The F1 is truly a amazing car. It came out in 1993, it can do over 240MPH, 0-60 in 3.1, and a prototype did the nurburgringin 7:11. With modern tires it could probably get into the high 2s range for 0-60 and possibly even do a sub 7 minute lap. It took 16 years for a car to beat it around the nurburgring and it took 13 years for its top speed to be beaten. It is still a hypercar today which shows how bat shit insane it was in 1993. It is truly one of the best cars ever.

Not really, it's buildquality is vastly inferior to the cars after it. And compared to other brands, you can get better for same amount of money. Porsche 997 Gen 2 Turbo S is faster and cheaper, not to mention more reliable. Fun fact: The Mule for the MP4/12C was a Ferrari 360.

Fun fact. Mclaren F1 used the Honda Nsx as a benchmark. Gordon Murray the designer owned one and even approached Honda to make an engine for the F1 as Mclaren were using Honda power in F1 and we're dominant at the time Look it up . Quite interesting

You forgot to tell before Mclaren resort to using BMW engine, chief engineer Gordon Murray was really keen on using Honda's engine because he was so impressed by Honda NSX and during the time Mclaren Formula 1 team were also using Honda motor. Hr went to Honda's Tochigi Research Center on two occasions to persuade them to build for the McLaren F1 a 4.5 litre V10 or V12. But in the end he could not convince them to do it, and the McLaren F1 ended up equipped with a BMW engine

Miguel Garcia The reason they won't do it because Japan was in the bubble era economy and when it burst it makes manufacturer trimmed down costs and for that reason Honda politely refused the request. Beside Honda NSX has excellent record in national and Asian level series. Their Le Mans effort was spearheaded by all Japanese team, they are not used to Le Mans and had language barrier. Beside Honda engine powered McLaren F1 in the past with a success that Modern Mercedes hasn't yet achieved.

He and (1964 F1 World Champion) Denny Hulme won Driver To Europe scholarships from NZ motor racing clubs to fund their opportunity. Fellow kiwi Chris Amon joined them later and ended up racing for Ferrari in F1. Amon and McLaren won Le Mans together in a Ford GT40.

But the best day was definitly when I saw McLaren 720S right in front of the office. At that time, it didn't had any badges and it was in black-white-blue camouflage livery to hide details, but you only needed one second to know - it must be new McLaren. It mirrored there NSX rear mid engine layout, and aspirations. Polly at the time, Honda was going against the grain making an affordable sports car (exotic?), what would people say if they help design one of the most expensive exotic sports cars.

At the time Honda engine McLaren team dominated F1 racing. It was a natural fit to team up with Honda for the street car. Unfortunately Honda management declined, it would be epic if Honda supplied a 6 liter VTEC V12 Formula One based engine for the legendary F1.

But the GT engine is still a Ford designed and built engine. I think the point being made is that they didn't develop or build their own engine. But still so what because McLaren was using Honda V10 engines in their Formula One race cars at the time. McLaren was always a race car chassis company, they were always using other manufacturers engines. Even when they started putting their "own" engines in the 570s, it was a Nissan based engine designed for an Indy team that they bought the rights to and had Ricardo build for them. They have never really been a power-train development company but man they can build an awesome car.

Which only happend because Honda dind't want to make a 4.5 V10/V12 for them. Isuzu Motors then stepped up and offered to do it, but Mclaren declined, as they wanted a engine with a racing pedigree. Lastly due to the Mclaren F1's design, you could have thrown any engine into it, and it still would have been wonderfull, simply due to how good the rest of the car was designed and tested. Fun fact: The V8's they currently use for their cars, is actully originally from NIssan and the R390 GT1(Ofcourse heavly revised).
