One of my neighbors had an annoying sound coming from her engine. Turned out to be a bad bearing in the gearbox. When she was looking for a garage to get it fixed, there was this one technician who advised her to "Just ignore it, and keep driving until it really breaks down". Needless to say, she won't be asking him for anything ever again. When we found somebody with his own garage, he was cleaning his tools and storing them in the proper drawer, while talking to us. Now THAT's a tech you can trust with your car! She got a complete gearbox revision, and a new clutch at a good price, and while he was waiting for the gearbox to return (he doesn't do revisions himself) he fixed a few minor other issues on the car. A broken brake light, a few hoses for some low-pressure fluid. Things like that. She wanted to pay him for the work, but he denied, since he did it without calling her first.
@TheCuriousNoob10 ай бұрын
He probably just added the parts costs to the gearbox repair but didn't charge for labor. My mechanic did that once. I did call me and ask if he could add the parts cost (was like $40) but there was no business that day and he was bored.

Angelina, @03:30 I experienced the same thing. I was on the highway going about 55 and my idler pully exploded from the bearing wearing out. Luckily I was able to roll into a parking lot with no power steering, ac, alternator, etc. Interestingly, there was no squealing leading up to it. I've learned a bunch with my '05 Ram. Mainly that the previous owners did not love her. All in all, you and Sandro are my favorites on he Real Mechanic Stuff channel. You are both super knowledgeable and hilarious. Edit: @09:45 Angelina nailed it again. That is why I don't trust anybody to work on my vehicles. I also lost my alternator pulley in a 94 Celica, at night in a remote hilly wooded area looking for a planetarium for a Pink Floyd laser show. First sign was the battery warning light, but teen me brushed it off as "worst case, I'll need a jump later and a new battery tomorrow. Gotta meet sister and cousin at the planetarium." Next sign was my lights seemed inadequate and the wipers seemed slow (oh yeah, it was pouring rain too), so I turned on the high beams and fast wiper setting. Then engine power was being affected. (injectors/plugs?) I didn't know what was happening, but I couldn't call my sister because my phone was dying and not adequately charging from the cig lighter adaptor. Lol, that was an adventure. Ofc that's the only thing that went wrong with that car (besides a drive axle which was my fault), being a 90s Toyota

@@JamesF0790well there are so many ways to make an older car better now and you're supporting smaller jobs preserving cars that have less impact on the environment than mining precious metals for batteries too. That first one with the jumper cables melting. That's from connecting the cables backward. I've seen that first-hand and am SUPER CAREFUL to not let that happen!! When I was about 7, my dad accidentally connected jumpers backward between two cars. This was back when the cables were all black - no color coding. I was standing right next to the fender of the car he was jumping and the battery exploded about 3 feet from me, giving both my father and I acid baths. I remember him grabbing me, running to our pool, and jumping in to get that acid off us. No damage to either of us, but that was scary!! A solid lesson was learned that day!! Double and triple check to make sure you're polarities are correct!! As for intervention - one needs a long piece of wood to knock one of the clamps off. Or a pair of bolt cutters to cut one of the cables. Don't grab the clamps (or obviously the cables...) barehanded - they'll be GLOWING HOT!! And don't approach the battery once the heating begins - that's when a hydrogen gas build-up and explosion is most likely. Also, in that particular clip, the odds are the clamps are already welded to the battery posts. If it was hot enough to melt the insulation, the clamps are probably one with the battery...
@nthgth8 ай бұрын
Damn, quick thinking for your dad for sure. Rushing to the pool probably saved you both some very unpleasant injury. I didn't know jumper cables were ever _not_ two different colors, that's a mishap waiting to happen. Doesn't even need to be black and red, just different so you know which one's going to the +'s and which is going to the -'s. Do you remember how much time passed between connecting the batteries and the explosion?
@DaveC_TN7 ай бұрын
@@nthgth Back in the 1970's, jumper cables were black with uninsulated clamps to boot. You really had to pay attention to what you were doing!! As for timeframe between connection and boom?? SECONDS. I heard a squeal years back on my 2016 Smart ForTwo. Think I'd only had it a year at that point. I was like "what the hell?" It sounded like it was belt related.... volume/rate of noise increased with higher RPM's. Scheduled an appointment with the dealer. On the way home that same day or the day after... the noise went away. I'm like "Ok.... could be a good sign.... still keeping that dealer appointment though". Glad I did. When the dealership looked at the car, they found that apparently a small rock chip or a piece of cement or something somehow got lodged in the pully and completely ripped the belt in half width-wise. Was driving around with literally half a serpentine belt for a day or two til i could get there. Only time anything even remotely like that has happened to me in 21 years of driving.

