The thing is Paul, not everybody wants a supercar which will burst their eardrums and bash their spines. I understand thats what you like but allot of owners want their supercar to be comfortable, refined and overall nice to drive. You don't need to have incredibly stiff suspension and an extremely loud exhaust system to have fun. I drove a 650S last year and it was more comfortable than my own car and it didn't feel any less engaging than than a 997 GT3 RS that I also drove. Iv just seen the Carfection review and he said that its a supercar for people who love to drive and not just to show off.

I don't feel like the 720s is suppose to be all the drama that they wanted. I believe McLaren did it correctly played it smart as they have the comfort orientated and more street friendly than lights your hair on fire for fun, to cover a broader range of customers in their line up, and that leaves room for many surprises and improvements for the LT. 750LT anyone?
@Kaisuke9717 жыл бұрын
The 720S is now exactly what the MP4-12C was back in 2011. But because there were the P1 and the LT in between i guess people have forgotten about the 12 C?
@HG504X7 жыл бұрын
Ung Tran The 12C was forgotten because it was slightly boring compared to the 458 and because they released the 650S very shortly after, which overshadowed the 12C because it made up for the 12C's shortcomings. Mclaren will probably release a 720S spider next then an 720S GT3 car and then the 750LT and numerous MSO Editions like a "777 HS" much further down the line.
@keven10114127 жыл бұрын
Hassan 504 kaisuke971, very true. They are going the same path as they did years ago, but it's kinda working for them as sales are increasing a lot and remember, the 650s is kinda boring compared to the Ferraris and Lamborghinis as well, but don't worry, we'll have the 750LT soon to up that drama. That was kinda the problem with the 12C as well as it didn't have the dramatic variant. Fingers crossed the LT will be the redemption card even though there's not really anything wrong with the 720s as that what it was kinda made for(be the livable street version of the soon to come track monster), and in my eyes it looks good and suppose to be more for cruising, capable of very very high speeds and if you take it to a track it won't fall on it's face, and look good to show off.

This is fair. Ferrari tried to do the same thing with the 488 GTB.

I agree Tran, the 720 does everything so well except the drama factor. I feel like this car is for everyday supercar use if you wanted too, similar to the 911 Turbo. It gets a 10/10 on every factor except for drama but thats what McLaren wanted, and what they have done with previous generations. The drama cars will come later.

I think they're trying to say that too many compromises have been made to make the car appeal to as many people as possible, and as a result of that it's not quite perfect in the areas that a supercar should do well. For example, using so much glass is probably good for sound insulation for a more refined driving experience, but it means that you can't hear the sound of the exhaust as well as on the Huracan, for example.

This car is just like the Mclaren MP4-12C. Clarkson said about the 12C: "The 12C is made in a laboratory, Mclaren doesn't know the word fun". Too good but it lacks of soul. Even the Huracan who's the Lamborghini who lacks the most of soul on the brand does have more soul than the 720S. It's perfectably understandable.
@OfficialRoman7 жыл бұрын
Have you driven the 12C, Huracan, and 720S to know which has soul and which doesn't?
@MarcoTav187 жыл бұрын
This is bullshit. You people that love such bullshit narrative talk like this is a car designed and conceived by some sort of emotionless beings that just see numbers. There are people that worked in this project. This is the work of years of a lot of people that surely were excited about it, and that more than surely put all of their hard work and emotion in making it. That alone makes it exciting and most definitely not lacking a soul to me.
@TobRacer7 жыл бұрын
No. But let me explain you why I've got these feelings about these cars. Automotive journalist like Sutcliffe, Harris, Catchpole, Bovingdon and Clarkson are the best people to translate how a car drives and how much emotion they feel when they drive a brand new car. Paul SOL did a very good job there, he managed to give me lots of impressions about the 720S. He told us through his video how the car accelerate and stop. How it sound, how it looks, how it's made, etc. Look at MrJWW how much he doesn't look convinced ! That face means a lot. And this man does know an awful lot about cars and how much emotions he can get from their cars. Soul on cars depends also a lot on the looks, on how it's made and the sound of the car. The 720S does sound a lot better than a 488 GTB clearly, but it's not good enough as it's not loud and the engine isn't "furious". The 488 is gorgeous to look at, even if it doesn't sound very good it does have a lot of soul. Well it's not a very good comparaison cause every Ferraris have so much soul, the entire brand is legendary and they are one of the best brand in the world to create cars with passion, love and put soul in it. Mclaren isn't that good to create cars with soul, only the F1, P1, 675LT and 540C/570S does have soul. After all, it's just a feeling and my own opinion. It doesn't mean because a car doesn't have soul it's certainly a bad car. I hope you understand, cause I admit it's a little complicated. (English isn't my native langage)
@MarcoTav187 жыл бұрын
Anticapitalista Anticapitalista Hey, thanks for taking the time to answer! English isn't my native language either. I'm sorry if I was a bit agressive, I shouldn't have been. On the topic of soul I agree it is complicated. Being a feeling, and as such a highly subjective topic it can't be other way. I personally find all the cars being mentioned here all fantastic and very exciting (including this 720S). McLarens, to my liking, have picked up on beauty ever since the 650S and the P1 and perhaps that's the reason my opinion is tilted the way it is, I really like this cars and the 720S most of them all. I also am one that finds a lot of excitement in numbers as well, so there's that!

