There were some things that actually gave us hints about John’s true nature. • A later episode of Ren and Stimpy was a jab at the hostile working environment that John created when working on the show. • A Spumco commercial had a rooster hitting on a female intern. • The He-Hog pilot had the title character slapping a woman and tricking her into going on a date with him. • Boo Boo and the Man featured two bears questioning Yogi and Boo-Boo’s friendship and being roommates.

If there’s one thing to learn from people like John K and Butch Hartman is that the best kinds of media usually doesn’t come from a single person. It’s either people who hold the creator back from throwing everything at the wall at once, or those who can take the ideas and push them higher. Never believe that a singular person is responsible for making a show good-because that leads to creative tunnel vision.

Steve Marmel was responsible for the best parts of Danny Phantom that caused a cult following to this day. He created the depth and angst and drama that fan works focus on now. Butch Hartman wanted to make it Fairly Oddparents-like and babified and insisted that none of the ghosts were ever actually people who passed away, which strips away a huge amount of storytelling potential. Steve was off the team by season 3, making it the season regarded as the worst one. The onset of seasonal rot was wildly premature. Steve Marmel is one of my personal heroes.

It sadly seems very common for fans to think that ONE person is responsible for a show’s success, especially with shows like Steven Universe and Gravity Falls. Working on an animated series relies on teamwork and most fans don’t realize that there are many writers and artists involved that can make the show BETTER than how the creator envisioned.

24:30 This isn't the first time I've heard someone use ADHD as a reason to "excuse" being a sexual predator or sexual abuser, but it's honestly disgusting. I have ADHD, and probably some other disorder as well, and I do suffer with sometimes disgusting intrusive thoughts that I end up hating myself for for even thinking it, but I know not to act on them. Even before he turned out to be a pedophile and a sex offender, other bad things about John that made me want to never learn about animation from *him* are the way he looked down on other animation studios with more limited animation styles than his own when he worked for Hanna-Barbera and Filmation, and had the nerve to call the networks that broadcast them and censored his adult comedy "dykes."

Of course, Lauren and Rebecca are two members of the #Me Too and Time's Up organizations and Rebecca is a known bisexual, so their views on John's vulgarities are justifiable. Like I said in my other posts, I like his work, but I think he flunks out as a human being. On the other hand, he has picked fights with Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and has had an unpleasant accusation of them over the character of "Mr. Hankey", whom John claims they stole an idea he had for "Ren & Stimpy" about a talking feces, but didn't get to use because of censorship. John can be a prickly, unpleasant person to be around if you rub him the wrong way. His legendary battles with Bob Camp and Billy West are testaments to that kind of mean spiritedness.

The thing about “perfectionism” is it’s not that you’re literally trying to make something perfect but rather your mind is constantly moving goal posts because, for whatever reason, you don’t want to finish this project. When people brag about being one, I’m never impressed. I feel it’s a red flag that someone doesn’t know what they really want but will still act aggressively to get to this fantasy finish line. After reading about John K and how much of a prick he could be, I just can’t re read his blog or interviews any more. He’s always making himself a victim or bragging about the shitty choices that he wanted to put into his cartoons and it makes me wonder why I looked to this guy in the first place. One thing to note about the Yogi cartoons John did, Joseph Barbera, co-creator of Hannah Barbera and various cartoons including Yogi Bear, hated them so much that rumor has it he tried to put a mob hit out on John K. There's been some rumors about Joe having mob connections, due to the New York area he was born in and the time he was born having high amounts of organized crime. May just be hear say, but I can believe it. Also watching this, John K really is the anti-Ralph Bakshi. Bakshi may have his wacky stories, but they're more funny stories and he's made several fantastic films. Meanwhile John's stories are horrible and disturbing, and is really only a one hit wonder. Also really wish Clampett had just told him to stop, would've been the best course of action.

Keep in mind that Bob Clampett was dead by 1988 when the "Beany and Cecil" revival debuted (he died in Detroit in 1984 at the age of 70) and Bob Clampett Jr. was the man who had to deal with John's antics. Bob Jr.'s mother, Sody (yes, that is who Sody Pop got her name from, Bob Clampett's attractive wife) also had to deal with John's demanding , controlling behavior. It was with ABC TV executives and standards and practices censors however, that John pushed over the edge with his vulgarities enough to pull the plug on "Beany & Cecil" after a couple of months.

