It's the greatest tool of control in the history of mankind. Just look at the smartphone zombies that wake up and go to sleep with their phones. I can imagine going back to life without exposure to the internet. Cutting out social media isn't a big issue. I only use KZbin and I can feel I've reached the final stages of giving a shit about it. It's all repetitive content, it's mostly a copy of a copy and I'm just bored with it. There's so much to learn, discover and be excited about in books, physical media (dvd's/blurays etc) without having to listen to some twat explaining the meaning or the ending of every single book or movie. It's become an insufferable stew of rehashed content and I'm starting to back away from it. The reward of discovering a mindblowing book with an unknown plot is priceless. My first favourite book was The Worst Witch. A protagonist who is INCREDIBLY bad at magic, attending a school of magic. Her tenacity and compassion made me fall in love with her (literally, 6-7yo me ABSOLUTELY had a crush on a fictional character that translated to a classmate that looked similar) A good character, with flaws. In a young childrens book. (half of the pages are illustrations, so targeted to VERY early readers) In my early teens I read Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey. The protagonist is a young woman living in her ancestral home as a servant after it was invaded and her family murdered (not a spoiler, it's literally in the opening of the book) An INCREDIBLY strong woman who uses people, commits murder and is TERRIFIED of everything (bc of her circumstances) A character with quite obvious mental health issues and rather deep flaws was still an INCREDIBLY impactful protagonist for me (Lessa) From Xena to Buffy to Ellen Ripley to Sarah Connor and on (Starbuck from the modern Battlestar Galactica. An example of how you CAN "bring diversity" and make it actually blood work. Cara Thrace was more than just ladybits, dammit!) "Strong female characters" are quite literally my favourite things ever... My favourite from XMen was Rogue (followed by Gambit, but still... and I still have a kink for a southern belle accent) I always preferred Skully to Mulder and I even prefer to play videogames as a female character (if I'm gonna stare at a butt... I'd rather it were a girl) Why do they fuck it up so bad, when their core audience have ALWAYS been some of the most progressive and nonconformist people. You have to TRY and make these themes suck to succeed at it as well as they have. Want a great example of black representation in a Marvel show that is both authentic AND filled with great characters? Watch Luke Cage. They've LITERALLY already done it. So how did they forget?

I would argue that the lack of character arcs is the "performative diversity" that you seek. Hollywood (and Disney especially) has made the rule that nobody under the DEI protective umbrella can be portrayed with any negative attributes. If a character can't have any downs, then there are no ups to achieve. I don't have to watch this movie to know that the marvel girls are perfect, and the villain is simply misunderstood and they'll all be besties at the end. They literally can't write it any other way (Although the lack of skill present in modern day Hollywood writers is definitely worth discussion. Modern Hollywood writers and directors are simply awful on so many levels that even if not hampered by politics, films are mid at best).
@gregowen2022 Жыл бұрын
You are correct, they are handling the characters with kid gloves and that’s why they are bland. I saw wish last night and the worst part of the movie is the heroine. They don’t want to make her a girl boss, but also scared to show weakness, so she’s just…. There.

I work from home now, but am not sure I have a good spot for it, but that is a badass desk if I were to get one. 2. I think a point you sort of touched on, but could stand amplification, is the practice I've heard Little Platoon refer to as "reverse gatekeeping." It's where a group/element claims to be a fan of an IP, and demands inclusion/representation. They get in because hey inclusion ftw amirite? Then they push out, or otherwise alienate existing fans by advancing a new narrative/turn that turns off foundational fans in favor of updates for "modern audiences." The IP falls flat commercially, the new group plays it off as "manbabies cry why do they care so much anyway" and move along to something else. But now the IP is trashed, and they're onto something else to either ruin, or be outraged by, thus starting the cycle again.

I think another more insidious part of the message is that it's not just that inserting it in a movie or story sucks, but also that if you truly believe it, it effects your ability to tell a basic story as well.

I don’t think it’s so much that they didn’t write for The Message, as evidenced by stuff like “use Black Girl Magic” to fly. It seems like instead most of it got stripped out on the editing floor, but after doing so there wasn’t any writing left to drive any character arcs.

The "blame men" thing doesn't just bug me as a man, but also as an artist. Simply put; you'll never grow as a person if you play the blame game every time you fail. That's something journalists need to figure out, but they won't. They literally get paid to shift blame and make sexist clickbait-y articles. Thankfully, that also gives you content to monetize. That's the only silver lining I can see here.

Yeah that has been a question on my mind for quite a while. Disney/Marvel is a company that is making a product that people mock and don't want. And then the CUSTOMERS are shamed? How about the company for making something no one wants? Here's a tip, Disney: We're not going to want something just because YOU want us to want it.
@gregowen2022 Жыл бұрын
Right? It's pretty crazy hubris to blame the customer for not wanting to buy something. Really lets you know they think they own us and we owe them patronage

For the final cut of the movie they cut it down to 88 minutes. I think some of the DEI material is probably on the cutting room floor. That's probably another reason why the director left to start another movie before The Marvels finished the final editing.

Great video, as always! I love your takes on current media. Your comments give me hope because they're so, (dare I say it), normal. Reasoned and well thought-out. PS: It's my understanding that 62% of the initial audience for this latest MCU cash grab was men. So, the agenda-driven critics who claim men are the problem need to examine the FACT that without men, this film would've bombed harder. It's like the WNBA - it's WOMEN that aren't coming to see these films. SUPERHERO movies have always been more accepted by men as a genre.
@gregowen2022 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. They said they didn’t want or need male audiences. Ok, well here you go. Oh wait, even the female audiences don’t want this kind of movie. You love to see it

I'm a grown women and everybody I know including me went to see Barbie. None of us got what we wanted but they did throw us a couple things in the movie. I saw it with my mom. I mean I wish they had made the whole thing for normal women instead of a couple scraps in it. I'm sorry I'm going on a long tangent just to say women and little girls want girly things. Theyre pandering to that one girl in high school who thinks she's better then everybody else because she acts like a dude. Nobody wants to be that girl, they started with just the akward girl as representation and thats fine we all feels not confident but they thought the logical conclusion to that was act like a man. Feminist really just hate women. Edit:Now to be fair I'm a Christian so a lot of stuff I cant get behind anyways but I know that some of this really is that simple.

