This scene is key to understanding more of Carmela. She loves feeling better than others, so as soon as Hunter mentions she is doing great now Carm instantly drops the conversation, because she can no longer pick on Hunter and feel superior because of Hunter's shortcomings. its so gold

also, bc Hunter studies Medicine now, which Carm always wanted for Meadow... ;-)
@robertschumann773710 ай бұрын
Wrong.... Carm likes to brag on her kids and rub it into people's faces how great they are doing. If you don't have an Italian mother then you wouldn't understand. She used to light up when telling people Meadow was going to be a pediatrician because of the salary and status that goes with being a doctor. Lawyers are a dime a dozen but a doctor is something to be proud of. Undoubtedly (if Carmella was real and similar to my mother) she would have researched the salary an above average pediatrician would make because of course she is going to be above average. Around the turn of the century pediatricians started around $100k so a bit above would be $120k or so. She never even entertained the fact that Meadow could become a highly skilled highly sought after litigator. She realized that when $170k got tossed around. It wasn't that she had to feel superior to Hunter but Meadow had to be superior to Hunter. What your kids become as adults reflects directly onto you as a parent. Seems to only be a thing with Italians and the Asian community.

I wasn't impressed with this scene, it was way too obvious - usually they can be at least believably subtle. But Carm just drops the conversation almost rudely when she realizes things are going well lol? It's kind of weird, she's not going to feel competitive with this young woman in school, either for herself or for meadow. And Hunter isn't a looker, I just can't see her bringing out that rudeness in carm so crazily. IDK. It's weird

Pretty sick how Carmella's face lit up when she said "oh yeah it was right around when you quit college". Edie Falco really nailed both the big and little nuances of her scumbag character!! She and most everyone else in this show for that matter!
@maaz322 Жыл бұрын
I don't think it was being a scumbag. We all know someone who was always an irresponsible joke in life that we weren't afraid to joke about, and they don't really take it seriously since they are lighthearted themselves. Carmella likely knew her since she was a child, and she probably constantly did dumb things at their house, like pissing in the pool or getting in trouble with the neighbors. To find out she is now in a higher station than smarty pants, goodie-two-shoes meadow is hard to hear. If the biggest joke of a person you knew earned a really prestigious title through reform and hardwork, surpassing your daughter who always showed precocious intellect and some maturity, it's hard to feel good about yourself. Especially since she partied, got a DUI, and kicked out of college. But people just like to criticize and make sweeping generalizations about the fictional character rather than reflect on themselves and recognize this behavior inwardly.

Haha yeah you know if they were at the bing patsy would be bringing Ton a drink. Patsy was always taking care of tony with the bialys and the papers and the envelopes. Patsy was a stand up guy come to think of it, his fashion is decent, he pulls off the thin glasses, he pulls off a intimidating look when need be, he’s cold af, and he also looked past the grief with spoons getting clipped. In the end, patsy was still on point with his gun ready during the war with New York, Sil was slipping with his piece in his bag. Patsy did what he could but he had to save his own life to somehow see this right. In the end, Paulie became head honcho with patsy as his consigliere. Patsys kid marries meadow and who knows, maybe in the sopranos prequel, at the end of that series maybe they show Paulie and patsy old af sitting at satriales. First: Seeing her daughters troublesome friend got her shit together by being in medschool and actually being every parents dream child. Second: The chance of her daughter still being successful and independent. And last the most important: Meadow being with someone who is actually her soulmate, being more equal and encouraging never make feel less about herself. These things that Carmela knew she could have had or like that got thrown away for lots of blood money, gifts, big house, crappy marrige that has now become a form of partnership for a spec house. Now its to late for her being the fact that this is the last episode.

Even at the end when Carmella heard what Meadow's potential starting salary was going to be, she could not be happy for her daughter. She mostly just felt it was made clear how much of a waste of space she is, and that she does not measure up to the people she thought were her equals or less. Same with the friend who told her she is a second year in med-school.

This is low key one of the creepiest scenes of the whole series IMO. So nonchalant, so subtle. But soooo much to it. Even when the characters don't say anything there is so much underlying content in their expressions and demeanors. This scene gives me the chills every time. Especially seeing Patsy so calm and content.

There are so many minute details within this last episode. I’m getting chills as I type this comment thinking about the many many layers to this show. Creepy is the perfect word for it. There’s an atmosphere to several scenes of the Sopranos..this scene..another being the scene when Feech is staring daggers into Tony as the other wise guys yuk it up. It’s wrath. It’s evil. And in this scene we feel it bubbling underneath as the characters maintain normalcy. It’s a wonder to me how effective the production just nails this very real quirk of humanity. We are spiteful vengeful beings.

Carlo flipped and was going to testify against Tony because his son, Jason, got arrested for selling ecstasy. Patsy's son, another Jason, got arrested along with him. Patsy wouldn't kill Tony in front of his Patsy's own daughter-in-law. It would ruin Patsy's life and his family. He had a good thing going. He was respected but not high profile enough to be a target. He was on the fast track to an upper management position given the recent deaths. If he was going to do something like that it would have been years earlier. He considered it but decided not to. Besides, a made guy wouldn't whack another made guy, much less a boss, while he's sitting with his family. That's against one of the few real rules, that families don't get touched.
@MAXIMPACTTV6 жыл бұрын
Paelorian philly got his head shot and ran over in front of his grandchildren. The family rule went out the window there. Paulie and patsy are seen talking about Tony's murder in the strip club. Patsy is obviously Tony's killer just by the way he is introduced in the season finale when tony is saying he has no enemies left to worrie about. In this scene patsy's wife is checking the plates out invisioning her life as bosses wife. Meadow was late to dinner because her and Jason where sorting out birth control. She was not meant to see it go down, the killer was already there b4 she got in the door

Because Carmela likes to feel superior to other women however when someone who she considers inferior to her, surpasses her she gets jealous. We see this with Meadow's friend who kicked her drug habit and is now in Medical School, with Artie's wife who both runs the restaurant and has slept with Tony prior to Carmela meeting him, with Big Pussy's widow Angie, who was poor after he died but bounced back up as a business woman, and finally with her own daughter Meadow who's studying to become a lawyer. Though she loves her privileged life, Carmela hates that she's not self sufficient like those who have surpassed her. She tried getting rich through the bird feeder money via stocks, but failed. She tried getting rich through her spec house bur failed. Ironically in her attempts to surpass her successful friends and loose her dependency on her husband , her failed attempts were all on Tony's dime. To summaries all this, she's a bitter cunt.