@@takarifan I had no idea that Joe Barbera could be involved with mobsters and Mafia dons like Sam Giancana or Meyer Lansky. Frank Sinatra, perhaps, but Joe Barbera? It wasn't because he was an Italian American, was it? If so, what a stereotype. Imagine hiring a Mafia hitman to rub out John K. like they possibly did with Jimmy Hoffa. I live in Oxford , Michigan, about five miles from where Jimmy Hoffa had a summer beach house in Lake Orion in 1975 when he mysteriously vanished, so I hear about the Hoffa legend with Mob ties a lot too often. The very idea of having John possibly secretly rubbed out is frightening, even if John is a pissant. You are correct that Bob Clampett (Sr.) should have stopped John's antics , Kraikein, but by 1984, it was too late. Bob had already died while visiting a Detroit animators and comic book convention when he had a massive heart attack while autographing memorbillia for fans, and was taken to Detroit Recieving Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His son, Bob Jr. and his wife, Sody Clampett took over the rights for "Beany & Cecil", and they sold the rights to DIC animation and ABC TV for the revival. John already worked for DIC in 1983, on the "Heathcliff & The Cattilac Cats" series, and already showed his orneriness about DIC studios with disgust, labeling the "DIC" initials unofficially as "Do It Cheap". So hiring John to do the "Beany & Cecil" remake, as much as he loved Bob Clampett was obviously going to be a huge mistake, with John's shady reputation. It's one thing to be pissed off at John's ego and temper, but hiring the Mafia to rub him out....sheesh!

For me, it helps that I was never a big fan of John Kricfalusi's art in the first place, especially when he openly insults everyone else's art. He made very good art, very creative art, but it is not for me. I always liked the animation and art style of Rugrats way more, and it must have gained a wider appeal and audience than Ren and Stimpy to give Rugrats far more longevity, a record for Nick's longest running series that would be unmatched until Season 9 of SpongeBob SquarePants and Sponge Out of Water finally defeated/outranked Rugrats as the new Nickelodeon champion. What's interesting is that Ren & Stimpy the 1991 show was great (mainly) in **spite** of John Kricfalusi. The proof of this is the 2003 Adult Party Cartoon which is like the raw, "isolate" version of John K, where we get a glimpse into his disturbed mind. The APC show is truly almost unwatchable, because it is downright bitter and "edgy", pointlessly disgusting (and worst of all, boring) and without any of the heart that the original show had. There were many jokes that John wanted to put into the original R&S that were censored because they were too offensive, but once the APC show came around it made me realize the censors were doing a job of making the original show watchable and funny. So I have to thank the censors for that... Imagine thanking the censors of cartoons for something! Now I did it.

Exactly! The original show was good and funny BECAUSE of executive meddling. I think the only reason why the later episodes were considered not as good was because there were different people doing it, the folks who were there in the beginning were probably getting sick of it OR they were running out of ideas. Either way, John K. is not necessary to have around to make "REN & STIMPY" and Bob Camp is as much "The Creator!" of the show as John K. was.

The episodes of R&S that John _did_ leave his name on were frequently atrocious on a technical level. I don't know if the regular overly-pregnant pauses were meant to pad out the runtime or were just the result of his complete lack of timing sense, but there were also terrible out-of-focus or mis-framed shots (I think the first-season episode "Untamed World" has the worst example) that even Filmation would have refused to let air. If he was a perfectionist, it was only when it came to belittling others' efforts. Back in the day, there was a high-end (and pretentious) fanzine called _Cinefantastique,_ an entire issue of which was devoted to John getting booted out of Nick. Oh boy, did _they_ ever buy into John's version of events, whether it made sense or not: John was just a simple comedic artist yearning to be free, and everyone at Nick was a _damn fascist_ for not letting him show his characters having graphic sex or eating poop. It was stupid then, and became hilariously stupid once the truth got around. Never put people on pedestals, folks. (I just took a peek at eBay and copies of the issue go for very reasonable prices, if anyone's interested.)

