I think one of the big things with stun is that a lot of decks aren't able to run enough outs to a wall of floodgates because if they devote heavy main deck space to it they just get steamrolled by combo decks. There really isn't much room for stuff like twisters or whatever in the main like there was 5 or 6 years ago
@Kylora2112 Жыл бұрын

@otterfire4712 Жыл бұрын
Stun in Yugioh is more easily set up and established compared to stun in other games due to a lack of resources like mana, energy, lands, etc to give a timer before they become active. This timer also gives opponents the chance to gather resources for a response whether removal or counter. A lot of stun in MtG is more of a taxing effect where you can still play the card, just at the cost of extra mana or life. Dragon Ball Super's card game has one turn floodgates that fill a similar role to MtG's stun cards, where the opponent pays a cost to advance for the rest of the turn. DBS has a couple cards that also effectively shut down attacking altogether, but they typically come at a great cost in hand advantage.
@Kylora2112 Жыл бұрын
Yeah. Like, sick, you drew 3 different floodgates that make it so I can't activate a single card effect even if I draw my outs. There's a guy at my locals that plays the new Naturia stuff, and it's like I need to open Sphere Mode be able to do anything.
@troy242621 Жыл бұрын
The big thing is the mana cost. You can't just drop Ensnaring bridge turn 1, it's at risk of being thoughtseized, inquisitioned, countered or them drawing an out before it lands. Mine can just come down instantly and you're fucked. Not to mention, mtg decks usually run these tools *maindeck*. In YGO, maindeck non-monster backrow removal isn't super common.

Yeah, the real issue is that nearly every spell/trap in Yugioh can be activated before your opponent's first battle phase and don't really hinder your development at all (beyond the fact that it's a card that could've been some other card), while in Magic these cards actually cost mana, generally taking up your entire turn to deploy in the early game, or even putting you down cards if you're trying to cheat them out ahead of curve. This mean it will generally take 3+ turns after that to actually finish the game, even with strong followup threats, so the other player has time to dig out of it. Unlike with Yugioh, where if you stumble for a single turn, you know you're likely dead on the crack back.

I'm fine with Pendulums as they are now, but they were absolutely a jump-the-shark moment for Yu-Gi-Oh. Fusions were "use spell card or effect to turn 2+ monsters into big monster." Synchros were "use Tuner and 1+ non-tuner, add levels to the Synchro's level." Xyz was "put cards of same level on top of each other then the Xyz on that, the original cards may be detached for effects." For Pendulums, you need to remember: -There's 2 effects, one as a monster, one as a spell. -Playing as a spell is restricted to specific zones. -While played as a spell, it is treated as a spell, but not treated as a Normal, Field, Continuous, Ritual, or Quick-Play Spell. You can’t play another Pendulum monster in the Pendulum zone a Pendulum monster is already occupying (like Continuous, unlike Field). -Putting Pendulums in the pendulum zones means once per turn you can Pendulum Summon monsters from your hand between the scale number on each Pendulum on the field (non-inclusive). -There has never been a Pendulum monster with 2 different scales printed but the possibility still exists and it may matter what zone it's in but right now it doesn't. -A Pendulum monster on the field that would go to the GY goes face-up in the extra deck instead, which means you can't use them as cost if the cost requires sending to the GY. -When you Pendulum Summon, you can summon Pendulum monsters from the face-up extra deck to the extra monster zone or a monster zone a Link monster is pointing to. When doing this, if you would summon an Xyz Pendulum, you use the material requirements for the Xyz summon as its "level". -Fusion Pendulums, Synchro Pendulums, and Xyz Pendulums face-up in the extra deck cannot be summoned using Fusion, Synchro, and Xyz summoning respectively, and can only be Pendulum Summoned if properly summoned previously.
@dhanyl2725 Жыл бұрын
We have sword of revealing light for the face-up but not continuous argument tho... @@teddi6909 these are my thoughts as probably to why: 1-limiting "send to gy" costs 2-Xyz Material pendulums do still go to gy (Xyz was the main previous summoning mechanic so it was really good) 3- limiting support. There's also an assload of strange edge cases (some of which stopped being edge cases because of intentional design in the era). When a pendulum in the pendulum zone is destroyed, why does the monster floating effect activate? What happens if a pendulum card is destroyed while Macro Cosmos is on the field? Why do pendulum cards go to the graveyard if they were XYZs material? What properties of the monster does a pendulum card keep if its in the pendulum zone (level, type, attribute, name)? Why are pendulums never treated as spells except exactly when they're in the pendulum zone? Some of the answers make sense if you know other relatively obscure rulings (XYZs materials aren't "on the field", Trap and spell monsters return to just being traps or spells in the graveyard), but pendulums are just such a massive "exception to prior and future mechanics" in so many ways that they're just exceedingly difficult to explain to newer players, and even older players will get tripped up on some of the edge cases or the way the mechanics interact with individual cards. The whole "there's only been a few good decks" argument also makes no sense to me, Pepe in some incarnation went in and out of play for about 2-3 years, Pend ftk (and the non-ftk version of the same thing) was in an out for about the same, and pendulum cards were splashed in a variety of different decks (Lunalights - orcust, predaplants - branded, etc), enough that not knowing the mechanics well could easily lead to a bad play or loss.

