looks like #2 either ran lean because of injector failing to provide enough fuel or the carbon build up caused enough hot spots to create a pre ign knock shattering that piston. that said do an egr delete if its not necessary to pass emissions in your state and you can do a combustion chamber smoothing to prevent such situations.

@WannabeTuners
@WannabeTuners 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Hotspots were most likely the issue from excess carbon build up, as all the injectors tested fine after they were recently serviced. The datalog showed high knock retard values for several cells before it blew. We've got a secondary EGR delete which keeps the EGR valve in place, but gets rid of the pipe going to the intake manifold :) I'm definitely thinking of polishing the combustion chamber in the head to prevent hot spots in the built engine.

From what I've read it isn't recommended or even necessary on a stock engine. If building the engine and upgrading to ARP 2000 main studs, it is necessary, as the balance shaft assembly does not clear the protrusion of the studs ;)

@ryandormann9621
@ryandormann9621 4 жыл бұрын
Egr is for reducing reactive cylinder volume. It effectively reduces the displacement of the engine under specific conditions like highway cruising to save gas. Similar idea for cylinder deactivation in v8s. A cylinder always pulls a specific volume and you need to keep fuel ratios within limits or engine damage will occur. By filling the cylinder with spent exhaust gas which is no oxygen content, you can inject less fuel safely. So it doesnt matter how many cylinders you pull from.
@WannabeTuners

@@ryandormann9621 It is just now occurring to me that the exhaust diverted by the EGR goes to all cylinders. And the computer knows what the exhaust/fuel/air ratio should be. There has got to be a less oily and intrusive way to meet emission standards. Thanks for the feed back.

When you spoke about the turbo oil line, you mentioned there is no filter - it the main engine filter not in line with it? Why do you say that line gets clogged?
@WannabeTuners
@WannabeTuners Ай бұрын
I've seen on some other platforms that there is a small pre-filter in behind the banjo bolt where the turbo oil feed line exits the block. This filter was not present in my engine. I think that the purpose of those pre-filters is to prevent premature wear of the turbos bearings from engine break in material. That being said, I had never had any issues with my turbos bearing system getting worn out, even back when I was still on the stock turbo.

@WannabeTuners
@WannabeTuners 4 жыл бұрын
I think the rod failed first which then destroyed the piston. I think the WOT box ignition cut feature being used as a rev limiter stretched or fractured the rod, causing it to fail under moderate load. The WOT box however is required when utilizing aux fuel to prevent a lean burn. The moral of the story is that a stock block can handle abuse, just not a lot. It's better to build your engine if u intend on upgrading the turbo imo, because it WILL eventually blow :)

If that build-up on the valves is white, you were running super lean. Same thing happened to my head. Still have the valves if you want to see a picture of them. Heating it up with propane torch will make it flake off but don't reuse them.
@WannabeTuners
@WannabeTuners 4 жыл бұрын
In the video you can see just how thick the layering is on the faces of the exhaust valves. Only cylinder two appears white so it's highly possible that it was running lean for some reason. We recently had all 8 direct injectors from both the blown and used CX7 engine serviced and flow matched, so it's hard to say if the cylinder 2 injector was the cause of a potentially lean mixture since all injectors were tested and verified to be working. So the investigation continues lol

@@WannabeTuners Why target an 11.5 AFR when a stock speed3 will see AFR's in the 9s at WOT with just 93OCT?
@WannabeTuners
@WannabeTuners 4 жыл бұрын
@@corderomccargo4500The car was running 94 octane pump gas mixed with 3 gallons of in tank methanol when it blew, so octane should not have been an issue. An 11.5:1 AFR is still quite rich, and has proven to provide a nice balance between knock prevention and power production. The only reason the stock tune targets 9:1 is because the manufacturer doesn't want the engine to blow if low octane fuel is put into the tank. The manufacturer has to make sure the engine will last in many situations. When tuning, we are making sure we are running sufficient octane for what we are trying to achieve. It's important to keep in mind that pump gas alone will always be knock limited in most cases. Hence the reason for running a more rich AFR to try and use cylinder cooling to negate potential detonation.

Hello friend, greetings from Colombia. I bought a CX7 2.3 Turbo and did not realize that the engine had overheated. The mechanic says that the cylinder head and block are warped by the heat and that it is best to change the entire engine. I have searched a lot and I cannot find it in my country, is it possible to brush these parts so that they are flat again? They have told me that being made of aluminum it is not possible, others say yes ... What do you think?