5:00 Reminds me of when my alternator died on my way home from work of an evening when I was younger. I got about 3/4 home then the lights cut out (Aftermarket HID kits in projector lights) so I opened the sunroof, grabbed a super bright LED torch I happened to have with me, and pointed it at the road in front of me, in order to get home. Illegal? Yes, Understandable? I think so. Had a spare alternator at home, so I swapped it, charged the batt, and was back in business for work the next day!

I had my alternator pulley come apart while more or less lost, meeting people at a planetarium at night in the rain. Remote, hilly, wooded area. I didn't know what was happening with the charging system. Lights got dimmer so I put on the high beams (all halogen so they never really went out). Wipers slowed so I put on the fast speed. Phone was dying so it was on the car charger. Then, I guess fueling and ignition were getting tired because the car was losing a lot of power! A relative of mine said they were trying to jump the car. Welp, as we drove back, there was fire underneath the hood with someone getting an extinguisher. They started a battery fire.

The fan shroud being critical to drawing air through the radiator properly makes PERFECT sense. I once had an old 2001 Dodge Dakota V6. I purchased it from the guy without the fan shroud installed. He just gave it to me as if it were a spare part along with the truck. I ran it like that for almost a year not thinking that it wasn't a big deal at all because I'm stupid. Throughout the freezing winter, it was totally fine. However, lo and behold, summer comes along, and I slowly ran into overheating issues. I eventually ended up blowing my head gasket and completely frying the motor. That pretty much took the truck out in my eyes, so I sold it for 450 bucks. Remember to always use your fan shroud, kids! Great video as always guys. 🤙

In a similar manner I had overheating issues in one of my cars because the underbody tray wasn't fitted, can only assume that the air coming through the front of the car was hitting the intercooler and radiator and passing under the car rather than through them. I'd noticed that the radiator was coming on alot during highway driving, which made zero sense to me at first. I made a replacement tray out of some rigid plastic sheeting which enclosed the underside of the car from bumper to the radiator support to force the air through the radiator and the problem went away entirely. That then gave me a new problem, the car was getting too cold on the highway now. Thermostat was stuck open, once replaced all was good... for a bit. Keeping an older car on the road often feels like a game of whack-a-mole with the issues.

Hi Angelina & Sandro, I love this stuff. If there was an official licenced DVD of these episodes where you guys comment I’d buy it as a gift to someone. Theres wittyness, safety & nitty gritty car repairs all in one. Greetings from Australia.

Angelina . In the last clip the guy started the engine supplying all the current through these cables. That's why there were so many sparks. This way, what he did had to touch both positive terminals on the selenoid. I really like your videos :)

I remember when I was a kid, we had gone by a marina in our ski boat and had to get the 2nd battery charged, while we ate at its restaurant and swam in the pool, just as we were loading up they were supposed to bring the battery down, a huge explosion happened, it rocked everything around us. and we saw a guy come running out of the mechanics shop and jump into the water, while nasty-looking smoke was pouring out the door he just ran from. They had hooked up our battery wrong to the charger, and it exploded. We got a new battery out of it; the guy who hit the water was ok, other than some minor burns. It was an experience and a lesson in making sure you know what you're doing with such things before you try and do it.

@2:28 its also good to mention that you can use a specific Starting Fluid for diesel but only a little bit in the intake and then back away, you dont want to flood the system with starting fluid as diesel engines work differently but you can use Starting Fluid on a diesel just dont overdo it

The strut clip reminds me of what one of my classmates at De Anza did… six feet away from the spring compressor that was bolted to the wall. He, however, was doing it with a floor jack and a block of wood. It was a miracle that no one got hurt when the tension came off that spring.

I am really liking these two! One correction: the visible flames of the Hindenburg burning weren't the hydrogen inside. It was mostly the skin which was painted with a flammable component. The hydrogen did burn, it's just not really visible...the giant flames were the skin and the airframe.

I like that the guy with the spring compressor (or lack thereof) (7:00) was wearing a welders mask when trying to release his spring. That shows that, at least he knew that it was dangerous, (but did it anyway) he gets points for bravery.

Angelina, I don't recall any belt manufacturer recommending the use of belt dressing for a belt squeal. Their recommendation typically involves using a spray bottle filled with water. Over the years, I've encountered only a small handful of shops that don't own a battery charger; instead, they use jumper cables to charge the battery. The reason they're called jumper cables is pretty straightforward. Regarding the young man with the struts and bright white sneakers, if I were the owner, he'd be finding his toolbox out in the middle of the parking lot.