My biggest pet peeve with the game was that my locals became nothing but "that deck is trash it is low tier" when I was playing something fun or "let me see your trades" and when they saw something they were interested in they immediately whipped out their phone to get a price to try and buy it instead of actually doing a trade. I stopped going when it became nothing but a money game where the players with the heaviest wallet had the "best" deck because it was tier 1 or won a tournament rather than because they genuinely liked it. So i stuck to just playing sims and I have a much better time.

I feel that comment about decks getting reduced to vessels for Floodgates or similar; i've been a a Sky Striker player for a while now, and I really like the way the deck plays; I like that I don't have to combo off forever, but every choice I make matters, I gotta pick the best option for the situation and if I make a correct read, it wins me the whole game. Its really satisfying to play. But for so long people would just roll their eyes and complain about Mystic Mine the second they saw a Raye. I'm not playing it, its so boring, and i'd rather lose than be bored, but Sky Striker just seemed to become synonymous with mine, and I disliked it.

my biggest pet peeves is when people try to make you play at their rules/pace. if you constantly search your deck they threaten to call judge on you. another example is once the coin toss is set, and you and your opponent drew your starting hand, but the locals judge forgot to start timer on screen (but still calls it vocally), and everyone else is already playing but your opponent tells you that you cant look at your cards or else you have to mulligan and they threaten judge if you refuse. This is literally one guy at locals, and he plays ishizu tear (tear 0 format for those in the future) Edit: seeing one of them reminds me that same guy also plays so fast that he gets irritated if you try to chain a response

The problem with floodgates in Yugioh vs MTG is that in magic, you have both various ways of dealing with floodgates, AND can afford to wait until you get those answers. If a floodgate in yugioh stops you from playing for 1 turn, you probably already lost. Yugioh doesn't have the same answers for floodgates that mtg has. For example, if torpor orb (negate monster effects that enter the battlefield) was running rampant in a meta, since it's an artifact, there are various cards that destroy artifacts while also progressing your own boardstate. Or, the removal is diverse, where if you don't run into a torpor orb, that same card you would use to remove the torpor orb can be used to remove a creature or enchantment in other match ups. This does not exist in yugioh at a playable competitive level. There isn't a card that reads "Choose one- you can MST, Or you gain an additional normal summon this turn, or you can have all your monsters gain 500 ATK until end of turn." Whereas there are tons of magic cards that do stuff like this. We have TTT for problematic monsters or handtraps, but it can't deal with TCBOO.
@youtube-kit9450Ай бұрын
I mean, we would have cards that deal with it like lightning storm, harpie's feather duster or heavy storm, it's just that duster is limited and storm is banned. We'd have answers, but Konami insists on limiting/banning them immediately.

