The sad and terrifying fact that most historians leave out is that Joan was thrown into man's prison as opposed to women's because she wore men's clothing. You can imagine what was done to her by her fellow inmates and especially the guards as she was ordered to put on dresses. Although never actually spelled out in historical documents, it is heavily implied that she was violated repeatedly by her guards.

I really like this channel, which is why it pains me that there are inaccuracies in this video. Joan absolutely DID make military decisions--many, in fact. That's why she was such a legendary figure. You can learn all about them straight from the source: the archives of her great trial, which are public, and the many translations of it available, as well as testimonies from eye-witnesses, such as the generals La Hire and the Bastard of Orleans, who at first resisted her orders, and her page and scribe, Louis de Conte. If you don't accept her visions as true and want to keep skeptical about secular matters, fair enough; but claiming she didn't make military decisions and was "just a figurehead" is absolutely, factually wrong. She made most herself, and was most well-known for her artillery placement. Consider reading Mark Twain's Joan of Arc for a more accurate picture of the real Joan.

@CaliCarpetbagger2 жыл бұрын
@@peachrenard2320 She was not an official commander, and expected to be some sort of figurehead at first when first brought to Orleans. But as her heroic actions and advice proved well she took a more active role in aiding in campaign decisions. Armies were also organized a lot different in terms of rank and command back then than they are today. She was also wounded on several occasions since she accompanied the men into battle, often leading from the front with her standard, but never fought hand to hand herself or killed anyone according to her own words and those who gave testimony at her retrial. Her life and campaigns are considered the best documented of anyone from the Middle Ages. The best sources being of course, her Condemnation Trial Transcript, which makes a fascinating, and at times, heartfelt read since it is the only time we read her own words. It also confirms many details from her life since it is written by her enemies, who were dead set on discrediting her, but go into details of events from her actions during campaigns and battles. Other notable historical sources are her Retrial Transcripts that have the testimony of her childhood villagers, comrades in arms, and enemies, and the book “Joan of Arc, Her Story” by Regine Pernoud and “The Maid of Orleans” by Sven Stolpe. Mark Twain spent nine years studying her life and his work covers key events in her life, especially the trial, but it is a historical fiction novel with the inaccuracy she was appointed General of the Army. There was no such thing as a general back then. She was eventually ennobled I believe in late 1429 with her family and at times in commanded anywhere from a retinue to a company element but was always referred to fondly and lovingly by her troops as La Pucelle (The Maid).

@@peachrenard2320 The translation of the reformation trial and the original trial which come under oath. As the comment or above pointed out, the main inaccuracy in Twain’s book is the use of the word “general” when technically the rank didn’t exist, but she still made many authoritative decisions and military decisions-you know, like a general. The idea that she was only a figurehead is patently false.

Every man gives his life for what he believes. Every woman gives her life for what she believes. Sometimes people believe in little or nothing, and so they give their lives to little or nothing. One life is all we have, and we live it as we believe in living it…and then it’s gone. But to surrender who you are and to live without belief is more terrible than dying - even more terrible than dying young. Joan of Arc

@@speedingatheist To believe without evidence is absurd but that is not what Joan of arc did. She had a revelation that made her take action that’s not without evidence for her it happened to her. Otherwise she would have not went into a dangerous bloody conflict and have the possibility of being burned alive done to her unless she really believed in what she saw. Also I think the point of this statement that supposedly came from her is illustrating that it’s important to make use of the time we are given and stay true to who you are because sacrificing your own beliefs and who you are is worse than dying according to Joan of Arc.

She was captured by the Burgundians at the Battle of Compiegne, who were a political faction of Frenchmen loyal to the Duke of Burgundy, who was allied with the English during that time. They then sold her to the English, who had long wanted to put her to death as a heretic in order to discredit the coronation of Charles VII. One of the main charges the pro- English clerics made against her as a heretic was her claim God approved her wearing mens clothes and her refusal to change- primarily because the trousers, tied to her blouse, were her only protection from the English guards she was forced to live with that constantly threatened her with sexual assault.

The absolute depravity of churches in the entire medieval age is shocking. Monks and nuns were cool, busy making beer and tending gardens, but the hierarchies of bishops and priests caused so much death and suffering. Catholics tortured Protestants, Huguenots, Cathars, Waldensians, and many who practiced the old ways. Protestants tortured and burned Catholics the second they got any power. The events of the reformation and counter reformation are the best example of why we needed the enlightenment period and a balance of logic and spirit, and independent non religious government.

I wish that history podcasts/documentaries would take the time to actually look up the Pronunciation of the main names that they use in their videos. "Burgundian" is pronounced /bɜːˈɡʌndɪən/, with stress on the SECOND syllable. Pronouncing one of the main names of what your video is all about wrongly, that comes off as really a bit amateurish.
