Consider making a long above-the-tank sump filled with floating water lettuce or water wisteria plants where the goldfish can not eat the roots and you do not have to clean the tank so often! I also have the whole bottom filled with Anubias nana petite plants on small lava stones. I never have to clean the glass.

What I learned about keeping goldfish (or cichlid if you may) on a tank (or even in a pond) is that to have a plants in the separate section of the water column away from the fish, like using a box filter. So I put a bunch of them fast growing things like Pothos and Hornworts, and they grow well from taking care of the goldfish waste, and they won't pick on them anyway since it's separated, letting your scape setup as it is.

Hey MD ! Your goldfish tank needs to have a sump tank attached to it whereby you could place all the floating plants as well as whatever plants you need in it . Your filtration would be placed in the sump and with the sump , more water volume is added too , with all the equipment in the sump your tank looks more zen like !

I've been building Walstad method tanks for over a year, and the only thing I think MD is missing is a thicker cap of sand. It should be double the depth of your nutrient rich layers below. So if you have 2 inches of soil, you need 4 inches of sand. MD has 2 inches of soil to 1 inch of sand. My only gripe with doing this personally is how much faster the nutritional layer below will come up and muddy your water.

Looking great as usual MD! Absolutely try the wiggle-butts in a planted tank - I've gotten away with Vals, Crypts etc before now, the important thing is to let everything put down strong roots first. Pearl weed may be too delicate & tasty but it might also outgrow their urge to graze - Always worth a try! My instinct is also that you will need more and better filtration for these guys before long. Good luck and take care!

Thanks for your views of goldfish keeping in a plant-free environment. I had a lot of troubles in the past with keeping my tank clean and had to do water changes almost semi-monthly with a large filter (also semi-monthly changes) in an 160 L aquarium with my goldfishes. After about 4 years and month after our move some died suddenly of a sickness (we presumed stress from moving the setup to a house that did not have adequate heating during the winter, and the fact that the water we used changed, although my tests at the time showed nothing out of the ordinary). I researched a lot about quarantining and using the right meds on fish, but I always overlooked vegetation for keeping a low-tech fish-tank. Your channel is opening my eyes! I love your views and enthusiasm with your hobby/now-job. sincerely, a Belgian viewer

MD, you really need to upgrade the ranchu tank, they aren’t like other fish, they produce growth inhibiting hormones in the water, so you need to get them in at least a 40g when they’re small like that, and a 55 or 60g once fully grown. A 15g is way too small for those goldfish

I have several aquariums (6 incl. paludarium), but lately I've been setting all with low maintenance in mind. Smaller tanks require water change once in 3-4 weeks, big tank can stand 3 months if I'm cleaning my filters more often, but I need to trim plants weekly in there. Always have to push myself to do it, but then it all comes easily and the end result is the best part.

Look back 2 years at your Ikebana style tank. I use this for my quarantine tank, not only do the fish benefit by having plants to hide in or explore, but being able to remove the pl ants does help in cleaning (and they can be stored in another tank if the plants need to recover from the goldfish).

My goldfish setup is 75 gallon with an Oase biomaster 350 thermo. Goldfish need a lot of filtration but I slow the flow with a sponge on the outflow of half of the outflow tube, seems to work wonders moving waste to the inlet but not too strong for the fish. My outlet is also installed vertically and my bubbler is next to my outflow so it blows my bubbles… that way I can get a sense of when my filters are clogging my bubbles don’t move so much.

Quite honestly the current filter seems a tad small for the sheer bulk of waste these fish produce, I'd upgrade to a canister filter to cut down on maintenance, as hangback filters tend to fall rather short when it comes to goldfish or other "waste-heavy" fish. Also the gravel and rocks make it easier in general for pockets of filth/debris to gather up, which make it more difficult for you to vaccum (that's why I would keep my goldfish in a bare tank if I were to have more fish nowadays). As for the floating plants (or any plants in general), I think they'll only cause extra debris because the goldfish will just tear them appart ahaha. If you really want some green, an option would be Anubias, but you'd have to make the lights a bit dimmer as they dont take direct light very well. My JBL Cristalprofi e1501 and later on my Fluval FX4 were been great at keeping a good bacteria medium without too much debris or algae buildup fogging up the water, and the only weekly maintenance you'd expect with just these 3 fish would be the weekly water changes and some occasional substrate vaccuming. I'd argue that a filter of the size of the two I mentioned would last a month or even more without a rinse, and even then there probably wouldn't be much muck in it to be honest. The JBL was far easier to pop open and clean, whereas the Fluval is an absolute powerhouse (I still use it for my turtles, which produce A LOT of crap). Think about it (you probably even have other canister filters lying aroung), its a good investment. ;)

I have two comet goldfish (i.e., one Sarasa and one Shubunkin) in a tank that I scaped using one of your videos as a guide. It is the one for beginners using Java fern, anubias, and purple buce. I believe you called it a grow-out tank for the plants. But I thought it was beautiful! My goldfish don’t bother the plants at all. However, I do feed them duckweed and salvina from my other tanks as a treat. I feel like it is a win-win. Nothing is wasted. The comet goldfish will go in my garden pond come Spring. There, I have comet goldfish and two Koi. I want to then purchase fancy tail goldfish for the cold water aquarium. MD, I just love your work and appreciate everything that I’ve learned from your channel. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas!🎄🎁🐠🌱🐟

The only advice I could give you for having floating plants is to maybe get some kind of plastic attachment for the tank that will hook to the side and has almost like a strainer design so water can move freely in and out but the gold fish won't be able to eat them.

