Hello Paul. I'm very happy to know many viewers welcome this new playlist. I do plan to return to more traditional language lessons soon, but I felt these cultural lessons would be beneficial. I enjoy making them. My children are home on school vacation, so they have been sitting and watching me do some of the filming. I decided to include them in this last one. You might hear their voices again. :) Regards!

Some use a tablecloth every day. My grandmother did. I don't like washing and ironing tablecloths, so I find placements to be a good alternative. Place mats (I've seen it written as one word or two, by the way) are indeed common. Stores sell all kinds, formal and informal. I showed you our everyday place mats. They're easy to wipe, so they work well with children.

Lovely two part series. Special kudos to the child at the end of the second part. She gave us a good lesson on table etiquette on what goes where on the table. Has learnt her lessons at the feet of the guru to the point where she is well ahead of the teacher! Superb voice etiquette with the right intonation and pauses. God bless. Deft camera angles managed by hands in love with the object!

Thank you for the kind words. The children know the rules well, but they don't always follow them! Well, they do know how to set the table, so this was not new for them. I wish my daughter would remember to sit up straight at the table, and I wish my son would remember more often to push in his chair at the end of the meal. Overall, they're doing okay. :)

That's a good question to ask. Yes, it's perfectly fine to talk. Dinner conversation is considered a healthy part of the experience for kids and adults. However, there's a lot of emphasis one being polite. In the U.S., that means not talking with one's mouth full. It also means not interrupting and not arguing at the table. For my children, the challenge is not to be too silly. They love to laugh and make jokes. I tell them, "No super silly behavior."

I'm happy to hear that, Dennis. Please look in the video description for the link to a post on WordPress. I've been creating additional classroom materials for the Language Notes lessons. Students can also review on their own with the exercises on my website. (If Internet access is limited, you could use the crossword clues simply as quiz prompts.) Kind regards!

I should add that at large gatherings, there is often a "children's table." This keeps the kids away from the adults. They're usually happier because there's less supervision, and adults are free to talk about whatever they want. :)

Hello. Usually shape goes before color, so "a long-sleeved white shirt" is correct. However, in everyday conversation, many listeners wouldn't view "a white long-sleeved shirt" as unacceptable. Do a search on Google for "order of adjectives" and compare the charts on different sites. They mostly agree. In your other example, the order is correct: color + pattern > blue flowered shirt, yellow polka dot bikini, red striped tie.

Ha ha. I think many adults in the U.S. have asked the question, "Excuse me. Is that my water glass or yours?" When many glasses, plates, and utensils fill the table, it does get confusing. They kids have mastered setting the table. Staying seated without rocking the chair is another story... :)

There are different points with which you can connect this video to a classroom lesson. Foods and count/non-count nouns is a good grammar topic to connect to. I have more suggestions on my WordPress blog. Thank you for commenting.

Is eating with the left hand considered "wrong" or "impolite"? Is it like writing with the left hand? There was a time when U.S. schools taught children to write only with their right hands. Today teachers accept writing with either hand.

Yes. Eating with the left hand is considered bad in Muslims culture. I think it has to do with the prophetic saying: 'O boy, mention the name of God (Before eating), eat with your right hand, and eat from what is near you.” It's part of Muslims etiquette at the table, you know? As in the case when people say grace before eating. Generally speaking, the right hand is preferable when doing things. No wonder, Arabic is written from right to left. :)

Many Egyptian parents, Muslims I suppose, advise their children not to eat with their left hand. They keep teaching them not to do it. It has to do with religion. Some may argue that it's wrong to force children to do something against their will. I think it's more of a teaching rather than forcing. But again, if a child insists on eating with their left hand, eventually parents accept it.
