The Chinese military introduced a new 5.8x42mm cartridge in 1987, and then developed a new bullpup rifle to use it. The rifle was the QBZ Type 95, and it was a bullpup rifle with a rotating bolt and short-stroke gas piston operating system. Shortly thereafter, a commercial export version was released in 5.56mm NATO, designated the Type 97. While Norinco rifles are barred from importation into the United States, they have become available in Canada. The rifle we are looking at today is a Canadian import Type 97 NSR.

QBZ actually stands for 'Qiang, Bu, Zi dong'. (枪，步，自动) Qiang（枪 qiang1） means Gun， Bu （步 Bu4） means rifle （normally rifle is Bu4 Qiang1[步枪] in Chinese）, the 'Zi dong '(自动) means Automatic. Therefore, the QBZ code means Gun-Rifle-Automatic.

Some thing I know about the type-95 and 95-1: The forward ejection, gas adjustment and recoil absorber were the key improvements from 95 to 95-1, which you all have in this export version type-97 rifle. The type-95 was the first 'build from scratch' gun-ammo system in China that it took a long way until they addressed all the initial problems and make it into 95-1. I remember reading some papers (may not be true story) that a lot of time and money spent on resolving the ejection issue and they finally realized a piece of plastic would do the job. In fact, the Chinese official has never fully accepted the bullpup design, the army maybe forced to accept this from political reason, but a conventional-design assault rifle family was also taken place in parallel with the type-95 and eventually became the type-03 rifle. The type-03 is a AK-like (more precisely type-81 like) rifle family and some said it is what the army really wanted. It is also interesting to know that the type-95 now official adopted by the army force, which the length of the gun in conventional use isn't that big an issue; but the type-03 is now being adopted by the Chinese marine corps and paratroopers, which shorten rifle maybe more appropriate. Anyway, it is a never-ended argument among the Chinese official and also among the fans: whether the type-95 or the type-03 is better. It seems a bit waste of effort to develop 2 gun families in parallel but some said that it was the price to pay for learning. I'll be interested if some day you can put an export version of type-03 on video and talk about what you think of these 2, that will be great. One more thing, among all strange Chinese guns, the type-79 Sub-machine-gun may be one of the weirdest. It was designed as a 'jungle-SMG' back in 60s for the potential conflict in south Asia, a concept that I never understand. I has a very high rate of fire (1000+ rpm I guess?) for a less-than-2kg gun but very small magazine (20 rounds). It uses 7.62×25mm Tokarev cartridge but gas-operated, so in full-auto it just uncontrollable but in single shot it has unusual high accuracy for a SMG. It never formally export so it is un-heard for foreigner but it is the most common gun that can be seen by a Chinese citizen since most Chinese police forces are still using it. I'm sure it will fit the title of 'forgotten weapon' if you can find one and talk about it.

The reason that the ejection was so strong on many Chinese weapons is because the Chinese military uses steel shelled cartridge instead of brass. China don't have a lot of copper mines and they were concerned about that. So they made the extraction so strong to make it function properly even using steel shell.

Large scale use of steel cased ammunition as pioneered by the soviets is cheap and effective. The practice was and still is common amongst many militaries inside the once Soviet sphere of influence. All firearms designed to use steel cased ammunition are over gassed to ensure proper feed/ejection. Although nothing I've said will appear as news to the majority of people in this comment section, I figured it was worth pointing out some of the misleading information contained in your comment.

Interestingly, in China, when I last visited and on the occasions before, the QBZ-95 and it's derivatives were rarely ever seen in the hands of any armed police or military units usually seen guarding certain places. Instead, a large majority utilised the QBZ-03 (a conventional style rifle in the 5.8x42 DBP87 cartridge), the Type 97-1 police shotgun (a Remington pump action copy with a folding stock/often seen with a box magazine) and a Hawk semi auto mag fed shotgun (with side folding stock), whilst some were sporadically seen with the Type 05 (a bullpup submachine gun chambered in the 5.8x21mm cartridge).

Words on the internet here (as, in China) is that mass-produced Type-95 rifles are notoriously low in quality, gas leaks anywhere, very not ergonomic, etc. Rumors claim there're voices in the military pushing for adoption of the Type-03 rifle, which is basically a modernized Type-81 using 5.8mm ammo, which in turn is a highly modefied Kalashnikov design. I wouldn't be surprised if 03 rifles are adopted in small volumes by police, while the majority of the military are stuck with 95 family. As to the Type-05 smg...well before all we had were Type-79 smg which is way too ghetto for today, and are ought to be replaced for a while.

irrlicht321 pretty much the Type 05. Common in airports too, especially towards Beijing. Down south it's almost exclusively QBZ-03 and Hawk semi auto shotguns, with bank transit van guards all carrying the Hawk semi auto shotgun

Interesting how despite being mechanically completely different from the FAMAS it's built pretty much like it, receiver on the rear, barrel, sight posts on the barrel and handguards and cover more or less pinned around those. Also interesting how the gas piston is kinda of a hybrid between a tapped and really short long-rod short stroke piston. And mechanically it's a mix of AK, VZ-58, VSS/ASS on the sear with a bit more of FAMAS like the charging handle, trigger bar and final buffer.

