The B element is wrong because no shear stress can be created along x direction. So change the x direction to z direction and arrow for shear must be to the right at the top!

at 8:41 how did he know which direction is the bending moment is? isnt it suppose to be to right because I assume follow the direction of the moment toward the centre of the gear?

At 25:25 I'm having trouble understanding how to chose which direction to put the sigma stresses. "Stress element A" makes sense to me, the stress element is along the x-y plane and the combined stress is in the y direction so sigma_x=0. But it looks to me that "stress element B" is in the z-y plane so technically Mr. Hanson is right putting the 7.8ksi stress in the y-direction, but shouldn't it be drawn so that sigma_z=0 (not sigma_x=0)?

Does the torsion not cause the A element Tau to be reversed cause its negative, why do you only consider the shear part of the value?

Dr Hanson I got confused a little bit. Personally, when it comes to the shear stress, I'm taking a convention so clockwise negative and ccw positive because what confused me is that the torsional moment is positive for B and negative for A which isn't logical, the torsional moment rotates A and B in the same direction. So to conclude, the only difference is that I get the same stress components for both A and B (I don't know if this is supposed to happen). Please anyone who has really grasped my POV , I would appreciate if you could explain what is really happening.

The torsion does rotate A and B in the same direction however if you look at the original figure you will notice that the 125# force shears off the tube in the opposite direction than the torque while the 200# shears it off in the same direction. Hence the + sign for point B (same direction) and - sign for point A (opposite direction). Hope this helps!

@clarissa4662 but the torcion force wins over the 125#, so much so that the tau ends up being negative in A. As A and B are opposite signs, having the tauA negative and tauB positve will end up making the arrows on both B and A the same directions. Im also confused and i thinl he made a mistake on A so im not sure, but i think the mistake came from assuming that he shear stress on A was cause by the 125# and instead of the 200#

Hello Mr. Hanson! Thank you for your great videos! I have a question regarding the arrow direction. (Min 26.18 )On the top left you said that the middle square is our stress element and drew an arrow up on the left side and an arrow down on the right side. But on the actual stress element on the right of the board you did the left arrow pointing down and the right arrow pointing up. Can you please explain this? Thanks ! Daniel

Hey, Make sure to turn the middle square, align it with x and y and drop it normal to the point of interest, you should find the good arrow direction that way 👍

how would you find sigma x if you had compression or tension there. you only had sigma y which is confusing