Marco spot bang on... i said this time and time again, over and over again defending my mp4 ownership and rawness/soul to the youtube world of ignorant comments and regurgitated NONSENSE... its tiresome i have owned and own tons of supercars, the mclaren while maybe not ferrari v 12 electrifying in my FF/F12 with the inconel sports exhaust it was a freaking animal, sounded very exotic for a TT platform (unlike 911 turbo and others) and was a raw animal driven full out! people need to experience and own/live with to assess these things.. ps anticapitalista, great reply and i respect it
@supercarsofnzltd22647 жыл бұрын
Paul, thanks for putting this up so quickly! I think I can sum something up for you. I've owned a MP4 12C, 650S & now a 675LT Spider. When I went from the 650S to the 675LT, I was impressed but it wasn't until I had a day at the track that the car actually BLEW my MIND! I think, possibly if you'd had a chance to take the 720S onto a track in Sport or Track modes and also played with the drift option, you'd probably find the car reaches that differentiating level you'd hoped for. Only then can you understand what McLaren has traditionally been all about - fastest times, form meeting function and clean driving lines rather than rear end waggle. The latter is now starting to be offered though with the drift option. Jump at the chance to try that out on track and put another vlog up on that with the outcome. I bet you'll have a BIG smile on. Cheers and keep up the good work.

Many people have attempted to unravel what makes a car fun to drive, most notably Jason at Engineering Explained: 1. Agility and Nimbleness 2. Steering 3. Predictability and Controlability 4. Approachable Limit 5. G-forces If you have a car that is too competent, you never get near it's limit = no fun.

Listen, when the mp4-12c came out everybody had the same impressions. The car was mind bendingly quick but lacked the drama and connection. It wasnt until the LT version we fully realized where Mclaren stood as a brand and how capable the same said mp4-12c chassis was. Its obvious no car manufacture will ever make a track verion as a new series. But, seeing that this is being called the successor to the 650s, i cant begin to imagine what the capabilities are when they start making improvments.

Nice review, the 720s is an awesome super fast car. But I think there is one big problem with all the new supercars. The question is, how long can you increase the power of a car? McLaren does upgrade their cars in such high steps, what will they do in 5 years? Should every Mclaren then have 1000 hp? I think this car is so damn fast, that it is hardly extendable. But when you don't bring the car to its limits, it is boring. So what is the point of making the cars so incredible fast that nobody really can bring them to their limits, without seriously risking their life. Clarkson was right in his review of the F12, where he said, that he wished the car would be a little bit slower. I think at some point you have to stop making the cars quicker. But let us say the supercar companys stop making their cars faster and only perfect their cars. Most of the modern supercars are already so perfect and have such a good practicality, that they would completely lose the drama and emotional factor and a bit of their soul. So there is a little bit of a dilemma. I'm really anxious about the supercars that will come in the next 5-10 years

