Hi! We’re adopting a 4 month old rescue this weekend and I was wondering what type of treats do you use for training sessions like these? Most “training treats” I see usually recommend max 10 pieces/day... I know it’s also recommended to use some of their kibble before meals but what is best to use the rest of the time? ☺️ Thank you so much for your videos!
@chriscode6431
@chriscode6431 3 жыл бұрын
@@designerdreams02 hi, popping in with an answer. The max is mentioned so your puppy doesn't get fat. As long as weight is good, it's good. Using his food is definitely a good idea. Otherwise, try for as minimally processed treat as possible. You could even use dehydrated chicken.

This video is very helpful, but the one issue I had was that Kayl said that eventually you can say, “yes!” And you don’t have to reward. Now there are ways to wean your dog off of having to use food every time they do something right. But if you just stop using food when you say, “yes” then that lessens the value of it and they may eventually stop caring/paying attention to that word.

@@ishanrocky9841 i honestly have mixed feelings about Zak George... I feel like he lacks some dog language reading skill as well as not being able to predict or prevent undesirable behaviours properly enough. It appears to me, from his videos, that he’s still quite a clumsy trainer himself too. (I personally also find it quite annoying when a significant portion of a video is just (payed) advertisement.) He does things with great intentions though! I believe in the end he’s definitely a good person just trying to figure out what could help a certain dog and then keeps trying and trying until he gets the training results he was looking for (e.g. what I saw of him with his puppy) He just lacks the ability to predict and prevent behaviours, therefore taking way longer and sometimes unnecessarily confusing the dog in the process. Just my personal opinion though, I started off learning from early Cesar Millan, I’ve come a long way too haha I believe that wherever you try to get inspiration, you shouldn’t completely rule out someone’s advice because of one thing they said, but on the other hand always remain curious yet critical. Approach your sources with a healthy sense of curiosity for what you might learn from them, but always keep in mind that, even if they really don’t mean to or realise this themselves, they might be wrong and/or there might be better ways to tackle a certain problem.

Your videos have helped me so much! I've had a lot of dogs and never had to fight with one so much as this puppy so I sought out training videos. Within 12 hours my family was asking if I traded him in for a different puppy! I don't say "yes" I say "good" bc that's what's natural for me, but he gets so excited to hear he did good! I'm struggling still with him being ok with me leaving the room without waking up the whole house, but we are getting better, and the biting is nearly gone with distraction methods and treats. Thank you!

I follow a lot of dog trainers and McCann team is the best. They explain everything to a T. There are no questions as to why or when something is done left hanging. Other trainers say "do this" but without knowing why or when it can lead to bad behavior and faulty training.

Ugh yesss. I went to a dog obedience class just for the socialization. I didn’t need it for teaching her basic obedience. The trainers rewarded everything multiple treats for the smallest thing. And it caused a lot of problems and they got upset when you didn’t reward your dog. I refused a lot of the time because she didn’t do anything that she deserved a treat. It caused a lot of problems. I now and having to work her out of that mind set that she doesn’t need a treat. She can do it without a treat. It’s a long process but it is worth it. Don’t reach for the treat and then ask the dog to something. Ask the dog to do it then get the treat. That is a big thing I have had to learn out of since going to that class. I am also trying to get out of the habit of repeating myself and now expecting it on the first time. Only asking once and having her do it is important. I can do it with sit but struggling with lay down. She is stubborn with laying without a lure of a treat.

I’m happy to know that I’m doing this correct I started with a lure the first few times plus verbal then moved to hand signals with a treat in hand now I go back and forth between treat in hand and in pouch. She looks at me the whole time not the pouch. She KNOWS there are treats in it but I mix it up on her three tier value treats tier 1 kibble tier 2 cookie/ biscuit thing tier 3 meat thingy that’s high reward. I’ve had her 4 days and she’s picking things up insanely fast. 11 weeks old and she has a great grasp on sit. Down is also good when she isn’t in puppy mode so training sessions are 2-5 minutes or shorter depending on the time of day but we have multiple sessions. She has learned release for her toys and trade she has a phenomenal grasp on this one. Freeze is being worked on just introduced and come/ here is still being improved upon. I’ve had her 4 days 🤣 freeze doesn’t have a hand signal nor do release/ trade those are verbal. I have time to figure something out as she is going to be a working dog so a solid foundation are basics are a must without overlap on hand signals

