non-rotaries). Since this post hasn't been updated, here is where you can find the Sohn adapter: www.ebay.com/itm/195826815768

have u thought about putting in a small hole in the cap of the resovior so that air pressure doesnt make the omp have trouble pumping the oil? just a thought that occured to me. let me explain, when the omp needs to pump oil into the rotor housings, it sucks the oil, but the oil resovior will build negative pressuse inside it, this might make the oil pumping hard to do cuz the resovior itself is making a negative air pressure. if u guys are confused, dont worry, i am not the best at explaining what i mean. heres an example, when u drink from a water bottle and seal ur lips around the bottle and dont let air into the bottle, the bottle shrinks and crumbles due to negative air pressure, now im saying the same idea to the resovior, except the resovior won't crumble, cuz its probably hard plastic, but if u put some type of filtered air hole in the cap, that won't occur and the OMP will get the right amount of oil without any backpressure. just my 2 cents, take it or leave, dont flame chat.

The Rx8 injects normal motor oil in the combustion chamber to lubricate the rotor sides and the apex seals. With this mod you disconect it from this cycle. The sohn adapter will inject premix oil to your combustion chamber instead of the normal motor oil. So you dont have that much carbon build up and inject fresh 2 stroke oil. Result: Better lubrication (fresh 2 stroke oil, no dirty motor oil), 2 stroke oil will burn completly (nearly no carbon build up) and the rx8 won´t drain any motor oil anymore.

Cover it with a nice fuzzy blanket to keep her nice and warm :) Thank you sooooo soooo much :D I wish you a merry Christmas to you, Yuu-Chan and your family! may 2018 be a year full of adventures and unforgettable memories :)

Link is in the description buddy. Myself, I mix 250ml on a full tank. Theoretically, any kind of 2 stroke oil will do. I use Castrol RS.
@thefury74107 жыл бұрын
I use 250:1 ratio, well Idemitsu recommends roughly 256:1 (0.5oz per gallon) but it is harder to measure. For 50L gas you add 195.5mL oil (for 256:1) or 200mL oil (for 250:1). By the way he has made a video about premixing before, the link is in the video description.

How much oil does the Sohn adapter use; how often do you have to add 2 stroke oil to the reservoir?
@Drivenbymadness6 жыл бұрын
Depends on how hard you drive it, or in other words hwo often you take it above 6000prm. If you do that every once in a while, you'll use maybe max 2 liters of oil in one year, depending on how many kilometers you make. If your drive it hard most of the time, you can use 4-6 liters per year. Adding 2 stroke in fuel is called premixing. Here's a video i made that explains the process and how to do it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3irlaFmlrCbrrM&t

Ok, so, for clarification. Once The Sohn oil adapter kit is installed just like it is in this video, you only need to add the Idumetsu Racing Rotary Oil Premix to the Sohn oil adapter, not letting it empty, check it and fill up every gas station stop, right? You can disregard the oil in the oil pan, and the dipstick, as they are no longer needed since all oil is coming from the sohn oil adapter, meaning you no longer need to change and fill the oil pan oil and just leave it how it is, right? You should still premix, about 8 oz per fuel tank (which is how much I premix now), right? *Again: The oil in the oil pan, and therefore the dipstick, can be fully ignored? No checking it's levels or changing, since it will no longer be used, right?*
@Drivenbymadness5 жыл бұрын
Yes. - Oil in oil pan is now there just to lubricate parts, not to be injected in rotors. You should stil check it, but way less often. I do it every 3 months, since i change oil 2 times a year. -You fill up the sohn bottle as you see it the lever lear empty. Once it's at 1/4, it's a good idea to fill it up, but you dont have to do it everytime you fill the car with fuel, it doesn't go dows that fast. Every second or third stop when filling up with fuel, check it. - Premixing is not obligatory, but if you premixed before, you still need to do it.

xXnexioXx / NexioEdits. You can either premix or not. Sadly there is no automatic way to do it. I have the rotary bum premix kit where you pre-fill bottles with the amount of oil that is proportionate to the amount of fuel you usually put in. Check out my premix video to get a better idea :)

If you spray your windows every day 2 times, then you'll have to refill it every week. But if you spray them only a couple of times per year, then you'll probably refill it 4 times in the whole year. I rather wash my windows at the petrol station than use m fluid and wear our blades. Cheers :)

@Drivenbymadness5 жыл бұрын
Sohn does not change the quantity, only the type of oil that the engine injects to lubricate. Premix is a separate thing, where you put 2stroke oil in the gas tank. If you were premixing, continue to premix.

I live in Europe, and as you might know, inspection centers are picky with emissions going above OEM standards. How much is this going to affect my emissions?
@Drivenbymadness2 жыл бұрын
Zero, in theory it should make emissions better, because the engine won't burn dirty engine oil but clean 2 stroke oil. I'm also from Europe and have to battle the same inspections, and i never had an even the slightest issue with emissions after the install. Hope this helps.
@RedLine_Renesis2 жыл бұрын
@@Drivenbymadness It did help. Thanks!
@adammiller5136 Жыл бұрын
A Sohn shouldn't impact your emissions. I wouldn't use premix oil in the Sohn because the OMP/MOP is not calibrated for the viscosity of 2-stroke oil. Use standard oil in your Sohn. Use 2 stroke oil mixing in your gasoline. I wouldn't pre-mix for your inspection day, just use a clean tank of gas on that day and add the pre-mix in after your inspection.
