The rollover is the BEST! It was Hollywood's first cannon-assisted rollover; ( the device became known as the McQ cannon). When stuntman Hal Needham rehearsed the stunt it nearly killed him; leaving him hospitalized with a broken back and ribs and a punctured lung! Another stuntman, Gary McLarty had to do the rollover in the movie.

Normally, what happens is the water gets into the engine and the electrical system and the car won't start again. Yet this is a bit of escapism, three old school American cars on a beach and it's worth watchiing for the chase alone.

@@Glenn1967ful Cars from that era would get water into their distributor caps which is why GM and small block Chryslers have their distributors located between the carburetor and the firewall which is the best placement for staying dry. Also don't forget these are stunt cars and they knew well in advance they were going to do this scene so waterproofing distributor caps should not be ruled out nor should the possibility these scenes may have been done over and over dur to cars stalling out which may or may not have happened. What I really like about this film is seeing streets full of full sized American cars with only the odd Beetle to represent imports. At the time in England a Rover 2000, with a two litre four cylinder engine, was one of our biggest cars, but most people had to make do with noisy, basic 1.3 litre cars like the Austin 1300. Seeing cars like the ones in Mc Q always put a smile on my face.

First on-screen use of a cannon roll. Hal Needham was supposed to have don the gag, but he suffered a spinal fracture testing the gag when he invented it - over-estimated the powder needed and it threw the car something like six or seven feet in the air. Also - the car that crashes through the piling? The other pilings were real; that one was a balsa wood dummy that was also cut almost all the way through. Hitting one of th real ones would have put that car out of the chase. And, as it happens, the tide was higher than they realised, and the car began hydroplaning at JUST the wrong point; he barely got it under control in time to hit the right one. ======================= I remember a TV special promoting the film at the time, and the driver of the stunt car, before doing the gag, saying "...and then I hit the brakes, get it sideways, push the button and go flippity-flop down the beach."

That '69 Plymouth is a good 500 lbs. lighter than the Chevy and a whopping half-ton lighter than the Caddy. Consider that plus the fact that most police-issue Plymouths came with high-compression 383 cubic-inch big-blocks under the hood vs. the low-compression, smog-controlled 350 / 400 smallblock in the Chev and the torquey but low-revving low-compression Caddy motor. Plus Mopar's famed torsion bar suspension. On dry pavement it wouldn't even be a contest. The Plymouth would eat them.

John Wayne was offered but turned down the role of Dirty Harry. That is why he made this film, it is completely underrated. John Wayne made the best police movies there has ever been or ever will be. They beat Clint Eastwood's performance by at least a mile easy. This movie McQ and his next police movie and film of his career Brannigan proves it easily. I like the appearance of the MAC-10 submachine gun. McQ was really the movie to introduce it to the general public and created a demand for it.