Same stuff people brought up with the 12C, and the 650S - and for good reason. It's the middle-of-the-road car. It's insanely fast, but it's also a supercar that you can actually use. It has a surprising amount of cargo capacity, it rides well, maybe even a bit understated. That's the point. But when you put it in track mode and he after it, it's among the fastest cars in the world. That's McLaren. Honestly though, you gotta wonder how they're gonna pull off another 675LT level jump with this insane car as a base. I mean, the 650S was quick, but the 720S is absolutely ridiculous.

sounds pretty good. Btw, about not 'feeling' the car probably because McLaren wanted to please everyone, comfortable/daily capability and high performing/track focused car. Same problem problem with new nsx. High expectation to the LT version.
@stephenwalker88247 жыл бұрын
obviously we all want the '720lt' but also consider a track pack version on the S. Just brought it out for sports serious and might be the ideal spec as a bit less GT but not as extreme and expensive as LT.

i totally agree, even though i haven't driven the car, the video and the looks alone gives me this feel, and it's just how McLaren have been since they started with the 12c, almost too sensible, all bar the 675 and probably the 570, that's how I look at McLarens...

I couldn't help think of the F40 when watching all four of your reviews on the 720s . The McLaren is ballistically fast and almost next level in terms of speed , braking etc but you all say it lacks emotion and is almost "too good" whereas the F40 has big panel gaps , not the best build quality , not particularly comfortable but it oozes emotion and raw driving appeal. It seems to me the McLaren is too clinical whereas the F40 is s raw visceral experience ! It's like the 720s is a car you admire and appreciate but the F40 ( and a lot of older not so perfect supercars ) is a car you fall in love with :)

When the original Acura NSX came out, reviewers said the same thing about it. Everything works, too perfect, no soul.

Good vid. I wonder what all you guys would think of the new NSX.

It's great that you guys are very honest, brilliant honest down to earth review. Hopefully we'll start getting Supercars to review on our channel also. Love the vid and love the Channel follow both you and Seb.

Thx for the insight of the 720. Remarkable you compare the 720 in speed and emotion/feeling to a Tesla. Insane speed but no smile/drama... Tomorrow driving my Tesla again (to work) and looking forward to start the F430 in the weekend, makes me smile again :-)

This feels like seen through glass' review of the BMW M3. And on the subject of Seen through glass... you can gel with a 540c and not this 720s?

why are you comparing the 675LT to the 720S? there's no point in comparing both, LT's the hardcore track version of the 650S, a comfortable GT car. why not wait till the LT version of the 720S to be released, then we compare that to the LT?

This sounds like all the comments that were made about the 12C when it first came out... Incredible competent but lacking in the emotional connection. Has Mclaren taken a step backwards?

This is what we want. Everyone will say the cars great, which is it but to able to critically criticise such a new car when so many won't is what I love. Mclaren won't like it but too many KZbinrs just suck ass at any new car launch. Great to know what you ACTUALLY think of it!

720S is just amazing & it's everything: a fast car, a luxury car, confortable or harsh... And the price is great, McLaren is killing the game.

another problem I see is: you get the occasion (in general with mclarens), that it is a class lower, than it's actually is. I always see it on the same level like the Huracan, 488. But in reality it's more on the level of Aventador/812superfast. And speedwise it seems to be going way over that.

720s. Finally, thanks, an intimate picture of the car. People had too much of a hard on to show it I think. You know what I mean? I think the most important thing is the sexy eyes. Better than any eyes on the road. (Headlights)

I've watched a few reviews now, and what is interesting to me is that the pro car reviewers for the big magazines are all salivating at how good it is, but the 4 youtube guys, who I have just watched drive around europe having fun for a week in their own supercars, all look beyond the performance itself and find it lacks that spark that makes a car special (a fault that was eventually admitted about the 12C by the mainstream press). In reality, this is a car that competes with the 911 turbo s, not the 458 and huracan (in terms of what it is intended to do), and I am still not sure if you would really see the £80K + worth of benefit it costs over the porsche. A brilliant car, and most likely the finest daily driver of them all, In a garage where you had access to other cars for the fun part of the supercar experience, it should probably be top of the purchase list.