One of the cool things about the halq ban (at least in md) and the release of linkage is that the deck is actually a lot less reliant on ACT to end games. The empty board linkage otk is obviously a fun highroll, but on turn 4-6 where your opponent has run low on resources and taken a few hits from Hayate, you can easily get Roze on the grave and attack-linkage Kagari targeting linkage-linkage shizuku/kaina/etc and just beat them down for the same or better damage that ACT could have done, on the same turn it would come down. The halq ban also makes the ACT like a lot less reliable, since you can't control what's in your opponent's GY. So it's more just a great option to go into sometimes, when your opponent has left themselves open to it. Otherwise you just keep throwing girls at them until they fall over.

If you hate riffle shuffling. You will hate Pokemon. You're practically required to do it. This is because, as I've learned from going to bigger events, if you're anywhere in the top half of tables. If you don't riffle. Your opponent doesn't just have the right to cut your deck. By that games mechanics they have the right to shuffle for you. And they'll always riffle when they do. And while there's no 1,000s of dollars being tossed at a deck. It's still very cringe inducing to me when I see someone with their 100 dollar plus, high rarity, cards and unblinkingly riffle it.

The 2 biggest pet peeves I have are: 1. Lost of deck identity and mislabeling. A deck with a clear strategy, monster, bosses, etc get reduced to an engine of 2-3 cards and people have the fucking audacity to put that archetype name in their deck. No, just because you have 3 blue-eyes cards in your deck does not make it a Blue-eyes deck in any capacity. 2. Net Deckers. Let me be clear. Copying a deck from online isn't the issue. That's fine for when you are starting your deck building. But don't act like we don't know that you pulled that deck, card for card, off of an online profile. It's a meta deck that won a regional and you just showed up at locals with it, we know exactly where you got that deck from because your ability to pilot it is subpar.

I feel like yugioh has a really big amount of casual elitists who get extremely mad if you play a meta deck which often is any deck higher rated than tier 8. "Uh the game is so easy so I don't use staples and play only pure ghostrick" The idea that meta decks somehow take little to no skill is also very common with these people. Play what you want but don't let powerlevel dictate what you allow yourself and others to enjoy. I like a lot of rogue decks but if a deck I like ends up meta I ain't suddenly dropping that just because its too good.
@nicholasfarrell59816 ай бұрын
Lemme correct you on this one thing: *all* Ghostrick players run staples (yes, all 3 of us). I got called on it once and literally just said "of course I am, I'm playing _GHOSTRICKS_ and I want to pretend that I have a chance".
@RamixTheRed Жыл бұрын
6:36 I think this is more of a case of people who complain having valid criticisms but not being informed enough to know who to blame. Watching through prog series and history I get the sense that a lot of the problems people complain about with modern ygo *did* begin around the Pendulum Era, even if it wasn't specifically Pendulums that did it. That said, the ability to pend 5 every single turn did significantly contribute to how much the game sped up, and decks that *weren't* doing that had to be able to do compete with that, and this led to what I think is one of the biggest eras of powercreep in the game.
@applejhon8308 Жыл бұрын
I think the animosity towards stun comes from the variaty of decks you can run into. If you're going into a game playing a rouge or pet deck it's a bit of a gut punch to be completely shut down because your opponent normal summoned a single monster or set a single peice of back row. It's a similar thing for hand traps and related staples as well. Dispite essentially being powercrept themselves, if you're playing in an environment with lots of casual decks and older archetypes, cards like ash and imperm go from being speed bumps to sacky instant win cards. With the added implication that now everyone there is going to have to start running them dispte often drastically lowering the consistency of decks not built around one card starters and endless recursion.