John K., Butch Hartman, Chris Savino, John Lasseteer, Dan Schnieder, Bill Cosby, Rolf Harris, Jimmy Saville, Gary Glitter. Are we seeing a pattern here? I was a big John K, fan, but continuous stories like this continue to break my heart, especially since I once wrote to him, and he answered back saying Bob Camp was a liar, a traitor, and a thief, and I fell for it like a sap! He also stated he hated Steven Spielberg , also has a hatred for Star Wars, and thinks "Animaniacs" is a god-awful cartoon for "morons" (his favorite go-to insult word.) Of course he didn't do that awful "Animaniacs" review in Chris Gore's "Wild Cartoon Kingdom" magazine in 1993 under his real name, rather he used a alias name after a founding father of the U.S. who was also cocky and rebellious (Thomas Paine, or as John called himself, "Tom Paine.") Of all of those sex maniacs, I still think Jimmy Saville was the worst since the whole world didn't find out about it until his death (he even fooled his pal, King Charles The 3rd of The Royal Palace.) Still even if Jimmy and Bill Cosby raped or harrassed far more women than John (John only was accused of harassing two, while Bill was accused of harassing around 60 and Jimmy around 150) , that's still quite an effort to be blamed to be as a (go ahead and say it) groomer. As for John's personal psychology, he got that from his dad, Michael Kricfalusi Sr. , who died in 2020, and was known to be the inspiration for George Liquor and Anthony's dad from "A Visit From Anthony." In other words, he was a macho, self-made, no-nonsense "man's man" from the stereotypical 1950's nuclear family in Canada who abused John when he was a boy, saying he wouldn't amount to anything by being a cartoonist or an animator. The story of Mike Sr. removing the labels from cans from the grocery store and serving them to young John as "surprise meals" was allegedly true. "Cans Without Labels" could very well be considered the "Chinese Democracy" of animated cartoons for the length of time it took to be released, although Axl Rose arguably wasted more time and years on "Chinese Democracy." As much as Robin Byrd can be considered a victim of sexual crime, please don't put her on a pedestal. She is reportedly not a very nice woman to animation fans and has sent out nasty Twitter notes to fans stating that cartoons and animation are bad influences and should be cancelled, especially all "Adult Swim" cartoons, which John K. arguably started a revolution on. She signs such Twitter messages under the name of "Your Mom", and I find that very condesending as an animation fan. True, what happened in her life with John K. should had never had happened, but she doesn't have to take it out on animation fans. Like it or not, John may be a crumb, but the influence of adult animation from "South Park" to "Rick And Morty" wouldn't be the same without his influence. "Ren & Stimpy" launched dozens of other animators careers as a result. One can argue that Bill Cosby served time for his sexual sins and John K. got off free may be because of the color of Bill's skin, but that's another story to debate about. The judicial system in the U.S. can be pretty messed up. For all of John's failures, "Ren & Stimpy" will go down in history as an influential cartoon that changed animation for better or for worse. I find it strange that Weird Al Yankovic and Bjork, two performers that John K. has worked with on musical videos hasn't said anything much about John's details. Have they disowned him today? As for Ralph Bakshi, he can be as pretty profane as John ("Fritz The Cat" has just celebrated 50 years as a notorious film), but it seems that you are right, he played the game correctly. I like John's art today, but not the man himself. How do you separate the man from the myth?

