This reminds me of the TRUE full-size American cars of a couple generations ago, when the largest models were 18 to 19 feet--and even more--long. And weighed about 2-and-a-half to THREE tons. Them were the days!

The rollover is the BEST! It was Hollywood's first cannon-assisted rollover; ( the device became known as the McQ cannon). When stuntman Hal Needham rehearsed the stunt it nearly killed him; leaving him hospitalized with a broken back and ribs and a punctured lung! Another stuntman, Gary McLarty had to do the rollover in the movie.

Normally, what happens is the water gets into the engine and the electrical system and the car won't start again. Yet this is a bit of escapism, three old school American cars on a beach and it's worth watchiing for the chase alone.

@@Glenn1967ful Cars from that era would get water into their distributor caps which is why GM and small block Chryslers have their distributors located between the carburetor and the firewall which is the best placement for staying dry. Also don't forget these are stunt cars and they knew well in advance they were going to do this scene so waterproofing distributor caps should not be ruled out nor should the possibility these scenes may have been done over and over dur to cars stalling out which may or may not have happened. We'll never know.

What I really like about this film is seeing streets full of full sized American cars with only the odd Beetle to represent imports. At the time in England a Rover 2000, with a two litre four cylinder engine, was one of our biggest cars, but most people had to make do with noisy, basic 1.3 litre cars like the Austin 1300. Seeing cars like the ones in Mc Q always put a smile on my face.

I have to admit. This is my ultimate favorite John Wayne movie. His previous movies would be Westerns so he rode a horse, or war movies where he'd be on a jeep, tank, or other armored military vehicle. To see him drive a car chasing villains was absolutely cool.

First on-screen use of a cannon roll. Hal Needham was supposed to have don the gag, but he suffered a spinal fracture testing the gag when he invented it - over-estimated the powder needed and it threw the car something like six or seven feet in the air. Also - the car that crashes through the piling? The other pilings were real; that one was a balsa wood dummy that was also cut almost all the way through. Hitting one of th real ones would have put that car out of the chase. And, as it happens, the tide was higher than they realised, and the car began hydroplaning at JUST the wrong point; he barely got it under control in time to hit the right one. ======================= I remember a TV special promoting the film at the time, and the driver of the stunt car, before doing the gag, saying "...and then I hit the brakes, get it sideways, push the button and go flippity-flop down the beach."

seems like I remember reading an article when the movie was made ( basically the release) that the Impala had to be reinforced to hold it together for that final shot .. there were a lot of dramatic movie chase scenes to try to out do the Bullitt chase ( not knocking the Impala, btw) In the French Connection, apparently wrecked a few cars they weren't supposed to ( those that were supposedly just parked there) and left that in the movie

But....The modern dodge hellcat has 700 horsepower.... While they are somewhat rare 1200 horsepower mustangs are sold today, a more typical mustang GT and Camaro have 450 horsepower, Corvettes have 600ish horsepower. There is plenty of faults with modern cars but in terms of engine output I feel we have come back from the dark days of the 70's and then some.

McQ was a very enjoyable film, I loved the way how it finished with a brutal example of car beach rage, and the shoot out at the end was good. The Mac 10 machine gun with the silencer was a seriously cool with firepower to match when John Wayne used it. The actor who played the baddie was great in this, I cannot remember his name but in most films I saw him in, he was always playing baddies, it’s a shame that he passed away, R.I.P and John Wayne too. Most probably don’t rate this film but I really enjoyed it. 👍🏾.

@promixcuous Just the stunt at 1:19 where Wayne's Mopar (Plymouth?) does a nose plant after jumping a sand berm. Holy mackerel, that was enough to firmly plant one's tonsils on the steering wheel with a shower of teeth falling to the floor mat. We don't need no stinkin' shoulder belts... it's the 70s! God help me, I loved that movie growing up; Wayne standing tall. Damn, does anyone even come close today? Eastwood maybe. Gran Torino was a great flick, but not comparing here.

Funny if you notice- whenever they hit the surf, the Plymouth hydroplanes but the Chevy and the Cad just plow right through!

That '69 Plymouth is a good 500 lbs. lighter than the Chevy and a whopping half-ton lighter than the Caddy. Consider that plus the fact that most police-issue Plymouths came with high-compression 383 cubic-inch big-blocks under the hood vs. the low-compression, smog-controlled 350 / 400 smallblock in the Chev and the torquey but low-revving low-compression Caddy motor. Plus Mopar's famed torsion bar suspension. On dry pavement it wouldn't even be a contest. The Plymouth would eat them.

Cars today would probably not handle this chase and the SUVs are just station wagons with big gnarly tires. How would modern cars handle the sea water with all the electronics. The cinema photography of this chase was fantastic. I wonder how fast commercially available drones can fly?

I'm English, Projectno, but I'm old enough to remember when American cars were far better than junk like Morris Marinas and Vauxhall Vivas we had in England and cost about the same while offering one hell of a lot more. 1.3 litres or 6 litres, tell me what you would sooner have at the time.

Goof. At the end of the chase, the Cadillac stops and parks facing the ocean. But when John Wayne and Diana Mauldur get off their Plymouth, the Cadillac is already facing the opposite direction. Is that sloppy direction or just great stunt driving?

John Wayne was offered but turned down the role of Dirty Harry. That is why he made this film, it is completely underrated. John Wayne made the best police movies there has ever been or ever will be. They beat Clint Eastwood's performance by at least a mile easy. This movie McQ and his next police movie and film of his career Brannigan proves it easily. I like the appearance of the MAC-10 submachine gun. McQ was really the movie to introduce it to the general public and created a demand for it.
