But you didn't encounter my favorite - being in my stand when a prayer group was going on the next property 75 yards away. At first I thought they would push deer my way, then I reconsidered thinking about a deer running into the middle of the group with my arrow in it. I snuck out and they didn't know I was there.

I love that line "Why am I leaving deer, to find deer?". In the last 4 years, I've harvested 3 does and an 8-point buck, all in the woods behind my house, which is situated in a 200-home subdivision. Granted, we're surrounded by even more woods, so definitely not 'urban' (similar to the homes in this video). Every year I also head into the National Forest looking for a massive buck, but usually only after I've already harvested meat for the freezer from the backyard. :) Had to ask permission from my neighbor to collect the buck last year (adjacent land), but it was no problem.

I think for most of the people who are watching this, The episode was a true reflection of what we go through as deer hunters every day. I’m just not sure if an urban landowner watched this show that they would be influenced to provide more permission to bow hunters in the area. Unless you spine shoot the deer or use poison pods, recoveries crossing multiple property lines are going to happen. Nobody’s going get thrilled to get a call at 9 o’clock at night from somebody wanting to track a wounded deer across their yard. These deer populations in the urban areas need to be managed but it’s not an easy fix.

I can’t help but wonder, if you had let down sooner and kept your bow arm fresh, might’ve put a better shot on the deer. From the distant camera shot, you could completely see a breakdown of good form. Especially from a saddle it’s imperative to maintain your T-Form and bend at the waist. Your front arm was dropped so far down, I immediately thought I bet he misses low. I’m not an expert, and I loved the video, I think it was very cool & would love to do this myself someday. Better luck on the next one!!
@pewpewkachew47352 жыл бұрын
Welcome to suburban hunting haha. Something you said that really stood out was when you mentioned how that one step over normal human areas will spook them. That is very true. One door knocking technique that works well for me is after getting permission on one property go around to every property touching that piece of land. If they are not home leave a hand written note with your contact information. Say you want to introduce yourself since you’ll be hunting x property and might need to retrieve a deer later in the season. This opens up the chance to ask permission on their land or learn what properties ahead of time will not let you access since that will chance when/where you take a shot or even where you sit on the property you have permission on.
@JhonnyBoi2 жыл бұрын
I can see that being an issue and causing problems with the neighbors. If they are “animal lovers”, they might call the cops and cause a scene, putting the land owner in the middle of it like the people at the end.

I took part in this a lot in the Midwest. Pretty accurate representation. I took out a ton of deer and was lucky enough to get a nice sized piece in a major drainage. Lots of dark side to it too. People mess with your stuff. Accurate you have to keep your stands with you. Had to hang cameras 20' up or not at all. -Do your very best to not let people ever know you are there. -Expect confrontation and be ready to hold your tongue or be a very patient advocate. -wait til dark to remove deer -use a cover for the deer - BE A GHOST -Take ONLY very high percentage shots. -ONLY fixed blades. It is another variable. -Hug the shoulder tight and for heart. You are only taking 20-25 yard perfect angle shots.. period! -you want that deer dead within 30-50 yards MAX if at all possible. It can get bad in a hurry going further. -noise and disturbance is not as bad as you think. The deer pattern people. Killed numerous while people were playing in park and mowing. Sometimes it just doesn't matter.. - early am when everyone is still asleep many times is the best. -shoot all legal deer that come in bow range. That IS your goal. Being a hypocrite if you don't. Sure, if a stud walks out hold off but not be the norm. - use flashlight sparingly. Glad you mentioned this. Another reason why you need that perfect shot. - I would set up in less than THE perfect spot cause it would give more distance for animals to travel before going over a border. Missed opportunities but I didnt shoot deer with higher chance to go where I couldn't. Develop that relationship with the landowner over and over.
@pistolpete652 жыл бұрын
As someone involved in UK forestry I can say that deer get used to the noise and movement in the area you are working very quickly if there is no real threat to them directly. I have had Muntjac deer 6ft in front of my tractor skidding logs out of a wood, a male pursuing a female and they could not have cared less that the machine was chasing them down the extraction route. That's the other point, animals like people will take the path of least resistance and use any cleared pathway. I would imagine that urban areas would be no different and would expect deer to become acclimatised to human activity within the area very quickly. They should be relatively easy pickings, the difficulty lies in the fact that they could run on to land that you do not have permission to hunt on. In the UK if shot animal crosses on to a property you do not have permission to hunt on, you have to contact that land owner and ask permission to collect the carcass or if permission is not allowed tell them that the carcass is at 'x' and let them collect it themselves. Your laws may differ.

Just out of curiosity are you actually hunting in D.C. ? I hunt around the md dc boundaries and from what ive read in the laws is there is strictly no hunting in dc

Love to see this realistic view of hunting.

I'm honestly just surprised that dc lets you have a bow in city limits. You can get charged with felonies for having so much as a single shot .22 in many cities like that. To a lot of city folk, it doesn't matter that the Constitution guarantees the right to own and carry firearms, they won't tolerate you having any. Combine that with the fact that the anti-hunting crowd tends to congregate in those cities, and it's a miracle that dc has an urban hunt.

Last I've heard and some said it already on here they don't allow it this was shot outside the DC itself and in the neighboring states that allow urban hunting

It was 5 to 10 miles outside of DC in VA. The Great Falls area.

Cool to see all the White Tails there. I hear DC is dealing with overpopulation of Brown Nosers too

Here's my two cents pieces. Number one, Hunting isn't perfect all the time. Number two: Due diligence in an area of difficult terrain (i.e. private land, short target area, etc) Bravo!

I can understand why some dont let people onto there land. My aunt owns a are of land in the states and whnever a house is being built nearby there always going across her land without permission so having someone come over and shoot stuff. But after this its making me wonder if i could ask her if i could hunt on it.