0:27 John K., sadly, will never be behind bars or even face civil settlements, because the statutes of limitation for child r@pe in California have expired for Byrd's and Rice's cases. 3:45 I could see that John K. meant intellectual in terms of using animation techniques that are complex for 1980s, i.e. imitating his fav Bob Clampett, who applied the sketchy/off-model illustrative "George Lichty style" to fast movements. 5:25 Ralph was suggested to use familiar IPs, he said, according to John's retrospective memory, he has a classic character, he was asked which one, and he was thinking and blurted Might Mouse because Ralph started at Terrytoons. CBS eventually found out that CBS bought the rights to Terrytoons IPs decades ago, so no harm no foul. 6:23 According to Thad Komorowski's book "Sick Little Monkeys: the Unauthorized Ren & Stimpy Story", John K. was pressuring his staff to meet his demands, more unique layout (pre-animation) expressions, within the deadlines because Ralph could fire him, so John had to deal with Ralph's scheduling but is thankful that Ralph was the one who shielded the staff from executive bs. John left after the first season for creative differences though. 6:37 If you think this is crazy, according to writer (and future Simpsons director) Jim Reardon interviewed the Mighty Mouse DVD special documentary "Breaking The Mold: The Re-Making of Mighty Mouse", Ralph placed his false teeth on food wrapper that was later thrown away by the cleaning crew, so Ralph had director (and future showrunner of the comedic Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog) Kent Butterworth dumpster dive the studio dump. Ralph was supposed to meet with a CBS censor over upcoming episodes but Reardon had to take over for Ralph. When he the censor was leaving, Butterworth found the false teeth, Ralph placed them back in his mouth, and waved to the leaving executive, "See ya". However, come to think of it, it only interrupted the days of two guys instead of everyone. 7:28 After quintuple, there are 6= sextuple, 7 = septuple, 8 = octuple, 9 = nonuple, and 10 = decuple. 8:09 Other issues with Beanie and Cecil is that negotiations over the licensing with the Clampett family ate up the time necessary to timely complete a regular production, let alone John's style (in which imitating Clampett would need above average time or more hires, even without John's requests for revisions and no repeats of layout posing). 8:29 John calls them non-sequitur jokes, which is common practice even back in the Bob Clampett's tenure at Looney Tunes, according to John, in which having a joke to intentionally be removed would distract the censors of subtle innuendo. 9:13 John would, at least once, put in jokes to be intentionally removed, i.e. Stimpy getting run-over in "Son of Stimpy" in his DVD commentary, and reluctantly accept refusals and thinks of acceptable round-abouts, i.e. coming up with magic nose gobblins and whiz instead of boogers and pee. 11:51 Other factors for the delays was that the show was under-staffed because John was very selective of who gets hired, i.e. only hiring writer and storyboard artist (and recent showrunner of Spongebob) Vincent Waller because he met Bob Camp in high school, and Nickelodeon would battle over trying to remove the lack of continuity and cartoon logic of Ren and Stimpy never having a consistent residence and occupation, during their editing of story outlines, i.e. John would reply "Where did they get the rocket to go in space?" with "I drew it" and spend a snarky reply to notes about cartoon logic in "in a world where cats and dogs talk". 12:30 Nurse Stimpy had to be constantly re-written and was dissatisfied with the final product, but was the only case when in the first two seasons. 13:02 Well not quite anything because when John would argue over the edgy comment he would reply, "well, it's not like they're f***ing or dismembering their limbs". 13:33 I know that N@ked Beach Frenzy was inspired by a fan suggestion (as with Adult Party Cartoon [APC] except Altruists and Stimpy's Pregnant, in which the latter was pitched by Bob Camp of all people but I am not sure if John rejected it in the original run), but I would like to see your source on it being outlined or pitched to Nick for the original show 14:16 John would argue that he does not deserve the blame behind scheduling by citing Nickeoldoen's battling over cartoon logic and crude jokes and "whenever we suggest to make a schedule and budget realistically they reject it, or agree to it but, weeks down the line, change their mind"; thinks Nick is to blame for the scheduling. Hence why he thinks he was PRIMARILY fired over content, when it the content was realistically a convenient excuse to let him go when he semi-consistently got away with missing deadlines (even with deadlines of new half-hours every other week). 14:47 Actually it was closer to a 50/50 split, especially in top-level writers and artists, such as writers Vincent Waller and Richard Pursel, art director Jim Smith, layout artists, such as Eddie Fitzgerald, Elinor Blake, Mike Fontenelli while Bob Jacques's sub-contracted studio Carbunkle Cartoon, for scenes of select episodes, decided to no longer renew its contract with Nickelodeon to "not pick sides" but did APC (though Jacques later regretted it due to issues with not getting paid in time). 18:41 Production issues could be attributed to John deciding to direct every episodes instead of being one of one of many directing units and John having a break-up (oh, God, I wonder from whom). 20:29 John K. did another couch gag in 2015, so he, so John had this, opening title animation for the indie docudrama Utopia Means Nowhere, and Mylee Cyrus music video as bigger priorities during the production of Cans Without Labels. 23:01 If you think this is odd, John had Katie (an adult by this time) participate in the 2004 DVD commentary for Sven Hoek in which he joked about Sven's ball of bandaids, "so Katie, you had a ball of tampons? -Katie: "I was nine [when the episode first aired". I thought John was making joke and did not knew her age (I assumed he invited a co-worker and fan he met around 2003/4, so while I thought it was odd to have someone who did not do the episode but never guessed he was a pred, but good for Katie she is a director on the Animaniacs reboot. 23:37 The sucubus thing was actually his first victim, Robyn Bird, whom she told about it on her Twitter. 23:40 That apeparence on Howard Stern was how I discovered Howard Stern to begin with, in which I and most people assumed that the Howard staff hooted because they thought that John was joking about "and she's underaged too" since p3dos do not out themselves unless they were called by victims. 24:23 John also deflected on bipolar disorder to why he had "impulse issues". Yeah, impulsive issues do make one a p3do. 24:28 Even the Buzzfeed article never said he had an underaged girl during the original show, but the Sick Little Monkeys book referenced an underaged relationship at one point (probably unknowingly referring to Byrd in the late 90s). 25:17 The reboot has been shelved for months and has not started production. In recent interview Bob Camp wanted be involved with such a reboot, citing that Chris Savino and Clearance creator were fired yet the shows they initially led continued airing. Thad Komorowski joked that the reboot idea is possibly just a PR a way for Viacom to not have the first Google results for Ren & Stimpy be the Buzzfeed article or the APC scene of Ren sawing a log off of Stimpy in a s3xual manner. 26:01 John had done some compromises on some story and joke ideas but has not on directing layout artwork because he is borderline obsessed with Bob Clampett cartooning. Background artist Bill Wray said that John initially refused to learn to drive because he worried that his mind would drift into cartooning and risk getting distracted into an accident. 26:35 Bob Camp was a factor, but so are his other top artists and writers, whom had both good and bad episodes (I think those stayed with John deserve a share of the blame for the jokes and stories in APC) while Games was a net reduction (partially due to making stuff just to meet the deadlines and burn out). 27:06 It is his strong vision, in which even he admits he has done numerous mistakes nor comes close to his fav, but that will not stop from trying (re-does stuff to come close to approximating). 27:12 The flower sniffing thing was meant to smell the remnants of a crushed flower, which did not garner any censorship from CBS. It was not until weeks later (towards the end of the second season) when a parental group complained. CBS sided with Bakshi but removed the episode from future airings. This did not cancel the show because the first season did mediocre in the ratings, so Ralph barely convinced CBS to give him a second season (that would be it for good) and the complaints occurred a while after this episode aired, so the series was going to end regardless. 27:16 I can get into some of John's thoughts on perfectionism, a guy who got a 5 on the AP Psychology exam, by noticing that he would mention his fav at least once in almost every single interview/commentary he expressed, or as Bill Wray said, "obsessed" with cartooning. I hope you respect the effort I put into this comment, in which I gave elaborations and corrections to this video. I was somewhat of a John K. fan back in 2012 and behind the scenes acrimony in general, so I have an insight that I now regret wasting time on.