ForgottenWeapons, here are how the QBZ-95 and Type 97 users get around the optical mount problem: 1. there are aftermarket adaptors to make it compatible with picatinny rail, though unavoidably makes the sightline high; 2. aftermarket conversion kit that convert the upper body into full-length picatinny rail; 3. newer iteration of Type-97 on Norinco catalogue has the abovesaid version available.

Those special design features and functions on Tavor and FN2000 were not available on QBZ mainly because: 1. The Chinese must keep the cost down; their army is huge in size. 2. QBZ already fielded the PLA when Tavor and FN2000 were still on drawing boards. 3. The Chief Designer was a university physics professor and he had no previous experience with firearms design.

Just like in times of need you convert civilians to soldiers and convert civilian gear to military gear, it seems quite reasonable to convert civilian research teams to military use. It's not like we need a dedicated team of rifle designers over the course of decades, one good rifle is often good enough, and I believe that was the philosophy behind making the QBZ a jack of all trades kind of rifle.

I have shot it a couple times in Chinese military. Chinese type 95-1 is better than 97. They don't have issue with magazine. It changes magazine as fast as Ar15. The safety is right beside the hand grip. You can shoot with left hand in fact if you dont lean too forward. Only problem left is high scope mount. Chinese want this rifle shoots better than Ak but more important thing is better reliability than AK.

@@zennoix9984 after military service you can still go aboard as long as the "secret secure period" ends, this makes sure you wont have idea with what's going on in the pla recently. For a regular soldier this period is typically very short 3 years tops, for expert it is long. so yes he could be a pla vet. But it's internet you know can't make sure if he is. lol

@@dding01 Yep, and you dont need to be soldier to try those guns, there are some shooting range in China, one of the them in Beijing, I tried the qbz95, and type 85(Chinese version SVD) and qsz92 pistol. It was a amazing experience, since when I was in college in U.S, I cant find a SVD in any shooting range to try. The qsz92 is the only gun that has issue, it keeps jamming, probably due to the magazing design problem.

Ian don’t fall for the myth of not being able to complete a rapid mag change on a bull pup. It’s simply down to training. I am willing to bet I can complete all drills on a bullpup in a respectable time and won’t be lagging far behind you with your AR.

The AUG is super modular. The Tavor mitigates a lot of the speed problems of bullpups. The F2000 is totally sealed and completely ambidextrous. The QBZ shares with the Famas and L85 the honor of being a rifle...

I think he is referring to the quick barrel change system on the AUG, which is something I haven't seen on a lot of firearms, let alone bullpups. I'd argue the Tavor has a lot more options for being modular (trigger packs, caliber conversions, changing from left to right, etc), but it's also a gun that's literally decades newer in design. The AUG is a relic from the 1970s that has held up amazingly well.

at $600 CAD (~460USD 1/4 of what Tavors go for), it runs super reliably with Barnaul steel case ammo ($0.4CAD per round), reliable (haven't cleaned after 2000 rounds still works every time), and you can abuse it however you want, you can't beat that as an entry level bullpup. It's like a Corolla of bullpups

Ian, good review. I forgot to mention that the YMA 95 scope from the PLA fits directly the rail on this thing. A guy from China moved a few of these scopes to Canada but the guy ended up in jail as the scope is military issued and he somehow exported them illegally. It is an illuminated 4 power scope. I have seen them but never manage to source one in.

Then it wouldn’t be a bullpup, the whole point of the design is to condense the rifle so soldiers can bring them into IFV’s while maintaining a full length barrel. The concept fell out of use now that the west has finally accepting and fantasy gun battles at extremely long ranges doesn’t really happen and that the 300 meter rule still applies

Another great video. The best ever. Detailed description and professional understanding of the mechanics of weapons. The QBZ 95-1 is a much improved version that will serve the military well. I hope that they will produce a civilian version. The trigger sear assembly can be removed quite easily too. The rifle can be detailed disassembled without tools. K.I.S.S. system. As you can see, you have access to every part of the rifle. Sight acquisition is very quick with bull pup because you hold the fore grip which is close to the muzzle, that is why professional 3-gun shooters hold their rifles with their left hand stretched straight holding the fore grip close to the muzzle. Thank you Ian for another great video.

