MeatEater

Күн бұрын

In this episode, we head just south of the Canadian border to Devils Lake North Dakota for some world class ice fishing. Jay Siemens is joined by Steven Rinella, Mandy Uhrich, Chester Floyd, and Ryan Callaghan in hope of catching and cooking the big four species that call Devils Lake Home; Yellow Perch, Northern Pike, Walleye, and White Bass.

Yeah, for a youtube video its pretty great content, but their show is much more produced and polished. As someone who has edited hundreds of hours worth of videos I can tell that just putting this together was tough. Like Con John said, a lot of the footage starts to fog up once they get inside those shacks, and that's where most people were most of the time, so it makes sense that most of the footage was fogged up.

I love the show but I think I prefer these youtube episodes. They are more relatable and i'd even like to see more B roll. I would 100% watch a 45 minute to an hour video that had a lot of like "behind the scenes" stuff kinda like how the Hunting Public shoot their stuff.

I like how a couple months ago Steve releases a video about the new season of the main Meat Eater show where he spends a significant amount of time bitching about this cold ass trip to ND that they ended up not being able to make a coherent episode out of the footage because everything froze, or was fogged, or whatever. Meanwhile Jay is going “Sweet, I’m gonna make my first episode all about that awesome trip to North Dakota!”

With all the new meat eater shows i'm worried Steve is starting his exit strategy while keeping the meat eater brand and show concept alive. Poor guy probably wants to get back to hunting for himself. But Steve makes the show, i'm sorry to say. I could watch/listen to Steve talk about hunting or do Experts React videos every single day, i couldn't say that about anyone else on any of the shows apart from maybe Callen. He's knowledgeable, funny, and good in front of the camera.

I did a guided trip up there two years back and my guide laughed at the guys hole hopping. They follow contour on much of the lake like walleyes. Find it, drill and sit your ass still and watch them come through every 15 to 30 minutes. Also, fun fact, their is no natural baitfish in Devil's Lake. Freshwater shrimp is the forage.

The one comment made “there’s stuff that goes wrong when it gets really cold”.. that’s an understatement and I have hunted in extreme cold (sub arctic ) What do I consider extreme cold.. -48c. When the wind blows hard, and the temp. Is -48c..there are no words I can use that will begin to describe the conditions. It’s so cold when you fire a centerfire rifle it sounds like a pellet rifle. It’s so cold you wear full gear while riding in the truck. Exposed skin freezes in 10-20 seconds. Metal becomes fragile and shatters. There’s no moisture in the air, so snow rises from the earth. A Caribou carcass freezes into a popsicle in 15 minutes. The best cold weather gear made, just to stay alive. Everybody should do it once.

White bass are a super interesting species that alot of anglers don't even know are there nor target. I target them up here in Toronto in the early spring and late fall when they're running in mega schools chasing tiny bait. A 1/8oz-3/8oz chrome spoon gets it done casting from shore. If they don't want the spoon a white twister tail+1/8oz jighead swimmed near bottom gets it done. There's nothing like getting on a mega school of soft water "white perch" (white bass). Yellow perch are cool too..

Went to Devils Lake last year through “Hooked up”fishing guide service. It was a horrible experience. Sat in the same spot and didn’t mark any fish for 3 hrs. Then they moved us and same thing. The next day we sat in the same spot. Two day trip we caught 4 fish between 5 of us. Didn’t even get to fish full days. First day we didn’t even start fishing until about 10 am. We’re told to meet at 7 am and they were over an hr late. Fished that day until like 4 pm. Next day a little earlier start and we were done by 3 pm. They didn’t go and try to find fish for you like they say they do on their website. He was more worried about fixing his snow machine. If you are thinking about going up there fishing through a guide service do not go with hooked up. My family and i have done a lot of open water and ice fishing in our years by ourselves and we know what is right and wrong. We just didn’t have the equipment to get out on the ice bc of how deep the snow was. When we got back to the hotel we seen ppl bringing in buckets full of walleye and perch but we were told by the hooked up guide service that they just had a front move in and it really messed the fish up. I could see for myself that what they were telling me was a lie. A month later a buddy of mine went up with some friends through hooked up guide service. They didn’t catch much and after talking with him they were put in the same spots my family and I were. My buddy has a live scope and he said they barely seen any fish on it. Josh is the owner of hooked up and he is definitely on that tweaked stuff. Showed up at our hotel just twitching everywhere dry mouth super talkative to the point you couldn’t even understand what he was saying. Talking about random things just by himself. He buried his vehicle the first day and just walked off leaving my parents stranded not knowing what to do. He showed up over an hr later. His other hired guide was Adam and he was decent and tried to do the best he could with getting my parents out to start fishing. Seriously do not go through hooked up fishing guide he will basically just steal your money. Very little effort put in by him. Disregard the testimonials on their site it’s a sham and have had multiple ppl tell me that he is a tweaker

Nice to see how you perch fish! We have these in England. They aren’t particularly prized unless specimens over 3lb. Chumming with chopped worms is usually the best technique, although live baiting with a small fish often accounts for specimens. Lure fishing is becoming increasingly popular, but it’s pretty ineffective compared to live baits.
