Woohoo! Got my CX7 2.3L Turbo back up and running - thank you so much for the video and the answer to the comments along the way... I had the scariest moment though - on first start the engine seized after a few seconds despite being primed... I thought it was game over... pulley would not turn over by hand!!! Dropped pan and found one of the rod bearings chewed up and material stuck to crank... heart sank! I polished off the material on rod journal - crank was perfectly fine as it had not heated up... I changed bearings and noticed that the rod cap had no side to side play on the one that seized... then it struck me - the caps of the replacement connecting rods must have been switched (either by myself or the guy who sent me a new used set). When I swapped the caps over, the rod caps had nice side to side play. Put balance shaft back in, threw in the sump pan, and the engine now purs...Works perfectly and has zero smoke. Got a few 100km on it now, and it's smooth as butter! That was scary AF!

I love the fact you guys did this from a first timers perspective and your natural anxiety given the money involved made this probably the only video I've ever watched like this that I'd watch again for the learning experience if I was going to do this build, there is a speed 3 (they are called MPS 3s in Australia here) in good nick higher ks 200,000 ks (thank god you guys are Canadian too so understand ks too 😂) for 4.5k Australia dollars so about 4k Canadian but bottom end is gone so bearings at least maybe a rod not sure if the block is reusable but it almost seems worth it if the block is intact and just upgrade all the parts you did and bore the cylinders out. Although a new block and head would be nice too. Or even a second hand engine that is low ks and do it before it blows to ensure longevity. Great video guys really enjoyed it seems like a good community out there for the speeds/mps.

Before dropping the head on, rotate the crank backwards 45° from 1 and 4 at TDC. Then the head can be installed. When you put the cams on the head, get the timing close on the cams. Then the cam timing tool can be put in and the crank turned in the normal direction of rotation. Now the timing gears and chain can be installed.

18:30: It's a debatable topic because when you install somthing that needs to be torqued down , you pull the clamping hardware down and when you do another pass you go above the initial torque you had set it to , think about how many passes at 35nm you could do before they all are actually at 35 nm , the gasket will keep crushing

When you put the main seal on - did it not push the RTV into the pan in the bottom? Is the correct procedure to put in the main seal first, and then RTV the oil pan after fully under the main seal?
@WannabeTuners11 ай бұрын
That's a good question. I think to be extra safe, you could apply additional RTV to the bottom side of rear main seal after it's been installed and just flatten it out with your finger. I haven't noticed any leaks though :)

Question about the oil pump sprocket and timing chain sprocket.... I'm planning on using the mustang ecoboost crankshaft and will have it Keyed. Did you just use the factory oil pump sprocket and timing chain sprocket and had a machine shop key them? Or did you purchased them already with a Keyed passageway?
@WannabeTuners3 жыл бұрын
Yes we got our machine shop to key the OEM crankshaft, OEM timing chain sprocket, and OEM oil pump sprocket. Only 2 friction washers are used. One in between the timing chain sprocket and crankshaft, and one in between the oil pump sprocket and crank pulley. If you key the crank pulley as well, the friction washers are not necessary from what I've read :)

I was expecting total silence with oil on pistons and cylinder wall. What has been your experience? Don't want to progress in the build until I know it is normal for some light scraping sounds on new rings and newly honed cylinder walls - please share your thoughts!

Just tried to prime engine after rebuild - did 10 second bursts for about 30 to 40 seconds - the low oil pressure light did not go out. (Has spark plugs out and foot flat on accelerator to disable injectors). Called it a night - will try again tomorrow. What was your experience like - how long did you have to crank engine to get the oil warning lamp on dash to go out?
@WannabeTuners6 ай бұрын
I went based off of my AEM oil pressure gauge. I'm not sure if the low oil pressure light will extinguish while cranking, as the oil pressure won't be as high while cranking. If I recall correctly, we only needed to crank it a few times before we saw oil pressure on the gauge. I think once we maxed out at around 35 psi, we we're good to go.

Great video, one suggestion is to put that return bung on the oil pan higher up... the higer the better
@WannabeTuners4 жыл бұрын
Like higher up on the oil pan? We didn't want to drill into the block itself. The nice thing about where we placed it, is that the oil pick up tube is on the opposite side of the oil pan baffle, so we shouldn't have any issues with turbulence at the pick up. Also, the oil returning to the pan is under pressure since it's being bled off, so it's essentially forcing it's way back into the oil pan through the oil that's already in the pan. So far no issues and the smoking turbo issue is completely resolved. We'll make a video that covers the full setup in more detail ;)

Glad to see you guys are back. I want to point out that the crank pulley is still crucial to the engine running. Sure, if it slips, you will not damage valves. However the car will not run right or stop running altogether, as the pulley tells the ecu crank position.

