Fun story, I was moonlighting for a Imsa team in the 96/7 season. At one of these races Paul Newman was driving one of the Panoz cars. Right before the race was to start their car was gridded right next to ours and a conversation about cars fired up and Paul asked me what my all time favorite car was. When I had answered the Porsche 917 you want to talk about a mans eyes light up. Then one quick story after another there was a gathering of 60+ drivers & crew everyone laughing and such , the officials said to Paul we had to get started because the network was televising the event. He bluntly told the to hold their horses because he had a story to finish and took him another 20 minutes to do so. What a legend.

Yes it is! The only thing I wish that Porsche would do is something on the level of the Ford GT from 2005. A nice high powered new, more modern version. With the modern tech we have today I bet they can build a great 917K. Something that has a little more room and air conditioning.

As a car guy who has been in PCA since about 1984, owned seven different street Porsches (still have one), done various types of road racing, I always consider "Le Mans" to be the greatest racing movie of all time. To me it captures the true spirit and feel of racing. Like you say, this would be the ultimate car to own, as a Porsche fan and collector.

It’s been an incredible journey not just knowing this legendary 917, but also having the privilege to work on it and drive it on the track. Few examples boast a fully documented history, a first-class restoration, and the sheer presence of this one. I can’t wait to see what the next chapter holds for this true icon!

Jerry called a market top when he said, "Generationally, the guys who loved Steve McQueen and the 917 are still around." We are going to see a deep depreciation in value across wide swathes of the collector car market when the nostalgia effect is gone. Buying tastes of younger generations are very different than Boomers. Specifically for the car market, it's not how long a collector lives, it's how long they drive.

I watched Derek Bell drive demo laps in a Porsche Museum 917 at Silverstone many years ago, and when he was power sliding through Woodcote the looks on the Porsche mechanics' faces in the pits were a blend of fear and hysterical laughter. Derek was interviewed after and didn't stop grinning the whole time. What an experience and what a machine.
@steves8014

I watched the 917s at Watkins Glen raced in anger and it was a mezmerizing experience. The unique sound of that magnificent flat 12 at full throttle and decelerating will never be duplicated. In the rain they slithered up through the esses struggling mightily for grip. And fast! From recollection, I do not think they were easy to drive because Porsche engineers deliberately made a "mouse trap" style accelerator petal--either all off or all on, reasoning that it made the cars produce faster lap times. It also made being a spectator a cardiovascular workout--fearing for the car and drivers on occasion as the back end broke loose at speed. Can't wait to see what frenzy about this Steve McQueen car generates at sale. There is and always will be, only one. Porsche, you should buy this car.

He alluded to having it long enough and now it was someone else's turn. I believe I heard him earlier say it it was a process to use. The difference between a Ferrari GTO and a 917 is one you can have on the battery charger, disconnect it and go for a drive. The other you need a team, trailer, transporter and a track to go to.

Did you know that the wing came about after in the initial 917 suffered from lift at high speed. Can't recall at what circuit, but know that the lift issue was solved by taping plywood sheet to the rear of a 917 as an experiment, that ultimately became the "wing" you see on this variant.

The 917 endurance racer of 1970-71 was a tremendous groundbreaking success. That being said it was overshadowed by the much more successful 935 models (including Kremer variants) followed by the 959 and the 962 which may have been the best of the breed.

Why was there black tape around the headlights, did the covers come off ???
@kyle_c936
@kyle_c936 17 сағат бұрын
From the start of the race at Le Mans through until dusk, the cars' perspex headlight covers were covered with transparent polythene to protect the headlight covers from flies, oil, grime or whatever, and the polythene was attached with the black tape. At the last pit stop before nightfall, the tape was pulled off along with the polythene (if you look closely you'll see there's a 'tab' of black tape which the mechanic would pull on), leaving perfectly clear headlight covers. Same principle as windscreen or visor tear-offs. In the movie, the 917s would only have been seen with the protective covers and the tape in the early part of the race (or the movie - some of the footage was the race, some the movie!).

It finished in second place at the 1970 LeMans to another 917.