I'm a new puppy owner, and I'm glad I found this channel. This video is so useful in that it visually shows the repetitions and results, displays various ways of incorrect trainer behavior, different corrections, and most importantly, the exact steps with timing to have success as a trainer. This video was 18 minutes long, but I felt that the entire time I was learning. Not only are you great dog trainers, you are effective trainer trainers as well! One question I do have is, can you use a clicker in conjunction with the conditioning word (yes!), and if so, when would you click it?
@perrymitchell7120
@perrymitchell7120 3 жыл бұрын
You want to use either the clicker or marker word. They are both the communicating that the puppy has done something right, just using different methods to communicate it. If you use both methods at the same time it will be confusing for the puppy. Kind of like two people talking at the same time.

This is why you should use some other uncommon sound either vocally or with a device like a clicker. Everytime your dog hears the "yes" command but is not rewarded that command loses it's power as your dog will slowly stop associating that word with reward.

Food motivation can have a lot to do with the breed of the dog My darling beagle was very easy to train with chicken but I'm finding my adorable pitbull mix really needs to be hungry if I'm training with food. She's eating after every nap so I use about one meal a day for a really good training. Today this amazing puppy leash walked really well all the way up the hill between our house and the transit stop after she ate She's 8 weeks old and very good but totally crazy good puppy

For my experience, I found it very effective by using a clicker instead of saying “yes” bc clicking seems faster as my reaction time is verbally slow 🤣 I also use hand gestures followed by using words. This video helped me with my dog to “leave it” even at the dog park!! He also now listens to me when I call him over instead of totally ignoring me LMAO :)) hope this helps? 💕 side note, I needed to get out every ounce of patience and resilience to do this LOL.

@@RoRo-py7cw That's great!! After this video yesterday I worked on the lay down thing but I kept saying "squish" LOL So, my dog will only be trained to listen to me bc my brain likes weird words! I could never clicker train bc I simply always have other junk in my hands and would be far too uncoordinated!! I don't say yes though, as hard as I tried it doesn't work, I end up saying "good boy" so it works for us! At least my dog no longer thinks his name is "no" which is obviously a win!! My sons gf's puppy is the same age as mine and ate a Macbook so I have recommended this channel to them now as well!

The problem is using treats in the first place, instead of adding treats ontop of the dogs regular meals, just take the food you would normally put in their bowel and give it too them during a training session and the training session ends once your dog has finished the allocated amount of food. This is not cruel, it's still getting fed the right amount but you are instilling the idea that there is no free lunch.

My dog is a smart ass trickster! She knows if I have the treat, and she likes to do what she wants as long as there’s nothing more exciting! I have been working a lot with her though, and things are getting much better!

Helpful as always :) Could you do a video about car anxiety. My puppy (lab 4 month) is great but as soon as we are going to the car she starts to go nuts. She pulls she barks und when she’s inside she is whining and walking from window to window because she’s so excited to go to the forrest or to dog training with her friends. Thanks for your help in advance!

One thing I saw Victoria (from It's me or the dog) do was cover the windows so overexcited dogs don't have too much stimulation in the car, then over time remove the coverings. Disclaimer: I'm not a professional trainer, this is just my personal idea One thing you might do is expose your pup to the car little by little. Get them near it and reward calm, get them in and reward calm, sit in the driver's seat, wait, get out and reward the calm, etc. Finally, take short drives starting and ending at home to desensitize to driving.

@@cre-k8-ive thanks :) yes we exposed her gradually the last 2 weeks and she is definitely calmer now. We only drove a couple of meters but that’s a big improvement. She stopped pulling before we got into the car and she is lying down quietly (with treats but better than not at all) in the back 🎉

Ive been struggling to keep my puppies focus so have been working on that. But at the same time I realised that while teaching him sit/down/stand I always pointed down when saying down and up when saying up, so he does it without a verbal command at all...
