I dont have any info on how to date the McCullochs, but the earliest models dont have a chain brake and the muffler is exposed. The later ones have the brake and the side cover covers the muffler. These are real powerful, fast cutting saws

Great video; I have a couple old right hand starts and you are right with the lineage of this saw; however, the 4-10 is the daddy of the Pro Mac 700. same 4.3 cubic inch 70cc power plant derived from the 1-10, 2-10 54cc models etc. If one digs into the literature they will see the 4-10, 5-10, 6-10 right hand starts use the same bore and stroke. The chainsaw collector's corner is a tad off on that. take care

As always love the history talk. Wow that thing cuts! I was talking to a friend back home and they live on a farm so you know how they are they never get rid of anything. Anyway we were talking about saws and he had about 6 or 7 saws he prefers to use but the one he talked about the most and seemed to really like was the Pro Mac 700. It almost sounds like a ported saw very surprised how good that saw cut.
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea91562 жыл бұрын
The Pro Mac 700's are light, very powerful, and easy to work on also. Their are not a lot of them around, as they were used in both commercial logging and heavy duty firewood processing, and were just used up. If I just had only one saw, the Mac 700 would be the one. I have used mine with a 32 inch bar, and the saw handles it just fine, but the tree's I have are smaller, and even the 28" bar is more than needed, but the saw has perfect balance with that combination, so that is what I use.

Wow, that old girl rips. I just picked a Promac 700 up that I'm replacing the cylinder and piston on. Can't wait to get into it. Did you do any porting to yours and any thing to look out for with these saws?
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea91563 жыл бұрын
My 700 is completely stock. They are just real performers. I am not aware of any problems common to that series of saws, as the forerunners were made quite a few years before the 700, and any problems were corrected if any before this 700 was released. Good find !

The 700 did come with a chainbrake thats one off a slightly older saw.
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea91568 ай бұрын
The first models of the Pro Mac 700 did not have a chain brake. I have some original brochures that show it without it. It wasn't long though, that the saws were modified to come with one.
@ericfuller63268 ай бұрын
I think you might be right but maybe wrong if you consider the 7-10 the early 700. Because by the end of the 7-10 it had the brake that didn’t cover the muffler and the 700 was a continuation of that. My 7-10 has that cover my promac 55 and 60 as well my early 81 too has no brake.

All no brakes
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea91568 ай бұрын
I don't have a 7-10, but I know for sure my PM700 is original with no brake. I am the second owner, and the saw when received is exactly the way it came new. My original parts book also shows no brake on the early production models. My PM 55 also has no brake, as does my SP 80. My PM 800 parts saw has a chain brake on it though. It is interesting how the saws evolved.

Hello again Sir, now that I bought a Mcculloch Mac 140. Will start looking for a Pro Mac 700. This can become habit forming 😁. I like only the vintage chainsaws and made in USA over anything Chinese or foreign made and I seem to gravitate to the Mcculloch's. Also, thank you for answering a previous question on that 140 that I bought. Another question if I may ask? What are your thoughts of the Mcculloch 1-42 ? Are they difficult to repair or find parts ? Or should I just stay away from this model ?
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea91563 жыл бұрын
The Mac 1-42 was a common saw in its day, and they made the same basic model for many years, just changing the model number , like 1-52 etc. They are straight forward to work on, and parts availability is OK. Unless it has been abused, most of these and similar models dont require much in repairs. If you find a PRO MAC 700, you will probably have to pay a fair amount to get it. They were a huge seller for the commercial market, and were mostly used up. So the ones that are left can be real beaters, so be careful. There are still some nice ones out there, but usually expensive. They are real performers!

The Pro Mac 700's are hard to find, as they were used in commercial service a lot and simply used up. As you can see, they are a real performer. If you get lucky and find one, you will be impressed with it's performance.

Had my ProMac 700 30 plus yrs ,bought as reconditioned ,I hold the pull start when stopping the engine because it pulls back on the starter as the engine stops which tugs on the rope ,saves the pull cord ?? My Stihl saws dont do that
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea91562 жыл бұрын
Centrifugal force keeps the starter dogs away from the starter cup when the saw is running, but fall back and catch as the engine speed drops. Pulling out the starter rope is done to prevent damage to the starter mechanism and makes the rope last longer. One of my old Stihl's does the same thing, but the newer ones have a different starter mechanism that prevents it from happening.

There is no disputing this guy must be able to file a chain...they just do not drop through a log much faster than that.....period.
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea91563 жыл бұрын
There are many ways to sharpen a chain, but the fast and simple way I do it is with a PHERD file tool. I have two of them, one for 3/8 and 404" and the other for 3/8" low profile chain.These tools are for round tooth chain, as that is all I use.The PHERD file tool cuts both the tooth and the raker at the same time. Most of these are branded Stihl, and are sold at the dealers for about $45. Since I am not a pro logger, and dont use square cut chain, this system works very fast and efficiently, and you can take it with you. Watch my older video (How I Sharpen My Chainsaw Chains-Works For Me) and you can see the process. My saws cut great, so useing this tool does work great ! Thanks for watching.