My pet peeves is when people complain about their card getting banned and their deck doesn't work anymore. I'm gonna to be honest, my heart kinda sank when I found out the best thing ppl were doing with cyberdarks was Union Buster+their bundle of archetypal omni-negates. 7:43 Yeah as someone who hasn't really dipped deep into playing YuGiOh this is a take I can understand and get behind fully. It's also sad when they print one good card to fix an archetype but then it's generic enough that it's just splashed into meta decks instead. Just feels a bit sad especially if you're someone invested in that specific style of cards and then find out you can just play this new support in meta so there's still nothing for your archetype to make it relevant.

1:29 - The number of people that take locals way too seriously was way too high last I played. It was a while ago so hopefully it's gotten better. I have seen a bunch of people just slam their hands on the table, pack up their stuff, and drop from the tournament because they lost to like... Ghostricks, or some random Karakuri deck long after they were even close to relevant. It's usually in Swiss, so I know they usually have at least one loss before we get to the table slam, but it happens way too often. Control decks can be fun, as long as they don't rely 100% on floodgates. To win with these decks you have to understand how your opponent's deck works better than them. I have hope for Labrynth with the future support in master duel. Again, no floodgates, except for bagooska maybe, because special summoning it from the graveyard during the opponent's turn with the field spell is the funniest interaction.
@FakeHeroFang Жыл бұрын
I feel like Labrynth and set 5 floodgates pass are entirely different decks. Actual control decks still have to play the game, a floodgate deck just sits there until they cheese you to death with burn damage or something, or the opponent draws the out and finally pushes through.
@EinDose Жыл бұрын
Runick's right up this alley (admittedly by a weird definition of control), and I think has an interesting interaction with Skill Drain as a floodgate, where THEY don't want it either; their search and protection effects are hugely important to them, so they have to be really careful about playing it. Rivalry/Gozen/TCBOO are almost disappointingly strong in comparison, but you still want to be careful about overloading on them, since they take up backrow spots you'll really want and most decks only choke on like, one of them TOPS.

I hate to tell you but Magic does indeed have a card that says, verbatim, "monsters can't use their effects" It also turns all monsters on the field into 1/1s

Biggest pet peeve for me in modern is just solely the lack of variety. 10+ games in a row against the same exact deck from different people playing it the exact same way like machines really hammers into you that people aren't here to have fun playing a card game with you. When it's in a tournament with actual worthwhile prizes, that's different, but if you're showing up to casuals with tear 0 I should have the right to slap you across the face with Melffy Staring Contest.

Mtg's equivalent to Ygo stun decks are called Staxs decks which are equally as hated in my experience

1:20 "This only works if Dire actually did her job so, we'll see" I was expecting "Rare Dire W" to actually pop up after this

I think stun is especially frustrating I'm yugioh because of how fast the game is. In magic spending 4 turns of nothing is expected

I defense of Weather Painter, needing to open 3 specific cards for your optimal board and Piri Reis conflicting with Extrav makes running 10 handtraps and Small World more viable than running a trap heavy line up outside of the side. Shifter is still a necesary evil as you can play under it mostly unempeaded, Shifter, Snow, and Droll all share 1 thing for Small World with each other, and Shifter is the only one that can bridge Rain to Snow. I really would perfer not playing it, as it prevents Cloud's effect, but as you said about it in Magical Hats a while back, "I wish we didn't have to have it".

Biggest pet peeve for me is getting laughed at for playing a rogue deck in locals as if that's not where you should play rogue. Back when I started playing again it was tier 0 nekroz format and this guy played nekroz. I was on batteryman. The guy set up djinn lock, I activated stormforth and laughs saying that my deck is bad, dunno why since stormforth is busted. I tribute his djinn lock claus for charger. I get ready for the otk and even set up photon strike bounzer to stop valk. And win game one. He then gets his friends over and they also laugh at me. Anyways I won game 3 cos 9 volt is a good card. Words of wisdom: play what you want and have fun just don't be a asshole.

6:34 Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines is basically Skill Drain if Skill Drain was on a decent-sized beater, only affected your opponent, and also read "Your activated effects activate twice."
