We begin this meditation by making a clear distinction between the knower and the objects that are known. We see that knowing is not just in the background of experience but pervades all experience. Finally, we understand that all experience is a vibration of infinite knowing, that the world is what the inside of God's mind looks like when viewed from the perspective of the separate subject of experience, and that our finite mind is a viewpoint, not an individual entity.

My Zen calendar says today, “ However great the conceptual knowledge and understanding might be, in the face of real experience, concepts are like flakes of snow fallen on a burning fire.” (Zenkei Shibayama)

This is simply extraordinary. For those who are in the early stages of exploring the nature of reality, “Contemplating the contemplator” may be a little bit tricky in the beginning. Our mind is so accustomed to be directed outwards towards thoughts, sensations and perceptions, that the tendency of searching for the Contemplator as an Object of experience is going to be persistently there. This is like a torch trying to direct the light beam towards itself, towards the source of the beam. It is not possible. So when you sit in contemplation in the early stages, notice when the mind is trying to search for its own source (The Contemplator) as an Object. Then gently, remind yourself that you are already the contemplator and nothing needs to be done in order to be what you already are. Be only knowing. Be loving and patience, don’t get frustrated (As I used to be) and simply keep resting the mind in its source. In other words, be aware of being aware. Thoughts also may be a bit “disturbing” in the early stages of this exploration. If you find yourself caught by a thought, gently go back to the resting position. It takes time. The subject-object tendency of the mind has been there for decades, so we cannot expect this to happen over night. It needs time to be explored over and over and over… until suddenly we find ourselves “there” naturally. At that moment (In Rupert’s words) meditation becomes what we are, not what we do.

Jose, all the things that you mention are very helpful, but if you want your contemplation to become truly fruitful, the energy within yourself (grace) must be awakened. When that energy gradually rises within ourselves, it gradually destroys the compulsivity of the mind and sets it on the Right understanding. The more the mind concentrates on the energy within, the more kind, insightful and fearless it becomes. How do we awaken that energy ? Meditating on our breath, going within and holding on to the ego, self inquiry, practicing Chi Kung (standing meditation), doing the Five Tibetans, moderating your diet, and most important of all: Having a profound longing for truth. Stillness, love and letting go.

I call this being aware of the Watcher.. and sometimes meditate consciously and curiously on its inherent qualities- watching the Watcher, so to speak. Coupled with the full acceptance of the ego as valuable and loved, it becomes a turning inward of expansive Consciousness. I am reticent to believe in god(s) having grown up in a fundamentalist Christian community, but these deeper states of being often leave me wondering what lies beyond the expansive energy I sense through myself. Dissolution and debridement of the egoic body..

Thank you for your words of kindness and love Rupert. One of the lines in God Bless America is "stand beside her and guide her, through the night with a light from above". We need all the light pouring into us now than we have ever needed before. Thank you for sending your light across the miles. I visualize it as a wave coming across the Atlantic Ocean and arriving here on the eastern shore bathing us.

I've started meditating directly before going to sleep each night. For some reason I enjoy it more, I meditate longer than I aim too, and it helps me sleep afterwards. I have read if it's beneficial but I get conflicting advice? I've also read it's better to meditate before sleep but then leave 45 minutes to an hour gap before falling asleep? Is there any reason why meditating sat up in bed for 15 to 30 minutes, then lying down and going to sleep after would not be as good as meditating any other time of the day?

Right after waking up or right before sleep is actually the best for meditation since the brains naturally either coming back from or preparing for deeper brain wave patterns :)

Years ago I wrote a thesis on the mutual constitutive-ness of the physical mind and the conscious body. It refers to the dialectical exchange as the basic unit of analysis. Listening to Rupert I see many errors in my thinking throughout my thesis but am wondering if the basic premise of the dialectical was on the right track towards non-dualism. Or just wrong. Are there any non-dualist sociologists out there?