Sorry about your blown motor :( I'm a fellow Canadian and own a 2010 Mazdaspeed 3 and was wondering if you run with an OCC. I've had a Damond Motorsports catch can waiting to be installed for a couple years, but I'm a bit nervous to do so as I daily drive the car year round. I had an e46 BMW 330i and its stock air oil separator (which is external to the engine) ended up freezing off and I blew my valve cover gasket and caused a serious repair. Given the design of a catch can is very similar to an AOS, I've been nervous about installing due to freeze off issues. What are your thoughts on this?
@WannabeTuners

I do run a Damond Motorsports oil catch catch, but I don't drive the car in the winter. The contents inside can and will freeze, trapping a large amount of crankcase pressure. I think in your case it's better to just clean the intake valves every 60,000 km's or so. If u want to reduce crankcase pressure, run a Speed Perf6rmanc3 oil breather cap ;)

The top side of the intake valves get carboned up over time with most if not all DI engines, but what we found concerning was the thick layer of hardened material that was built up on the faces of the exhaust valves within the actual combustion chamber. @WannabeTuners 3 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, if I hold it in for too long I may get sent into orbit lol. Yep we did look at the datalogs. The AFR was right on target at about 11.5:1, and the tune wasn't much different to what I had been running for several years in terms of timing and boost. I think the engine was just tired and weakened from back to back runs. Smashing that hard WOT box rev limiter over and over may have hurt cylinder 2's connecting rod, as that is what appears to have failed.

@@leolldankology They definitely belong in the wild that's for sure haha. Usually I mix 2 to 3 gallons of 100% methyl hydrate (aka methanol) to a full tank of 94 octane pump gas for more octane. Since we don't have E85 in our area, methanol is an easy alternative, and in low concentrations it doesn't pose any issues. I've been running in tank meth for almost 5 years now and my HPFP wasn't even gunky when we cleaned it out after the engine blew (probably because of such low concentrations). I may even try to run 4 gallons per tank if I feel the need at some point 😆

@@WannabeTuners why not run a meth/water injection kit with like a 60/40 mixture? I was reading some of the comments and I also think that you possibly had hot spots which caused pre-ignition on the compression stroke. The pieces of the connecting rod looks like it snapped due to it being compressed. Does your turbo sit behind cyl 2 n 3?
@WannabeTuners
@WannabeTuners 3 жыл бұрын
@@leolldankology I believe the turbine housing sits behind cylinders 2 and 3 (I would have to take a closer look), but I highly doubt that positioning of the turbo had anything to do with the engine blowing. It blew at around 4500 RPM making 320 ft lbs, and since the datalogs looked good, I'm thinking that it was just it's time. Methanol injection is always a good way to increase octane, but in my case I'm running 6th port injection, and I like to fill up only 1 tank. I did have a boost switched meth injection kit a while back on the stock turbo, but had to remove it because I had the pump and reservoir mounted behind the front bumper, which got in the way when I went to a front mount intercooler setup. If I can't get enough octane with in tank meth (which I doubt), I may just re-install the meth kit and run a small nozzle again.

I'm pretty sure it all happened right when the engine blew, when large amounts of oil hit scorching hot exhaust valves. The valves with the most buildup were on cylinder two, where the piston was in pieces allowing the most amount of oil to get into that combustion chamber. It's very interesting to dissect and try to understand the process of how it blew. It's definitely a unique experience as it's not every day that we blow an engine ;)

Stock rods go around 400 TQ. You bent a rod and the engine blew.

Yeah it gets messy real quick, my advice is to go built before it happens ;)

There are a lot of great how to's on exactly what you need to do on the forum. If you have any questions you can PM me on there too. I created them while doing my build thread. www.mazdaspeeds.org/index.php?forums/mazdaspeed-3-how-to.109/

Apparently you can use a 2.5 block from a Ford fusion they are stronger than the speed block plus bigger pistons

If the 2.5 Ford Fusion block is anything like the MZR L5 block they're not as strong as the DISI turbo 2.3 as they don't have the forged steel crank of the L3T. The 2.5 has a cast crank.

All options are worth looking into, but at this point for us the most cost effective way to go is to simply get our used CX7 long block built with a 0.5 mm over bore, and 88 mm forged pistons and rods ;)

Ya I currently have a cx7 motor in my car I guy close to me does a lot of the 2.5 swaps

@@davidknelsen6257 the 2.5 isn't really a performance motor, it's a grocery getter with a nice flat torque curve. The cast crank combined with the overly undersquare design of the 2.5 and the fact that the L3T DISI block is generally cast a little better where it counts makes the 2.3 the better choice.

Ok might be but the guy said it makes a little more torque and hp