I think you were kind-of insinuating that John K. pitched "Naked Beach Frenzy" to Nickelodeon as if he wanted to tell it the same way he did in the Spike TV version. That's not the case. Granted the concept of Ren ogling girls at the beach while frustrating Stimpy is something that Nick understandably didn't feel comfortable with, but that's what Spumco pitched at the time. All the stuff that we saw in the final product is stuff that got piled on top of the original concept under the pretense of not being on a kids network.

Stephen Hillenburg and Joe Murray are some good examples of how to play the game in the industry and keep your vision in tact. • In order to keep SpongeBob as an ageless adult instead of a kid, they enrolled him in boating school. • When Nick wanted Rocko to have a young female character in the show and for it to be more moral based, Joe was reluctant, but he complied, which led to the edutainment masterpiece that is Zanzibar and the creation of Dr. Hutchinson.

Sadly, you can now include the creators of "Rick And Morty" to the list of animators gone bad. Both creators have been charged with domestic assault and other violent tendencies towards fans. Don't forget that infamous McDonald's incident back in 2017 that involved silly mini-riots from crazed fans over schuzan sauce, that McDonalds only made a very limited amount of.

Not to mention the fact that on his blog, he would always diss on animated projects that weren’t made by either him, or the directors of yesteryear. He seems to hate everything that’s new. He even infamously disses Animaniacs. You do not diss Animaniacs on my watch. However, his instructional posts on his blog (especially the Preston Blair Advanced Animation instructional posts) are actually quite useful and helpful. But obviously, that doesn’t hide his true pedophilic nature. I’ve very much learned to separate the art from the artist because Ren and Stimpy (the original) is one of my favorite cartoons of all time, and the team at Spumco, (including Bob Camp) are some of the most talented and delightfully imaginative animators I have ever seen, and John K is not one of them. You can love his art style, but as a person, he will always remain as one of, if not, the worst person to work in the animation industry.

Probably missed out on tons of other things there as well, still kind of glad that I didn't go just for this sad tale of a human being.

I despise people who claim their mental illness or disability makes them a criminal, no.. not how it works.. I have severe mental illness that prevents me working the usual 9/5 (so I do volunteering when I can) and yeah, some conditions can cause problems but that's why you seek help, if you have the ability to know what you are doing is wrong you can *not* blame your condition, since by knowing what you're doing is wrong and doing it anyway you are sane.. an evil person with mental illness is just an evil person who happens to also be ill, the illness rarely (if ever) is the reason for said evil.

Butch Hartman and Seth MacFarlane are also childhood friends and seriously they're overhated get over it.
