My grandmother grew up on a farm. Born 1902. The only meat they ate during the summer was summer sausage, meat that was cured, dried and smoked in the winter. The fact that most people eat meat in the summer came about because of refrigeration. It is a relatively new habit.

Notice how they filmed this in Brazil, because if you're a reporter trying to get in with a camera in the United States, the factories would never let you in, because they don't want you to see the truth of our meat industry. That doesn't include how unregulated the factories are too. (Edit)- Y'all may have different opinions, and that's great, but we all need to respect each other's opinion! I like to see, and hear others opinions as long as y'all aren't straight up rude and one-sided. If y'all have an opposing opinion feel free to comment, but not if your going to attack someone!

The problem isn't the meat eating its mass production, a lack of awareness and appreciation for what you are eating. People don't even need this much meat how much of it goes to waste and gets thrown away. If people focused more on limiting their meat consumption and if local farmers got the respect and correct pay this wouldn't be an issue. I'm trying my best to maintain a vegan diet myself but I dont expect everyone to convert, I just wish people would stop being so ignorant and careless about their choices. Every little thing makes a difference just put in the effort. Care for our planet and yourself

BearWithMe completely agree. I don’t think everyone can be completely vegan, a lot of vegans are deficient, showing that maybe humans do need some form of meat, but we don’t need to eat as much meat as we do. I had a nutritionist professor that said meat should be the smallest portion on our plates, not the biggest or the main.

As someone who hunts and butchers my own meat those factories are amazingly efficient and clean. The problem isn’t the processing plants it’s what the animals are fed. Cows are perfectly happy in the feedlots too by the way. I’ve been around cows and pigs my whole life and the animals are very happy and comfortable for the most part. But I agree the fees given the animals and medicine is unhealthy. And the waste is a problem as well.

I live in Tulare County. The problem is flood irrigation and the amount of nut trees we have. Nut trees, along with corn, take incredible amounts of water for a good harvest. Summers average 112 degrees and we have problems with farmers watering during the heat of the day.

Vegan is also not a solution, we need to eat less meat and we need to produce our meat more responsibly. In Europe a lot of cattle is grass fed and i know that in the Netherlands 80% goes outside for at least 120 days 6 hours per day.
@canyoufearme1
@canyoufearme1 5 жыл бұрын
Brian Green humans need meat, vegan or vegetarian is not a sustainable solution either. There has to be a middle ground. We over-consume and waste massive amounts of food. This is not a simple one step solution, simply having the world go vegan does not provide the necessary changes. The problem has to be attacked on several different fronts. Also I tried a vegan diet and let me tell you if you work outside or in a labor field 70+ hours a week that diet does not sustain you I almost needed up in the hospital we need the nutrients meat contains. Sure a vegan diet works great when you sit at a desk all day unfortunately a large percentage of the workforce does not.

What is not sustainable is large, intensive, industrialized mono-cropping. The discussion needs to begin at defining sustainability and what methods should be sustained to sustain water quality and availability as well as soil fertility. Water quality and soil fertility are not one without the other. Sustainable farming in organically managed operations prove beneficial to accumulating soil organic matter (which provides nutrients, a thriving microbiome, water and air storage, protection against erosion, etc) as well as carbon sequestration and nutrient turnover (preventing nutrient leaching/runoff). LETS CONTINUE THE REAL CONVERSATION.

This past year I decided to change my lifestyle. I don't know if its just me getting old, or the fact that I'm a father, or I actually give a damn but the one change I thought would be the most difficult to adhere to, my diet, has turned in to the easiest. I'm not now, nor will I ever, call myself a vegetarian but I've decided to cut mine & my family's red meat & chicken intake to only 4 days a week. Its been an incredibly easy transition. The reason for the change-and I think they touched on it in this video- was/is sustainability. No other reason & I understand my change has very little effect on the planet today but hopefully my children will adopt this change permanently & raise their own children this way & all this may indeed help the planet, for the good.

Watch a movie called "Cowspiracy" it's amazing, beef is the #1 problem, more than all the cars and ships and planes etc. I've given up all warm-blooded animals, just fish, clams, shrimp oysters etc and I feel pretty good. Not ready to go full veggie but I think if we stuck to cold-blooded animals, it'd do the planet -and the animals - a huge favor.

japan is a culture that has thrived almost exclusively through seafood and that has caused enormous issues with overfishing which ultimately leads to destroying ecosystems as well as livelihoods. There was a video I watched recently where a fishing village in japan had no where to turn because their source of income and food was no where to be seen. It seemed like the fish had just disappeared. This had caused the local sharks to go further inland, closer to the shores, in search of food, and the fisherman quickly blamed them and started a tradition of hunting the sharks in hopes that it would bring fish back to their region. Ultimately the goal is for us as a species to correctly evaluate that capitalism left unchecked quickly devolves into selfish greed. We need to live more sustainably, we need to cut down on meat consumption, we need to crack down on the companies that cut corners and destroy and pollute to no end in an attempt to raise profits. We all have a part to play in this story but ultimately it is going to come down to how much we can control big business and how the overall population can adjust to more expensive food as a result.

I've been trying to cut meat out of my diet lately. Both for health and moral reasons. Compounded with the realizations that I can't call myself a lover of animals while eating them without being a hypocrite (I hate hypocrites) and what the methane that comes as a result of farming these animals is doing to the planet as a whole, I just figured I'd give it up.