I'm with you on low maintenance planted tanks (I have 2), I watch videos of guys with cichlids and how many water changes and how much of a water change they do, and it definitely is not for me, but kudos to them.

i have tons of pothos inside of goldfihs tanks thriving. keep the pothos inside of screen mesh . by using screens, you can get creative and even put as many pothos you can and just get them loaded inside the mesh all the way up until the goldfish cant get them. thats a simple hack :)

I used to keep goldfish and they are most definitely poop machines. I think plants will definitely help. They’re so sweet, but a lot more work. And for some reason, in this video, I really noticed how gorgeous your eyes are. Not meant creepily, just a compliment because it’s the truth!

I would put water weed (Elodea) in the aquarium, it is a fast growing plant so it absorbs a lot of nitrate and the goldfish can eat it. I did that myself when I had young goldfish. I then put it against the back wall and every time they got way too long I cut them shorter and put the cutting in front of them so that there eventually was a carpet of those plants. I have never had hazy water with the goldfish myself so maybe this will help.

Little chubby fantail goldfish are adorable but they are such massive poop machines. I'd definitely like to see how yours get on with plants. I've heard that goldfish are pretty destructive to plants. Maybe not Oscar levels of destruction but still pretty bad. When I was a kid we had a 55 gallon tank and had a pair of fantail goldies like yours and they lived a long happy life and were the centerpiece of that setup.

Go for the plants! I actually have pretty good success with plants and my goldfish. All about picking fast growing plants, and keeping the goldfish well fed so they keep snacking on plants to a minimum.

im currently planning out a 40 gallong fancy tank with a similar scape. but instead of plants in the tank its going to have an aquaponic bed as a filter. hopefully still the joy of the clean goldfish scape and some of the ease of an actual planted tank

goldfish will do great in a well planted tank and more filteration what might be a better idea is a plenum/undergravel filter if you'd like to rarely touch the goldfish set up. doing great so far keep it up

@Blue Bird they absolutely will. We tried plants of all types and sizes and none are a match for our goldfish. If they weren't eating the plants they were uprooting them and fighting over which side of the tank they belonged on.

@@kittycodding4183 Aww I'm sorry, I've never had a problem, feeding my goldfish properly in a planted aquarium, goldfish do enjoy grazing alot but thats because they require alot of plant matter in they're diet. i gave them veggies to help supplement that requirement. ☺

@An Phillips I think our goldfish are half pig half catfish. We're currently trying to hand feed train them to see if it helps. Like I said, if they don't eat the plants they fight over what side of the tank they should be and destroy the plants so we also might try some moss balls they can play with. They were just over an inch when we got them 2 years ago. Now they're 10" and 7". We didn't see this coming lol.

I heard it's possible, but they need to have enough veggies I guess and maybe some hardy plants. That doesn't stop my algae eaters (SAE, Rinelocaria, Rainbow Sharkminow) from going to town on some plants (with other fish joining) from time to time, but I'm starting to have too much of some plants there. I'm considering replacing one of my smaller tanks with 300l aquarium just for a few goldfish, gravel bed and several valisneria gigantea. Not sure I'm going with that idea, but giant val is hardy plant, doesn't need much light and it grows like crazy with the right amount of nutrients. I think it's the plant MD had to trim (it could be Sagittaria). It reaches about 3 m (9 ft) and leaves everything below in a shadow.

I don't get the high tech stuff at all either, hope you won't get too into it. I love the low tech, ecosystem set up because it's so different from others who raise exotic fish that is just so out of reach for 'betta keeping peasants' like me haha.

My experience with goldfish and plants is that the goldfish will devour (almost) every aquarium plant down to the stem. I was amazed they didn’t eat the waterlilies and other floating & marginal plants in my outdoor pond. Goldfish are cute but truth be told I’m much more into a densely planted tank with a diverse species of aquatic plants.

I relate to you My girlfriend loves goldfish and I tried putting anubias water sprite pothos All got eaten so I just gave up on plants and accepted it was going to be a lot of water changes Which is so different from my other 4 tanks Little to no water changes because the plants just filter everything I love heavily planted tanks I had to upgrade from 55g to 75 because about 15g worth of water was taken up by plants and wood Isn’t that insane? To be clear my 55g only held 40g worth of water because the scape used up 15g worth of space

You can make an algae carpet at the back of the tank. Pros: Food for da fish less dissolved poop and a nice beutifull fluffy carpet. Cons: Takes time to grow ,its made of algae.

What about the water overflowing into other aquarium where you keep the plants? That's how you take care of two things at the same time: storage plants do the water filtration and get enough nutrients to grow

I kept some Shubunkin goldfish in a planted tank. I had quite a bit of Limnophilia Sesilifloria, Valisneria Spiralis, and some Amazon Swords. They munched on the Limnophilia a little but didn’t kill anything. They did make a huge mess. Compared to small tropicals the bio load is crazy.