Men won’t watch strong diverse women as action stars??? Really??? Two simple words: Kill Bill. Holds up after a dozen watchings. All the action and motivation and even the “hero’s journey” are all carried by strong and diverse women for female motives. A woman even co-wrote it. The only men in the film don’t even appear until the second movie. The first male gets ten minutes to show how shitty his life is and dies without a fight while a half-blind woman mocks him. The titular male gets 13 minutes at the end of the film (to be a condescending asshole) and talk about comic books and then HE dies in a 50-second fight scene that takes place seated at a table in a chair. And Kill Bill kicks ass as a movie and made a fortune.

Yeah that whole "marvel spotlight", you don't need to watch this for later movies... Died by the time Agatha came along. And yeah, Hollyweird seems to be going through a very ODD recreation of the late 60 early 70's movies... It's just they don't recognize it.

You say theres no woke stuff in the marvels, yet they did a lot of rewrites, reshoots, and the movies is strangely short..... I dont think i need much more proof than that to believe they cut as much woke stuff out of the movie as they possibly could. The issue is the whole concept of the movie itself is drippin with woke and blatently motivated by that ideology. They would have to go back to square one, rewrite and reshoot the entire movie with a different frame of mind to get rid of that aspect.

A note on the "why do you care?" question is that it's more than caring about something you liked being high quality. Why do you expect high quality? Because you've seen high quality from Disney before. Numerous times. They were once the apex of western animation, from _The Little Mermaid_ to approximately _Lilo and Stitch,_ maybe even beyond that. The question of "why do you care so much about Disney movies being bad?" could just as easily be read as "why do you care that your alcoholic friend fell off the wagon?" Because we don't want our friend to die, and if they relapse into destructive habits, that can cause their health to deteriorate catastrophically, as has been exceptionally well-documented. "Why do you care?" is an attempt to recontextualize concern and compassion into a destructive vice. Right back at ya', Disney. To quote the end of the song The Outsider, "if you choose to pull the trigger, should your drama prove sincere, do it somewhere far away from here." I _don't_ care. Not anymore. I was never a Disney guy beyond liking a few movies. I don't do brand loyalty. I have a very mercenary approach to media: you give me what I want, and I give you what you want, with each transaction operating on a case by case basis. Just ask the Gundam franchise, wherein I pride myself on not mincing my words if I find some, most, or all of a series to be painfully idiotic. I've seen more franchises burn to the ground than I care to count. I've come to expect it, even from new and seemingly promising things that I like today. And when they all come tumbling down, it's less and less tragic each time. I let those expectations similarly guide my expectations when interacting with people, as it's only a matter of time before they all reveal what they're _really_ like...

I just binged a couple of videos of yours so I'm hoping I'm actually commenting on the correct one where you mentioned planning to make a video about strong female characters in movies/shows :D Suggestions for the strong female characters video: - Ripley from the Alien franchise - Sarah Conner from the Terminator franchise - Arcane has about 50% female characters and the 2 most important ones are female. Furthermore the show is very diverse even to the point of sounding woke on paper but everyone (including me) loves it because that's not the focus of the show. Seriously if you haven't seen it go watch it because it's amazing! - Mad Max: fury road had Furiosa - Game of Thrones was full of great, strong/smart/powerful female characters (and even when the show went downhill in the later seasons nobody blamed gender, race or sexuality) - Avatar the last Airbender has very powerful and interesting female characters - X-men also has some great female characters Picking some non-western media (which is popular in the west): - Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood has plenty of interesting and strong female characters - Jujutsu Kaisen - Chainsaw Man - Attack on Titan - Ghost in the Shell Honorable mentions: Hunger Games, Black Widow, Lara Croft, Batman franchise (Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Batgirl), Xena, Buffy, Kill Bill, Mulan (original, haven't watched the remake), Leela from Futurama, the Expanse, ... And since I'm a fan of action movies/shows I will note that most of the characters/movies/shows/franchises that I mention not only contain interesting female characters, but actually strong women. Some are physically very strong (sometimes even the strongest character in the story), sometimes mentally (e.g. Ripley and Sarah Conner), sometimes through cunning (Olenna Tyrell from GoT) and sometimes in a more indirect way due to their position/the power they command (Cersei/Daenerys from GoT), but most of the examples in my list have participated in physical conflict (and more often than not beat physically stronger opponents) and I don't think any of them is really hated by the fans (at the very least not for being a woman... they might be disliked for being despicable characters, e.g. Cersei Lanister from GoT). In fact pretty much all the examples I can think of are loved by the fans! And there's probably a ton more examples I'm forgetting. Saying people (especially men) won't watch something because they are sexist is not just wrong it's also just lazy. Also I bet the majority of the audience/fandom for each of those is male since it's either action/nerdy or both PS: I just realized when writing this list that most of the list belongs to my absolute favorite media. I'm actually rooting for interesting female characters (but not at the cost of dumbing down men). Of my all time favorites there are only very few that are not in that list (Cowboy Bebop, Robocop, Back to the Future, original Star Wars (which has Leia who is great but not much else) and a bunch of 80s action stuff like Predator, Die Hard etc)
