Man rewatching this 11 years later because I'm replaying BFG edition on my Series S, there really is something here above military shooters still. With new hardware the load times are under 2 seconds (I actually don't like not getting to read the loading screens past the first line) and the biggest gripe I have about the adaptation now is just that it doesn't remove the HUD ammo counter when you hold up a gun that has its own like it did originally. Also that it has sprint be a stick toggle when on Mars, where you have limited stamina, but in Hell, where you find logs about workers not tiring and you have infinite stamina, it goes to a stick HOLD! And icing on the cake there, the stamina bar never undergoes a state change, so it doesn't show up in Hell so you don't get to see the stamina bar in flames to emphasize that either.

Landmark Zero Punctuation episode. Yahzee doesn't always add personal opinons into his videos, but when he lets his honest to goodness bias come out at the expense of comedy, it shows such a high degree of insight that it's disturbing. The way he described how kids have no idea what a shooter game is was nowadays was honestly quite genuine and refreshing. It's honesty in it's purest form. If you only take one thing from this video, Spunkgargleweewee is perhaps the best. I played CoD Classic. It was one of the first spunkgargleweewee games. 2 weapons, regenerating health, rigidly determined structure and all the weapons were slight variations on the theme of bullets and all the enemies were brown-gray soldiers with hitscan weapons. The game is lovingly rendered in all the colors of the dirt spectrum. Painkiller has about 50 colorful enemies, a gun that pins baddies to walls with entire trees, and a gun that shoots shurikens and lightning. Does CoD have that? No.

You got it all wrong.. SGW is a game with regen, aimdownsights, sprint, weaponlimit, forced covershooting.. Soldier of Fortune 1 or 2 has none of that. Black is also 2005. Both games before the time of SGW. CoD4 (2007) started SGW, so SOF and Black can't be SGW because they were released before 2007 and their stories are not dumb "murica best hoorah" and have good gameplay.

And in the competitive aspect of a shooter, it's required that you can close the distance and get close to an enemy with your shotgun as well as aim that scope attached to your long ranged rifle at someone's brain cage to get any effective use out of either of them. If not well you better find something that suits you. It's not grabbing a one hit kill wonder weapon, pointing said weapon at someone's shins, pulling the trigger, and then having the game congratulate you on being able to actually hit someone or shooting something with your spreadshot weapon from 200 meters away and not only have them die in one shot, but also maintain a tight grouping.

I actually enjoyed Warfighter's MP. The SP is exactly like he says it, but the MP portion of it emphasizes real gunplay (something you really don't see often anymore), a nice pairing system, and most of the gimmicks like ranking and killstreaks feel so minimal that they don't get in the way of enjoying the great gunplay and decent classes that make the game simple, fun, and it actually takes some decent skill. Also, server lists, something that should be in every shooter by default.

Although not every game has to be game play focused, sometimes an interactive movie like Heavy Rain is excellent because it offers more immersion and connection to the story than a movie does. The gameplay in MW2 is well-executed, very refined and polished. Repetitive? Definitely, it's run and gun at its most basic. But they compensated by keeping us on the move, levels were short so the shooting didn't drag out endlessly and you swapped into different positions quickly to keep flavor added.

Sounds like the upcoming Doom (4) review from ZP will probably be positive based on this. However I imagine he'll take umbrage with the name and the quest markers, even though the quest markers aren't really much to go off of in the new game.

"Realistic" military shooters are fucking bullshit. The day CoD went the modern warfare route is the day shooters died out. Plus, "Warfighter" is the stupidest name I've ever heard for a shooter.

In all fairness modern warfare 1 is quite profound really especially with the nuke moment because it tried something different and spec ops the line tried to create a satire by trying to actually realistic and quite horrifying and make you actually feel bad when you killed people in the game. But it's just where it has been done to death and now become less of a shooter and a more of an active nanny program with guns where the enemies rush at you like your holding their family hostage and have all the brains of a chimpanzee who has just had brain removal surgery

I agree. Though original Delta Force series along with Operation Flashpoint were actually really good realistic FPS games. CoD was never good though. Always fucking shit.

I enjoy the military shooters stuff, but that's never going to be more fun or as ridiculously cool as stuff like Doom, Halo or even Half-Life. I just get more enjoyment when I'm the hero or just some angry fucker fighting an evil and outright fucked up force of darkness/the dark reaches of space that NEEDS to be stopped or else humanity, the universe or even my pet dog are in danger. I just don't like killing millions of unnamed Arabs, Russians, Africans or Europeans for the 12th billionth time.

An interesting opponent is what keeps a shooter interesting for the player. Would I rather hide behind cover picking away at distant enemies or play "Spanish bull fighter" with a Hunter from Halo? It's optional to yell 'ole~' as he barrels past you and finish him with a flourish of a shotgun blast to his exposed back. XD

Probably the only way I'd play the damned thing. I like how the SAS occasionally shows up in games now and again but I'd love to see game designers throw some other playable units in like JTF2, GSG9, or GIGN, instead of the Americans and ONLY the sodding Americans. No offence to U.S. troops, to torture an analogy, I like hamburgers but would occasionally like to order a pizza now and again.