Wannabe Tuners I’ll be building and going BNR S4 after I hit 100k (2022 probably). Looking forward to seeing you running again. Really interested in how that oil feed works. Just curious if something stopped you. I want to try it that way because I have big hands and the EM is a PITA for me.
@WannabeTuners4 жыл бұрын
@@Onimaru924 Yeah u could probably do it without issue as long as the turbo is already clocked the way u want it to be. We just wanted to swap the V2 CHRA back in, so that if it got damaged from engine break-in material for whatever reason, we could simply swap the V3 CHRA back in. So we needed to retro fit the turbo assembly into the car and clock the CHRA, turbine housing, and compressor housing to have perfect alignment in relation to the under route piping, downpipe, and oil feed/return lines. Then take the turbo back out to fully tighten the turbine housing bolts and raise the anti back out plates. As for the custom oil feed line, we state in writing that the way we assembled the Turbosmart OPR and FP Red Inline Filter should NOT be followed because it starved our S4 V2 turbo of oil. We have since sorted that issue and will be making a video that outlines all the little issues we've sorted out since first starting the new engine :)

@@pingpong9656 I think you'd probably have to refer to a workshop manual of some kind. I think that info could possibly be found online for free ;)

When you put the oil pump in - did you have to prime it before installing? Or does it go in dry and you crank the car with starter after car is back in car? Please let us know what your experience was!
@WannabeTuners7 ай бұрын
We just installed it dry. We primed the engine before first start by cranking the engine until we saw oil pressure on our AEM gauge with the pressure transducer installed into a sandwich plate above the oil filter.

@@WannabeTuners Sounds good - I did run a bit of oil threw my new pump before install, just to lube it up a bit - good to know it will self prime!

@pingpong9656 Yeah good idea to lube it up before install!

Logically wouldn’t you want to torque the bolts to closer to the minimum torque spec than the max because then they will be able to take more abuse before snapping as they they are less deep into the elasticity zone of the material? Just an after thought, not that I think it would rly matter given the security factor they probably equate into that torque spec anyways.
@WannabeTuners4 жыл бұрын
If you've got experience when it comes to tightening fasteners by feel, I see no issue doing so ONLY for the less important hardware. That being said, torque specs and sequences are always a good idea. In my experience, I've had several instances where I attempted to tighten a fastener to the recommended torque spec, and it snapped the fastener. Going by feel is sometimes better, especially if small hardware is being reused ;)
@knightfall75344 жыл бұрын
Wannabe Tuners oh absolutely, I meant for some of the bolts where you had a range of torque specs to chose from and you chose closer to the top of it than the bottom. Either way if you know what you’re doing, by feel is almost always more consistent, take metrology for example, these guys go all by feel and are light years ahead of what the little ratchet can get for accuracy on a micrometer. It all hinges on experience, Love the build!

Did you put any thread-lock or sealant on the flywheel bolts? Workshop manual does not mention anything but torque... ? I guess as engine rotates it would be very hard for oil to gather near bolt area, because it is continuously being flung off..,
@WannabeTuners6 ай бұрын
The flywheel bolts aren't exposed to engine oil. Mazda torque specs were used and no thread sealant was used.
@pingpong96566 ай бұрын
@@WannabeTuners 2:00:38 you mentioned you put new bolts with some version of thread-lock that was already on it - did I not understand that correctly - did you just use the old bolts with no thread-lock or sealant?
@WannabeTuners6 ай бұрын
@pingpong9656 If I recall correctly the new OEM flywheel bolts have a blue dry thread lock on the threads

I have a question I hope some one can help me. I am trying to build a mazdaspeed 6 up to 600 hp I was wondering if the stock block and head will keep up with it. Off course I will upgrade the head gasket and bolts as well as the internals. Thanks in advance
@WannabeTuners4 жыл бұрын
A forged bottom end with stock head has been proven to be able to make 600 hp, but from what I've read that seems to be the limits for a stock head. It becomes too much of a restriction if trying to make more than 600 hp.

Did you get the bottom half of that balanced at the shop before you put it together?

Nope, our machine shop said it wasn't necessary because of the level of quality of the rods and pistons, and that the crankshaft itself is very well balanced from factory

Guys, tip for the future, tape the hoes and then use zip tight so when you cut the line every single wire will stay at the place dont remove the tape until u place AN fiting and then you will be able to pull the tape holding the fitting in ist place. Btw appreciate so much content you make, wish for more videos comming soon

Would APR 2000 head studs Work Fine???? L19 are a little out of my budget Lol
@WannabeTuners3 жыл бұрын
From what I've read online, some people have experienced issues with their cylinder heads lifting with ARP 2000 head studs. That's not to say that they wouldn't work, because who knows, maybe those cases were isolated. I think for the peace of mind, it's better to play it safe and spend the addition couple hundred bucks for the L19's :)
