Carl Sagan wrote about this event in his book, Cosmos. It was hypothesized that the moon was hit by a large object. If this was true, the moon would still be reverberating like a bell. Once lasers were invented, they could find out. I was a laser optics technician and polished a set of ATR plates ( germanium Attenuated Transmission Reflection plates) that were gold coated and taken to the moon in the 1970s. Then scientists on earth aimed a laser at the plates, which acted like a mirror, many times over a long period, and timed the arrival of the return laser rays. Turns out the moon is still reverberating like a bell from that 12th-century impact.

My grandfather designed and built radio astronomy telescopes, including a large one for the Navy (at one point the largest) and a number of his hypotheses about the moon's composition were proven correct. Pretty sure he also did some astronomy using lasers but I am not certain, as he did a lot of things in his long and varied career as a government scientist and engineer.

It just seems like a very odd detail to even specify that the porridge is cold and yet also that it burned someone's mouth. If we really think about it, a "cold" porridge is probably just the same temperature as the surrounding environment (or even colder), so even if such a temperature was enough to burn an alien, the porridge itself would not be the only thing around that could burn them. Why would they even attempt to eat such a porridge if they were an alien and in an environment that was hot enough to burn them? People are often cautious about eating food at foreign countries, let alone foreign planets.

This was super interesting. At least to my intuition, the explanation of a metorite expoding in Earth's atmosphere while traveling directly towards the monks in line with the moon makes the most sense. They'd have scene light distortions from the dust and bright burning fragments spreading outwards from the explosion.

Ah, but you don't understand. Most of the atrocities you mention were either ordered by God, or were instituted by rulers who were ordained by God, which amounts to the same thing. They were good, right, proper, and to not do them would have been a sin, and it certainly would have been heresy to object to them. Making butter, OTOH, for the purpose of making it for people to eat and enjoy and be nourished by, was working on "the sabbath", forbidden by God, and worthy of being put to death. There are good reasons why I have rejected this god, and don't believe in any others either.

Yeah sorry cheif im going to have to shut you down realllll fast their, the kind of fungi you are looking ofr would be cubensis that dont grow native in colder regions of the world meaning you would have to cultivate liberty caps and liberty caps are almost impossible to cultivate due to they hate being transported and only fruit in frost and cold shock conditions, we have only managed to grow them for a short period of time deliberately, now the idea that they collected them after finding viable spots out during the winter and autumn time is alot more likely due to the fungi in question growing on sheep and cow grazed land and when they grow they end up fruiting in the millions, if they had a way to dry and preserve the fruit body then they could be preserved for incredible periods of time. TLDR: they more than likely foraged them rather than grew as its so hard without modern sterile conditions to not kill yourself or the mushrooms you are trying to grow and the fact they like the cold the ones we had access too. I wondered this myself, and being a pedant I entered the date stated in the video (18-Jun-1178) into Stellarium and indeed the moon isn't visibly from England. However Stellarium uses the Gregorian calendar and the monks would have likely used the Julian calendar, since it was before 1582. This causes an offset of 7 days, and if you enter the 'corrected' date into Stellarium (25-Jun-1178) there moon is a waxing gibbous.

From Canterbury, the moon was probably barely visible just after sunset, although a 1-day error of the chronicler should not be excluded. And regarding your calendar correction, June 18 (Greg)=June 11(Jul). On June 18 (Greg) the waning crescent moon was in last quarter and invisible in the evening.

Yep, the confusion about these things is really annoying. The Church prosecutes for matters of faith, not science, and neither Galileo nor Bruno were prosecuted for their scientific research but rather for the use they made of them or their stance on specific issues of religion. In the case of the former, it was teaching his hypothesis (which he couldn't prove to be true at the time) as absolute truth, on the same level as the Bible. The latter was condemned exclusively on matters of faith, mainly his denial of the virginity and "mother of God" status of Mary.

Did whoever calculated that the new moon would not have been visible in that part of the sky at the time in question in 1178, take into account the changes that created the Gregorian Calendar in 1582 when 10 days were removed? In 1582, October 4 was directly followed by October 15.

I just made a chart for June 18th 1178 Julian calendar, and 1 hour after sunset the Moon was also almost near to the western horizon at Canterbury, but it was in a new moon phase so your are right, the moon was invisible that day. Maybe they reported the wrong date.

I don't know about the specific event you are referring to. But the wikipedia page for Transient Lunar Phenomenon has a nice summary of recorded events dating all the way back to the one described in this video. They all appear to describe small dots of light rather than the very impressive effects recorded by these monks. There is also a brief passage noting that the formation of the Giordano Bruno crater would likely result in weeks of intense meteor showers on Earth due to ejecta. That has was not recorded anywhere in historical documents of that period.

Don’t count on Wikipedia for facts. I’m not a researcher or expert, but I’m smart and a voracious reader and the number of errors I’ve found is astonishing. The biggest danger is the fact that the site will have several facts and then toss in a completely false paragraph. Try Brittanica, most university sites even some specialist sites, lunar and planet institute etc. I’m not saying your input was wrong per se, just that the site is often incorrect

I often use Wikipedia as a starting point because it provides me references to other more detailed and possibly more reliable sources, like the ones you mentioned (university sites, scientific articles, specialist sites etc). The number of factual errors I have seen on Wikipedia is lower than what you report, but I am sure that varies over time and by topic, and of course my own expertise in the area covered by the article (i.e. I might not know enough to spot incorrect information.) You are absolutely right, we must keep that in mind when reading an article. Another thing I do find handy with Wikipedia is that it many times gives me some technical terms that I can use for further searches. This is what I meant by it being a good starting point; not for acquiring the knowledge I seek, but by giving me references to places and terms which might. My reply was not in defence of Wikipedia, just the list that I referred to, and the sources that list is quoting. I emphasized that Wikipedia is crowd sourced, so you cannot know the motivation or level of expertise of the persons writing any part of an article. Ok...So a rather large meteor came crashing through earth's atmosphere and its path from the monk's perspective happened to coincide with the upper tip of the crescent moon. And the heat it threw off as it heated and disintegrated caused the heat mirage effect you see on a hot summers day over roads, giving the appearance that the moon was roiling. Doesn't sound very mysterious.

Sun set at that time and location: 20:14 The moon is 0.03 illuminated (it's very near New Moon) so not much of a crescent, and is 3° 48' above the western horizon (being a near New Moon it's in near conjunction with the Sun). An hour later (21:14) the Moon is at a azimuth of -4° 15' (below the western horizon). [An ecclesiastical hour (37mins 37.166secs) after sunset (at 20:51:37) the moon would be at azimuth -1° 16"] Yep -- it'd believe that.

Last year I read an article about sound, and it said that in some instances, and I can't recall what they were, if an object is travelling at hypervelocity the sound it emits also has that speed. Including the King of Kerala who later converted to Islam because of what he has witnessed. The important element about the moon that you neglected was that until Galileo, everyone in the Christian and Islamic world believed that the moon was an intellegent!, ethereal, supernal body (not physical). Galileo's first and most important fight was proving with his telescope that it was a big rock, which was also considered heretical. All of astrology depends on this belief, so this information would surely be significant for a story like this one.

Just a quick mention, the calendar the 11th century monks were following could be different to what we use now, it seems when making calendars in the past, they routinely left out a few days, here and there and the Julian and Gregorian calendar differ greatly...
