Thank you so much for this! As a sufferer of Pure OCD for many years now I have searched all over the internet for resources to help me perform exposures. I never really figured out how to let go of mental compulsions until now since it's so hard to distinguish them from the obsessions. I really liked your technique of deliberately bringing to mind obsession so we can use mindfulness to let go of the compulsions. I've never thought about it before.

The Covid-19 agenda in 2020 made me that way. I didn’t use hand sanitizer, but I was washing my hands so often that I ran out of lotion and my hands got dry. Maybe I could pretend I live in the first half of the 20th century, when wearing gloves was very common.

Understanding that "The misfortune of an individual is not that he was deceived, but in that he deceived himself" provides a call to introspection and honesty with oneself.

With Covid and Monkey Pox out here, I dont know if the Not washing my Hands is gonna Work.

If you're in close contact with someone who has covid or monkey pox, it’s important to follow recommended hygiene practices, including washing your hands. But if you find yourself excessively washing your hands in everyday situations due to OCD, the goal is to learn to tolerate not washing your hands in situations where it’s not necessary. If you have OCD and a hand-washing compulsion, not washing your hands every time you touch something potentially contaminated can help you learn that nothing bad happens if you don’t wash excessively. This approach is often the most effective way to manage contamination-based OCD. ERP involves facing uncomfortable situations and refraining from compulsive behaviors to reduce symptoms. This doesn’t mean taking reckless risks, but rather, it’s about learning to manage OCD symptoms while still practicing good hygiene.

I hope that the example of not washing hands during the whole day are purely educational. I cannot imagine myself spending the whole day in public places and then not washing hands after coming home, especially before cooking and eating! It is a part of my culture- wash hands when you come home, and just a good hygiene habit. Another example I strongly disagree with is putting my bag on the public restroom floor. Then I will bring the bag home and there will be public restroom in my home, eww. I felt uncomfortable when you were explaining those examples, sorry, doctor.

Thanks for your comment. Your reaction is common. These are specific exercises to help treat contamination based OCD and are designed to create discomfort. In order for ERP to be effective, the exposure exercises need to provoke a feeling of contamination. If there's no discomfort then there's no learning from the exercise that can help reduce OCD. Regular handwashing before eating is good hygiene. However, if someone washes their hands excessively whenever they touch something and feels extreme anxiety if they can't wash them, learning that skipping handwashing won't cause harm can effectively reduce fear of contamination and help stop compulsive handwashing.