Would this be one of the cars that Vashek Polak had at his Porsche dealership in Hermosa Beach, CA in 1979? If so, I took the wheels off of it one Friday night so new tires could be fitted. They were ridiculously tight, with a single nut on the spindles. Each wheel took almost 20 minutes without a 1" impact gun. Though, I did have a socket that fit. Probably still have that socket somewhere.

The previous highest auction price for a 917K (chassis 024) was $14,080,000. That was seven years ago. The pre-auction estimate for that car was $13,000,000 to $16,000,000. This car (chassis 022) was actually ordered by McQueen and used by him in filming Le Mans, and it was also once owned by Redman. I think it could go for $20,000,000.

Be very careful when throwing around blanket statements such as this is the greatest livery ever put on a race car. That is a VERY Porsche owners way of thinking (and behaving). It really gets old hearing Porsche enthusiasts self-aggrandizing insistence that there is the Porsche way... and ONLY the Porsche way. The John Player Special that adorned the Lotus 7 series F1 cars and the Marlboro livery on Senna's MP4/4 are pretty much cemented in the Livery hall of fame and the Alitalia livery that festooned the Lancia Stratos in 1976 is so memorable as to be inseparable from the actual Stratos car. An argument can even be made for Richard Petty's #43 STP livery as well as Martini liveries on both Porsche's and Lancia's during the 70's, 80's and 90's. The Audi Quattro WRC factory livery as well as Subaru's iconic blue and gold WRC livery are also in the running. The Porsche Gulf livery is iconic and a wonderful livery, but is it the most important in motoring history? Is it "the best" ever? That depends upon what motorsports you follow and the drivers you were a fan of. Personally, I am a fan of Jean Ragnotti and the Renault R5 Turbo so his 1981 WRC Monte Carlo winning R5 Turbo in it's classic yellow and black Renault Sport livery is my "greatest ever". Hopefully Porsche fans can begin to reach out and educate themselves a bit. There are other makes and models with incredible back stories and equally unique engineering that are also worth spending time behind the wheel.

Americans will always favor Gulf livery since the 68-69 GT40 in Gulf colors also won Leman. And hundreds of the 2004-6 Ford GT are on the street today in Gulf colors to drive home the point. I fully understand that Europeans have a different perspective.
@abikepeddler
@abikepeddler Күн бұрын
@@MichaelDozier-j1b That is a good point actually, although, truth be told, Americans (of which I am one...) don't really follow European racing such as LeMans, Paris Dakar or the WRC. And it is only recently that Formula 1 has began to get a foot hold in the U.S. and that is largely thanks to teenage girls interest in the handsome boys in a Netflix reality show. So I wonder if Americans like the Gulf Livery because of its historic ties to the Ford GT40 or if it is just because we like "the pretty colors". Either way, the Gulf livery is a great one. I am in the middle of doing a Marlboro Livery on my Lancia Stratos after hand wringing for more then a year as to what livery to do. The Alitalia livery is out because it is the most expected.
@abikepeddler
@abikepeddler Күн бұрын
@@Gurn_Blanston Exactly. I almost mentioned that one because it has gained so much traction in the popularity department. It has been resurrected in recent years on LeMans competition cars as well as on art pieces and in pop-culture. But then I thought, if you mention the Pink Pig you have to mention the "Rote Sau"... the Red Pig. The Red Pig launched an entire genre of cars under the Mercedes-Benz banner... AMG. Without the Red Pig 300SEL, there is no AMG. And even though it's "livery" was more of a bunch of stickers stuck to a red car, it is instantly identifiable. So I guess, pick your pig. Pink or Red.

Not knocking the 917, truly one of the greatest race cars of all time, but Sam jumps from Ferrari to Porsche, completely skipping over Ford as if it was Porsche who dethroned Ferrari. He also states that the 917 was somehow the unadulterated high point of endurance racers which to me seems naive given Ford’s development of the GT Mk IV (GT40 Mk II as well) was at a minimum equally as focused on creating the greatest endurance racer, and was done so without the hindrance of the engine size limits introduced by the FIA to make the 7 liter Fords obsolete. Perhaps it’s the Fords that are truly the “unadulterated” design.