I think that there are also Light Support Weapons with longer barrels and bipods and a 75 round drum magazine, a very short barreled carbine/sub machine gun version in 9mm calibre (?). (for weapons crews, helicopter pilots, vehicle crews, etc). Plus a suppressed version for special forces use, a sharpshooters rifle with a telescopic scope, a bipod, a smaller capacity magazine, etc which is similar to a Designated Marksman Rifle with better accuracy etc. Rifle grenades, bayonets, various attachments etc are also issued.

True. I was never a big fan of things like drum magazines or beta mags though. They always just seemed kind of bulky and heavy to me. Plus, many (but not all) of them are less reliable than most conventional stick magazines and standard capacity 30 round magazines fit in standard sized pouches. That's why I only own 30 round mags for my rifle and not 100 round or even 40 round mags. Of course, I realize that they are only supposed to have something like 10 rounds in a detachable rifle magazine up there... Edit: As a side note, even though I'm not personally a fan of high capacity magazines and don't use them, I still don't believe there should be any legal restrictions on magazine capacity.

That optic mounting rail reminds me of some of the ones added to the various export models of Chinese SKS. It's commonly called the 'rail to nowhere' because it's near impossible to find mounts to fit it. I have a nice little 'paratrooper' SKS that has one, and it has a tendency to snag on my clothes if I sling the thing, so I took a cheap brass 8mm Mauser stripperclip and modified it to cover that thing to make it snag less.

I'm Canadian and have one of these I picked up for $500 burger bucks 2nd hand. There is a rail you can get that clips into the optic mount and converts it to accept standard mounts. However, the optic ends up pretty tall on top of the hand guard. The other thing about this rifle is it can be a bit picky about which AR mags it likes. It definitely DOES NOT like P-Mags

Had Friends in the Chinese military telling me that no one liked this gun, no one liked bullpup everyone preferred the good old type-81 which is basically an AK. For this reason Chinese military also adopted Type-03 rifle, a modernized AK. Both OK guns, nothing phenomenal, but good choices when you want to arm a 2.3 million-men army.

side note, you can get the type 81 in Canada Unrestricted with the longer barrel... along with the Valmet Hunter, the Valmet Hunter Auto and the Valmet M78 rifles, they're THE ONLY AK variants that you can get unrestricted... mags just have to be pegged at 5 rounds.

I actually shot a QBZ-95 and 95-1, military full auto one, they were issued to a local SWAT unit. The 5.8 version is better, although it used AK Type magazine release, it's surprisingly light and easy to guide the mag in. The troopers I've met can do a mag change faster than me with an AR😂 it points really good, average trigger, lighter than other bullpup guns. Action is smooth and light, doesn't kick all that much. Very controllable gun in full auto. A lot of SWAT guys and soldiers compliant that the -1 removed the "foregrip" and it's uncomfortable in close quarter combat, so local companies came out with a picatinny handguard for guys that wanted a vertical grip. From what I heard, the -1 removed the foregrip so the marines can put their precious grenade launchers on there 😂

As a lefty who has shot the T97 fairly extensively in 3gun, I would not recommend attempting to do so no matter how carefully you position your head. Unlike the Tavor/etc with comparatively gentle plunger ejectors, the T97's fixed ejector kicks cases out with enough force to split lips.

The Kel Tec RDB with the overtraveling bolt seems to be the best answer to the ejection problem that I've seen so far. If they would make it with higher quality materials and a dust cover over the ejection it seems that it would probably be the best bullpup made. I'm still not sold on the bullpup, though.

Never underestimate simple and functional in firearms: if you're explaining modern weaponry to a conscript army this is a good way to go. (OK the AK74 is even simpler, but it's basically a 1940's design)

Just a wild idea on the hammer thing: It could be easily made into an open-bolt version for the light machine gun version, just put the two parts together so the trigger sear catches the bolt as well. However it seems that the actual support weapon is closed bolt as well.

funny, i've discovered this rifle thanks to his airsoft version made by real sword, still serve me great today, since they use original part in the airsoft replica dissasembly is very close, removing the lower handguard is really finicky like the real one. NB : Ian there is a 22 rail adaptator for the type 97 (airsoft version) by real sword (wich is part of the norinco group), so i guess it's adaptable, however it's pretty hard to get one now.

Honestly I think the Chinese have hit a really nice sweet spot in calibre. Considering they use it as a squad automatic calibre as well much better then the other offerings. As for the rifle I would say it's a pretty damn effective military rifle, cheap, durable and good enough.
